The song itself annoyed me, so I reached over to turn off my car stereo. After the song stopped I slowly opened my eyes, fighting against the pain of the headache. As my vision slowly came back into focus I noticed that I wasn’t sitting horizontally, as you would normally sit in a vehicle. Instead I was hanging vertically still strapped into the car seat by the seatbelt. The windshield was almost completely destroyed. It was only being held together by the layer in the glass that kept it from shattering. I looked towards the passenger seat, which was down from where I was. My friend James was unconscious and bleeding profusely from the side of his head that had impacted the passenger side window. My head was still ringing, but I knew that I had to wake him up so I reached towards him and started shaking him and yelling his name. His older brother, Michael, had not been knocked unconscious by the crash and he was kicking through the back windshield to get out of the car. The car only had two doors, so the only way out was through the back windshield. I managed to wake James, but he was too dazed to respond to me. In the modern world, the media has a great impact on our lives. Among other things, television and internet keeps us updated with news from all over the world. But has Reality TV gone too far? And who are we to blame when young people’s behaviour are affected by it? “Harsh Reality TV” puts up a negative perspective of reality TV. The author L.B. Bozell states that the reason reality shows are so frequent is because the TV producers are more inclined to create cheap reality shows than expensive dramas. One of the greatest TV hits to this date is the TV-series “Friends”, which has cost Fox-TV 1 million dollars per episode for EACH of the six major characters. It is clear that Bozell feels that reality TV is more trouble than it is worth. He says that the shows are “cheap ego massage” (p. 11, l. 8) and “stupid (literally) shows” (l. 14), and he calls the participants “human camera fodder” (l. 6). The relation between democracy and size is problematic. In small communities, voters can be presumed to have some personal knowledge of both candidates and issues arising from their life experience. But democracy in such communities in India is, to put it very mildly, slight. The various Panchayat systems set up to implement the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments are deprived of either significant jurisdiction or even minimal resources, and in most cases both. The sole exception is in West Bengal, where the Panchayat system was created fifteen years before the 73rd Amendment, and developed into real -- if flawed -- organs of local self-government. In consequence panchayat elections in West Bengal alone in all of India are truly serious matters and, as we are at the time of writing painfully aware, reflect a democracy increasingly overshadowed by gangsterism and force.
