Introduction
HBCUs, formed during segregation and discrimination to educate students of color, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played an essential role in renovating the landscape of higher education in the United States. In an era of rapid transformation, HBCUs face historic challenges as well as new complications. Sustainability, cost, quality, and mission are among many of the reoccurring issues that will require attention, creative approaches and solutions from governing boards and presidents in order to move forward.
This paper analyzes HBCU enrollment, retention and graduation rates, how the hiring and firing of presidents and fundraising affects the branding of the institution. My hope is that the findings will contribute to the national dialogue about the future of HBCUs and serve as a resource for boards and institutional leaders to focus their …show more content…
While that may be true, I wanted to examine whether that may have had an impact on fundraising and alumni giving. I also wanted to compare whether or not the bad outweighed the good, so I interview both presidents at Elizabeth State University and South Carolina State University. During those interviews I posed questions about their current situations and the affect it has had on giving, enrollment, retention and graduation and the recruitment of university leadership, faculty and staff. The censes was the same, that has definitely made their job a lot harder but they’ve had to focus on university branding more than they would have, had these issues not been a factor. I watched an interview with the president of Morehouse College as he spoke to the brand at Morehouse and the problems they’ve had, and how the brand of the university has enabled them to do different things in comparison to their sister
