Hcs 335 Week Two Ethics Case Study

...Ethics Case Study March 26, 2012 HCS 335 Ethics Case Study: Jerry McCall Introduction Ethics are an important aspect of an individual’s personal and professional life, as ethics help people determine whether their actions are right or wrong, good or bad, just or unjust, and fair or unfair (Fremgen, 2009). Strong workplace and interpersonal ethics are essential to any career, but especially so in health care wherein professionals encounter people from all lifestyles, life and death situations, and further circumstances people in other professions do not face. One such situation is the case study involving Dr. William’s office assistant, Jerry McCall. While sitting in for the receptionist, Jerry receives a phone call from a long-time patient needing a last-minute refill called in for his antidepressant, Valium, before taking a flight. The patient tells Jerry Dr. Williams is a close friend. Jerry has some professional medical assistant and LPN training, but has no certification in either field, and no one else is available to fill the patient’s prescription. This study will examine if Jerry is qualified to call in the refill, bearing on the situation if the patient had critical need for the medication, and the ethical and legal stipulations and consequences concerned depending on Jerry’s possible choices. Qualifications A health care professional must have specific qualifications and certifications to order medication refills for patients (Fremgen, 2009...

Ethics Case Study Hcs/335

...Ethics Case Study XXXXXXXXXX HCS/335 May 2, 2011 Beryl Keegan, RN, BSN, MSN/HCE, CCRN, CLNC Ethics Case Study "Jerry McCall is Dr. William's office assistant. He has received professional training as both a medical assistant and a LPN. He is handling all the phone calls while the receptionist is at lunch. A patient calls and says he must have a prescription refill for Valium, an antidepressant medication, called in right away to his pharmacy, since he is leaving for the airport in thirty minutes. He says that Dr. Williams is a personal friend and always gives him a small supply of Valium when he has to fly. No one except Jerry is in the office at this time. What should he do" (Fremgen, 2009, p. 85)? Medical ethics is a subject open to much interpretation and is prone to many grey area's without definite answers. In the case of Jerry McCall, Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse and Office Assistant the rationale, ethical and legal, for not refilling a prescription without physician consent are justified. If Mr. McCall chooses to refill the unauthorized prescription and the patient has an adverse reaction, his employer, Dr. William's can be held legally responsible for the committed tort even though he is personally without fault (Regan & Regan, 2002). Ethical and legal ramifications are at stake; using effective problem-solving methods to assist with decision making can help to avert a problematic outcome. Qualifications Required for Authorizing...

Hcs 335 Week 1 Case Study

..."A fellow student says, "Sure, I stole this book from the bookstore, but the tuition is so high that I figured the school owed me at least one book." 1. Do you agree with his rationalization? Why or why not? 2. What do you say to him? 3. What ethical principles discussed in this week's readings helped you with your answer? Source: Chapter 1, Introduction to Medical Law, Ethics and Bioethics, p. 3 of text. I don't agree with the rationalization because to me this is ethically wrong to steal anything regardless of how expensive it is. As a student and consumer it is our obligation to pay for things within the market of each industry we use. A fellow student may think that the school owes him or her a book but in all reality if that student is attending the college or university then there would probably be a code of conduct that he or she must abide by. The stealing criteria would probably fit in this area. The stealing of a book is illegal and therefore unethical to do so. I would tell him although you may think that the school owes you a free book think about what you are doing and how others would feel if you were doing this kind of thing. Do you steal from other places that you go such as grocery stores or Wal-Mart? If you don't, then think about what you are doing and be respectful of other people's products. It is our obligation as student to abide by all rules and regulations and this includes paying for all supplies and materials. They are...

... medication it may be. If the medication were blood pressure medication, birth control, thyroid medication, or even medication for indigestion, Jerry could not legally call in medication for many different liabilities. Calling in or dispensing any medication without the signature of the physician or without consent could cause Jerry or anyone other healthcare professional to lose their medical license, be at risk of criminal charges and not to mention but also being terminated from his or her job. It does not matter if the patient is a long term patient of the facility and has been on the medication for a long period of time. If one were to do anything from prescribing medication to performing medical test without physician orders will put one at great risk for many legal issues. If the patient were to have an adverse reaction to the medication while flying it will have major consequences for not only Jerry but also Dr. Williams. First of all, if the prescription refill was not authorized it would develop a major issue for all parties involved, especially if the patient were to die. Jerry would have to face to state board of nursing and more than likely Dr. Williams will be faced with the possibility of a malpractice suit. In this case if the medication were called in unauthorized there is no chance that Dr. Williams could get away from a malpractice suit because it was one of his employees who went against laws and regulations set forth. However, the fact......

