Abstract
Modes of communication can come in many forms. Some may be accompanied with both benefits and challenges. To effectively communicate, four elements have to be present. Those elements, that consist of a messenger, receiver, channel, and feedback, have to be all present.

Communication is not a one way street but rather a four way intersection consisting of a sender, receiver, channel, and feedback. To successfully communicate, all four elements must be present to effectively relay the intended message. This practice cannot be over emphasized in health care, where every decision is based on sound communication between the doctor and patient. The component that can like the two together is electronic medical records (EMR), or personal health records (PHR). Despite the contrary, personal health records provide benefits and challenges to consumer and providers, but never the less provide a channel for both entities.
One added benefit of communication through PHR, is the improvement of patient health. Through enhanced lines of communication, patients and doctors can better discuss health related issues in a constructive and productive way. For example, Kaiser’s HealthConnect, individuals can view their own personal health records and immediately respond to any concerns to their physicians electronically (Kaiser Permanente, 2012). This enables the two parties to express and relay messages in a private forum where medical issues, though limited, can be entertained. According to Kaiser (2012), “Because KP HealthConnect includes more comprehensive patient information, it helps caregivers address multiple problems and/or the provision of multiple services in a single visit, reducing the need for additional follow-up appointments” (para. 3).
Patient confidentiality is extremely important when dealing with PHR. According to an article by Piquero (2011), “Identity theft has become one of the most ubiquitous crimes in the USA with estimates of the number of households being victimized annually ranging between 5% and 25%” (pg. 1). One way to combat this element is to place safeguards that will prevent unlawful and unethical access of medical records by both healthcare providers as well as rogue
MODE OF COMMUNICATION 4 individuals. Healthcare providers must provide a valid access login and password in order to view confidential medical records. In addition, IT infrastructure must be upgraded to meet the demands of security. The effects of unauthorized access of electronic medical records can be extremely costly for the individual affected as well as for the organization that let such violation occur.
There are many reasons why EMR and PHR is an effective method of communication amongst providers and consumer; but the most obvious is the increase of productivity and efficiency. The electronic communication exchange between the patient and doctor through a system such as HealthConnect, makes the very little time of providers to be used more efficiently without sacrificing quality over quantity. Consequently, patients are also able to make use of their time more efficiently as well. Routine doctor visits can be eliminated. In addition, patients can view records to monitor changes, for example, in blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This awareness will once again aide in the promotion of communication between providers and consumer.
By using PHR as a mode of communication, even though not a traditional method, it is still quite effective. This differs from others in many ways. Although unconventional, unlike the more traditional way such as verbal, EHR provides its advantages. Electronic communication arrives in a form of written and nonverbal process. Body language is not readily seen but tone can be made visible through the written message content. Regardless of its nontraditional ways, electronic medical records show it is an effective mode of communication.

There are other ways of communicating, such as social media. Like PHR, media and social networking arrives through in electronic form. The internet can be utilized to influence and target a certain population demographic. Information can be readily made available to consumers to inform, educate, and bring awareness to the public. This will only enhance the level of communication between healthcare organizations, providers, and patients (Anderson, 2012). The outcome is an increase amount of information that is accessible to the public which will also improve the health of many.
This mode of communication can be used to market health care products or services. As with social media, when viewing electronic mail, advertisements of products and services can be included. Though effective, this might have further consequences. At times consumers are opposed to advertisements when it does not pertain to their health or interest. This could cause a rejection of this technology that would otherwise be so effective in communicating to the mass population. Further results could cause the elderly, who are not technologically savvy in the first place, to misunderstand and loose the channel of communication. The ultimate result would greatly hinder the services given to the consumer and affect the health of many members.
In conclusion, personal health records can build a bridge between healthcare providers and consumer that carries both benefits and challenges, but never that less provide a mode of communication for both entities. When used effectively, the results can improve quality, efficiency, and productivity. Though effective, the system does have its flaws. Over use of advertisement of products can turn loyal customers the other way. Practices of this mode of
