Harriet Tubman's Influence On Modern Society Today

Over the course of time many African American’s have made quite the impression on the modern society today. One that I believe to have stuck out for me would be Harriet Tubman. At the age of five she was sent to work as a slave. After suffering from a head injury from her plantation owner, she married a free man named John Tubman and lived alongside him in a state of semi-slavery. It was with the death of her master in 1847 and his son's death in 1849 she was terrified that she might be sold back south, so she decided to run. Using the North Star as a guide she went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she found employment. It was with the simple plan of going back to get her sister that started the main reason why so many people use her as a public example of why slavery is inhuman. She went back south a total of 16 times, looking for liberty seeking slaves.

Harriet Tubman is one of the most known Underground Railroad conductor. She gave many people hope that they could be free, although in a sense she was not free. There were many wanted posters with her name on them. On her runs to the south, she would run on Sunday knowing that they could not post a run away in the papers until Monday. She not only put slavery into perspective, she gave many people something they never thought they would have, hope. For those who were in slavery, that was something they believed to have been ripped away. Although she did not put an end to slavery, she defiantly made a dent in history. Someone brave enough to not only run for themselves, but seeing as she was in the same situation she helped others. A selfless woman who saw the wrong, and did what she thought was right.
