Euthanasia Debate

May 24, 2010
Professor Melissa Green, M.H.A.

Euthanasia Debate Every day in the field of medicine professionals are faced with an ethical decision or problem. The advancements in medicine and technology are raising questions and concerns never once thought of. Controversy over euthanasia is on the forefront of today’s health care platform. With the present change occurring with the American Heath Care Reform health care providers and society need to be informed of the options available in end of life care. This paper will present a debate about human euthanasia. Euthanasia will first be defined. Support for each side of the debate will be presented. Each side will be provided with questions from the opposing side, with the opposing teams response presented. Each side will then present a closing statement, again to support their side from the result of the debate.
Euthanasia defined Euthanasia is the practice of mercifully ending a person's life to free someone from a deadly disease. The word euthanasia comes from the Greek word "good death." The term euthanasia is being used synonymously with the term Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS), although they are not one and the same. PAS generally refers to a practice in which the physician provides a patient with a lethal dose of medication, upon the patient's request, which the patient intends to use to end his or her own life (University of Washington School of Medicine, 2010). Voluntary active euthanasia means a deliberate intervention, by someone other than the person whose life is at stake, directly intended to end that life. The patient must be competent and terminally ill and must make a fully voluntary and persistent request for aid in dying. The term "mercy killing" is often used in place of "euthanasia" to emphasize that such an act is directly intended as an act

Ethical Issue Facing Health Care Hcs/435-Marijuana Use

...* Ethical Issue Facing Health Care * HCS/435 * 02/01/2014 * Ethical Issue Facing Health Care * There are many ethical issues faced by health care today. One of them is legalizing recreational use of marijuana. According to Patterson (2013), in United States, there are currently 20 states and the District of Columbia approves marijuana use for medical purposes. However, on November of 2012, the states of Colorado and Washington became the first two states that pass the law for legalizing marijuana for recreational use (Patterson, 2013). Meaning, it is legal for anyone at the age of 21 and older to purchase and possess marijuana under one ounce and consume it in a private location. It is also legal for Colorado residents to grow marijuana in their private home for personal use of up to six plants with the restriction that only three out of six plants may flower simultaneously (Patterson, 2013). * This legality poses an ethical concern to public health due to the health and safety aspects of marijuana usage. Desai and Patel (2013) stated that there have been testimonies from patients claiming that marijuana relieves pain, nausea, tremors, epilepsy, and cancer but none of the research results can prove its benefits are greater than its risk (p.136). Desai and Patel (2013) further stated that Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) properly categorized Marijuana under scheduled I of the Controlled Substance Act, meaning drugs under this list have currently no proven acceptable...

Alex Ovechkin Case Study

...vanek-140512-620-thumb-620xauto-370865 Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin skates amid a drill at the group's preparation camp on Friday in Arlington, Va. In the first place year Capitals mentor Barry Trotz needs Ovechkin to turn into a more finish player and the initial phase, in the seat manager's eyes, is to recover the Russian objective scorer on the left wing. (Scratch Wass/Associated Press) Alex Ovechkin moved again to left wing by new mentor Barry Trotz As though he knew the inquiry was impending, Alex Ovechkin grinned when asked what his new mentor needs him to take a shot at. "On backcheck?" Ovechkin said from Arlington, Va. An alternate season, an alternate opportunity to discover whether one of the class' most gifted objective scorers can genuinely assist some all the more on resistance. The Washington Capitals opened preparing camp Friday with new mentor Barry Trotz, who says he'll work, as different mentors have before him, to make the three-time group MVP into a more finish player. On the off chance that Day 1 is any evidence, Ovechkin sounds prepared to be a co-agent understudy. "On the off chance that you need to be great," he said, "you need to chip away at everything." Step No. 1, as Trotz had shown at one time, is moving Ovechkin once more to left wing, turning around a seismic movement under past mentor Adam Oates. Ovechkin headed the NHL with 51 objectives keep going season playing generally on the right, however his in addition to short was less 35, and...