...Strategies for security in High-Rise Residential Buildings | November 10 2013 | | Kristen Mosuch Case Study 1 | Strategies for security in High-Rise Residential Buildings When living in a high-rise, residents have a reasonable expectation of safety and security. As a contractor charged with the construction of such a building, there are many facets of security that must be taken into consideration before design and construction can begin. As a contractor, there is a certain responsibility to account for any risks that already exist, as well as risks that may exist in the future. Security is often used as a selling point for potential buyers, so the overall success of the project can depend on how well the security portion is implemented. According to Chris Grniet, regional managing director for Guidepost’s Technology/Design Consulting team, “What’s secure and what isn’t for residential properties tends to wax and wane with the perception of general security and safety in the overall environment.” (Garris, 2013) Residents will feel more comfortable, and will be willing to spend more if they feel secure in their living environment. “When establishing the right mix of comfort and security, the trick is to incorporate security measures without making them completely obvious. It’s not about being stealth, but about providing a safe environment that feels like home. “ (Garris, 2013) Security should not interfere with the daily lives or residents, but should be...

Hcs 335 Ethical Case Study- Jerry Mccall

...Ethical Case Study- Jerry McCall HCS/335 Ethical Case Study: Jerry McCall Jerry McCall is a Medical Assistant for Dr. Williams. One afternoon Jerry was covering the front office while the receptionist was out to lunch. He received a phone call from a patient who requested a refill for Valium. The patient had stated that he and Dr. Williams are personal friends and Dr. Williams always gives him “a small supply of Valium before he leaves on a trip” (Fremgen, 2009 p. 85). Jerry was the only person in the office at the time of the phone call. Should Jerry refill the medication? No Jerry should not and I will explain why this is not ethically right. Valium also known as Diazepam is a “benzodiazepine, it affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety” (drugs.com, 2013) Benzodiazepine is drugs that, “affect gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter chemical that nerves use to communicate with one another” (rxlist.com, 2013). Valium is used to treat anxiety, seizures, insomnia, and at times light sedation for medical procedures. Jerry works for Dr. Williams as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) not a Licensed Practical Nurse so he must follow the Certified Medical Assistant Scope of Practice. In the State of California “Medical assistants are unlicensed individuals who perform non-invasive routine technical support services under the supervision of a licensed physician and surgeon or podiatrist in a medical office or clinic setting...

Magnolia Case Study Paper Week 1

...Magnolia Case Study Amber Meenach BSHS/373 Scott Kersh Magnolia Therapeutic Solutions is a non-profit organization based in New York City that helps provide psychotherapy for those suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). After the traumatic events of 9/11/01 when terrorists attacked out Twin Towers, Magnolia was granted extra funds from the state of New York to help treat victims who were suffering due to the attack. Due to the upsurge of clients Magnolia now was having to service, they increased staff and administrative services. Mary Stewart, the founder and executive director of Magnolia, counted on the grant from the state to be renewed for the following year, an when it was not granted Magnolia found themselves $500,000 short of their expected budget and ultimately caused the organizations downfall. In this paper I will be discussing how I would have decided things differently in the case of Magnolia Therapeutic Solutions. Board Decision The first mistake that I feel was made was that the board allowed Mary Stewart to count the state grant for another year, without any indication that it would be offered for a second year. Money that is not guaranteed should never be worked into the budget. This is why there was such a significant short fall in the outcome versus what was expected. As a board member, I would have proposed that we remove the grant from the budget, and only included the funds that are already in place for each fiscal year. If the...

Week 1: the Ethics Environment - Case Study

...Dedicated to all my Fellow Students 1 Ans :- An employee should immediately report and error when it is discovered. All employees, especially employees who are burdened with the task of making projections which may impact the future of the company must act with integrity. “According to Mintz, “Integrity is a fundamental trait of character that enables a CPA to withstand client and competitive pressures that might otherwise lead to the subordination of judgment.” A person of integrity will act out of moral principle and not expediency. That person will do what is right even if it means the loss of a job or client. In accounting, the public interest (i.e., investors and creditors) always must be placed ahead of the one's own self-interest or the interests of others, including a supervisor or client. (Steven M Mintz 2)” The answer does not change whether it impacts other aspects of operations. Certainly, it is more important to report errors when those errors can impact the company. The integrity of the person making the projection affects the overall reputation and trustworthiness of the individual, the department and the firm as a whole. If the belief develops that a person is making poor projections or covering up errors, even small or non-consequential errors their future projections may be ignored or discounted due to this lack of integrity. 2 Ans :- Employees may be hired or laid off due to Daniels projections. In fact those people hired to meet the expectant work...

...William Stewart Case Study Week 1 There are many nefarious computer activities that we must be aware of to keep our Company secure. Every day we are on top of the latest security trends and we do what we have to in order to protect the company. We strictly enforce the physical security, access controls, physical barriers, and use the best software money can buy to protect us. However, there are still ways we must protect ourselves from other activity in which our systems can still be accessed if we aren’t careful. Specifically, two harmful activities, ping sweeps and port scans can have a major impact on computer systems and can definitely cause worry if they aren’t prevented. Ping sweeps could have a major impact on computer systems because they are the first step of an intruder making his entry (Conklin, White, 2010). A ping sweep sends a ping or an ICMP echo request to the target or to multiple hosts (Rouse, 2005 pg. 12). It is being used to see if there is an address alive. If there is, it will return with an echo reply. This is how the intruder will decide the range of addresses and can determine which live address to attack. Ping Sweeps cause worry because you may think they are prevented; however there are other similar ways to determine live addresses. A ping sweep can be prevented by disabling ping sweeps on the network by blocking the ICMP echo request from any outside source. Conversely, Address Mask Requests and ICMP Timestamp are other ways to...

...“Heavenly Chocolates website transactions” Heavenly Chocolates manufactures and sells quality chocolate products at its plant and retail store located in New York. Two years ago the company developed a website and began selling its products over the internet. Website sales have exceeded the company’s expectations, and management is now considering strategies to increase sales even further. To learn more about the website customers, a sample of 50 Heavenly chocolates transactions was selected from the previous month’s sales. Data showing the day of the week each transaction was made, the type of browser the customer used, the time spent on the website, the number of websites pages viewed, and the amount spent by each of 50 customers are contained in the file names Shoppers. Heavenly Chocolates would like to use the sample data to determine if online shoppers who spend more time and view more pages also spend more money during their visit to the website. The company would also like to investigate the effect that the day of the week and the type of browser have on sale. Prepare a statistical report and answer the following questions: a) What are the variables in this sample data, and what are the types of these variables? b) What are the scale of measurement of these variables? c) Numerical summaries (descriptive statistics) for day, browser, time, pages viewed and amount spent. Discuss what you learn about Heavenly Chocolate’s’ online shopper from these......

Week 2 Case Study 1

...Week 2 – Cast Study 1 Robert Dickens Dr. Romy Lu 0001VA016-1138-001 – Advanced Computer Architecture 20 October 2013 Digipos is a company that provides infrastructure solutions specifically tailored to retail oriented companies. Digipos provides a wide range of hardware platforms that include displays, mobile ecommerce solutions, systems, software, and even third party integration solutions. Digipos traditionally recommend that their clients perform a hardware upgrade every five to seven years. This hardware upgrade usually required a complete hardware change which would require a system outage as the old systems are pulled out and the new systems are put in place. This is definitely quite a task to accomplish that can introduce several critical problems. Typically, a hardware replacement requires a “burn-in” period to ensure that the hardware electronics are all stable and not going to fail. Typically this is done before the product is shipped to the client but isn’t always followed and may have to be done on site which would require a risky period of time where their equipment could very possibly fail. Another point of concern is the software and processes that run on the system might have a conflict with the new hardware, but again, this should be fully tested in a lab environment at DigiPos rather than on site at the client’s location. DigiPos decided that these outages were impacting their...

...Hard Rock Café Case Study GSCM-206 Managing Supply Operations   1. Identify the strategy changes that have taken place at Hard Rock Café since its founding in 1971. Hard Rock Café is a globally recognized brand. Since its founding in 1971, Hard Rock Café has made continuous improvements and upgrades to bring the brand to where it is today, changing with the times and markets. Hard Rock started as a London Café serving classic “American” food and eventually became a “theme” restaurant chain selling memorabilia and souvenirs in tourist destinations. From there the company transformed by adding stores, upgrading menus, moving to places that were not, at the time, tourist destinations, and most effective of all, they began playing live music and hosting rock concerts, adding to the overall customer experience. Hard Rock changed dining by making it an “experience”, an event that includes a unique experience not duplicated anywhere else. To create this unique experience, Hard Rock has invested millions of dollars into creating an acoustic and visual scenario for their customers. They also introduced into their “experience” concept their own brand merchandise, souvenirs and products, which is unique to each location which in turn provides a greater income to the company. Hard Rock is known for its museum-worthy, and quite extensive amount of Rock N’ Roll memorabilia and merchandise. Today, its memorabilia collection is estimated to be worth...