...Introduction: With increasing globalization opportunities for trade new markets arise frequently. However, these prospects are not unproblematic, as communication between contrasting cultures brings numerous of difficulties. Therefore, it is an essential requirement for corporations to interact efficiently when doing business with people from a range of different cultures. The field of intercultural communication deals with this extensive issue, both on a scientific and on an operational level which mainly is focused on guidelines for optimal behavior in intercultural circumstance, e.g. Roger Axtells’ “Do’s and Taboos Around the World” (1993). On the scientific level, from a functionalistic approach “culture is seen as determining communication” (Net>værk 2002: 129). In the process of communication, here culture has an external influence in determining people’s behavior. On the contrary, also on the scientific level, the interpretive approach sees culture as engaged symbol-systems, which exists in the interaction between people. The interpretive approach therefore sees these relations between people in interaction with culture as determining the communication. Finally, the critical approach which shares many of the interpretive approach’s assumptions also includes an historical context as well as power relations, which combined is an integral part of the communication (Martin 2007: 63). The functionalistic approach sees communication as a linear process of information going...

Healthcare Ethics Paper

...Health Care Ethics Paper University of Phoenix HCS 435 Health Care Ethics In our society, health care professionals are bombarded with ethical issues in health care which we must firmly know the difference between right and wrong. However, in health care, there are many circumstances which health care professionals do not always make the correct ethical decisions. Theses ethical decisions affect society and the next generation to come. Therefore, the Patient Self-Determination Act is the main issue which affects our society. Generally speaking, the Patient Self Determination Act (PSDA) in most hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, and HMO’s routinely provide information on advance directives at the time of admission. They are required to do this by federal law. The PSDA simply requires that most health care institutions do the following: give you at the time of admission a written summary of your health care decisions-making rights, the facility’s policies with respect to recognizing advance directives, and ask you if you have an advance directive, and document that fact in your medication record. On the contrary, many physicians were not in favor of a policy for patient self determination because they felt that this would decrease their authority regarding medicine, interfere with the patient-physician relationship, and be one more legal regulation (General Accounting Office (GAO) Letter Report, 1995). However, the American Medical Association supported...

Code of Ethics Paper

...Code of Ethics Paper Jody Long HCS 435 June 21, 2010 Bob Vella Code of Ethics Paper The code of ethics is a list of rules and policies that is used to get acceptable behavior from members of a group, association, or profession. Each organization has its own code of ethics to work by. Not only does a code of ethics help with the confidence in the organization but also can show that members are committed to the ethical guidelines that are set before them. The code of ethics usually starts with a section that sets the purpose, aspirations, and goals of the organization. [ (Smith, 2010) ] American Nurses Association Code of Ethics The American Nurses Association was started in 1896. The American Nurses Association’s mission was to establish certain standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, advancing the economic and general welfare of nurses. Debate on Health Care Ethical Issues

...Debate on Health Care Ethical Issues HCS/435 Victor Gibb By: David Moeller, April Shaffer, Josephine Johnson, Rachelle Jacquay, Angie Wellman, Margaret Werzinsky Intro Supp Side The topic of euthanasia has been of much debate for many years. Throughout the outline varying sides have been focused on in regards to this topic. On one side there are supporters of euthanasia that believe that each individual has the right to make their own choices when dealing with the quality of life they want to be subjected too. Many are in favor because euthanasia can help decrease the suffering that terminally ill patients have to endure. Then there are those that oppose this line of thinking, “These people are convinced that no individual has the right to determine the end of his life” (Geiger, 2010). When discussing the topic of euthanasia this has been deemed an ethical issue because it deals with moral principles, which is different for each individual. Opp Side Supp Side Euthanasia is a topic that brings about much debate, but when it comes to an individual’s life they should have a legal right to choose what is best for them. Many in opposition of euthanasia go along with the view that it is wrong for a person to end their life and that it is right to have laws that prohibit such actions. But the question that arises is if this legal course gives a person the right that was granted...

Conflict Between Research and Ethics Paper

...Conflict Between Research and Ethics Paper Conflict Between Research and Ethics Paper HCS/435 Katherine Rossiter September 12, 2010 Conflict Between Research and Ethics Paper  This paper will share an opinion of the conflicts that exist between medical research and ethics in the subject matter of patients with mental retardation with medical condition such as hepatitis. In this paper the discussion of patient consent, benefits to patient, society, and medical professionals; therapeutic research; and research outcomes. Also this paper will discuss the potential role of institutional compliance and ethics committees, potential responsibilities of management, and the managerial approach one might have taken if one were in a position of power. When talking about patient consent there is many different types of consent. To name a few types of consent, incapacitated, decision-making capacity, surrogate healthcare decision maker, informed consent, expressed consent, and implied consent. When dealing with incapacitated consent this means that the patient is lacking the ability to make a reasonable medical judgment. In this type of consent there would be a surrogate decision maker appointed. Also in an incapacitated patient that has come in from an accident there would be an implied consent this would mean that the hospital staff would do whatever they had to do to sustain life. Decision-making capacity is one where the patient has full knowledge of what they want to be...

Medical Ethics and Research

...Kacy Noble Medical Research and Ethics HCS/ 435 March 7, 2011 Patricia Tobin Ph.D., LCSW Medical Research and Ethics In the medical field ethics plays a large role in dictating what is deemed acceptable. The role of ethics has changed drastically over the past hundred years. There are many well-known unethical medical studies that have taken place in the past. Current research is being questioned by ethics professionals as well. The difference between now and then is our resources. Now, thee are ethics committees who help make these fragile decisions. Research much now be approved and follow rigorous standards. Ethics has changed drastically and will continue to evolve, hopefully for the better, in the future. Many of the well-known ethics cases involving research are highly publicized. The ethical research case I chose is not as well known. Possible reasons of the lack of publicity might be because the participants were not physically hurt nor were their health statuses altered. William Laud Humphreys managed to produce research that is ethically wrong in which none of the participants were named or harmed. Could this be why his research is still discussed in many universities today? William Laud Humphreys was born October 16, 1930. Laud had two brothers whom he was never close to and did not have a favorable opinion of his father (TWU, 2010). Humphreys graduated from Seabury-Western theological seminary in 1955. Skotko University of Phoenix January 13, 2010 HCS-435 Ethics: Health Care and Social Responsibility Edward Casey Every person or family member who has faced a medical crisis during his or her lifetime has at one point hoped for an immediate cure, a process that would deter any sort of painful or prolonged convalescence. Medical research always has paralleled a cure or treatment. From the beginning of the turn of the 20th century the most unspeakable appalling atrocities against human beings was The Tuskegee Syphilis Study. One of the most horrendous breaches of ethics in The United States history is Tuskegee’s studies and associated research. . The study and the publicity that surrounded the study was one of the major influences leading to the organized arrangement of laws, rules and principles of the ethical treatment for human beings. Examples of which include; informed consent, patients personal autonomy, patients’ bill of rights, medical code of ethics, and limits to a practitioners professional autonomy. Miracle cures like penicillin and other antibiotics have proven the value of research. Many illnesses and diseases are currently under heavy research. Although not much research can give results that penicillin or other antibiotics have attained does not invalidate the necessity of research and the importance of it. Tort Hypothetical

...Introduction Employers are potentially liable at common (for personal negligence and vicarious liability for employee negligence) and statutory law. At statutory law, the legislative intention must be ascertained and whether this allows a civil course of action for damages. It must be established whether a relationship of employment exists between the claimant and respondent. This can be done by referring to the Employees Compensation Ordinance[1], or by using certain common law tests - put simply: the control; integration; mutuality of obligations - and multiple test. Employers have four non-delegable duties[2] to: employ competent staff; provide a safe place of work; adequate equipment and a safe system of work. Subsequently, it needs determining whether the accident happened during employment and whether the employer breached his duties. Vicarious liability is strict, determined according to the existence of a relationship of employment between defendant and tortfeasor and that the tortfeasor's negligence occurred during employment - determined by the close connection test. Sufficient causation between the breach and accident needs to be shown, primarily by using the 'but for' test. Defences to employer's liability include volenti non fit injuria and contributory negligence. GIC Colpo was already compensated per the ECO so determining statutory liability is unnecessary. Prior compensation does not prevent Colpo a claim at common law, as in Lung Yui Man v Yee Hing...
