Roles and Functions of a Health Care Manager

...Roles and Functions of a Health Care Manager Health care managers have many roles and responsibilities in health care facilities today. One of the most important roles of a health care manager is making sure the facility can run smoothly. Making sure a facility operates smoothly includes many tasks that provide one outcome, a productive and efficient facility. The health care manager takes on many roles and responsibilities including organization, planning, and controlling resources (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, &Kramer, 2007). Leading and influencing others is also very important as a role of a health care manager (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, &Kramer, 2007). No matter what type of health care facility a manager is responsible for there are many roles that carry over in to each facility such as caring for personnel, making schedules, keeping structure within an environment, regulating care, and managing finances or facilities (Writing, 2011). Managers within a health care facility tackle many roles on a daily basis. Caring for personnel can be made easier if the health care manager has an open communication line with all departments. Having inner communication in a facility can help to improve overall moral which will improve the overall quality of care provided to the patients who visit the facility. Keeping up with structure and scheduling within a facility is also a daily operation of a health care manager. I think that I would most love to walk away from this class after...

Role and Functions of a Health Care Manager

...Role and Functions of a Health Care Manager Schniqua Bennett HCS 325 April 23, 2012 Instructor: Vivian Perez Health care managers and administrators are increasingly assuming leadership and management responsibilities for multiple units and departments (Purnell, 1999). Managers on various levels in a health care organization, spend a significant amount of time on communicating, problem solving, decision making, collaboration with others internally or externally, people development, and cost containment. Managers perform these various tasks listed above through a process called management. The process of management consists of four cycles: organizing, planning, controlling the use of resources, and leading to accomplish performance goals (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007). The most important role a health care manager has cannot be limited to just one function because each function is equally of importance. But for this assignment, I would say a valuable function of a manager is leadership. In leading employees, a manager must have the ability, knowledge, and skills to take charge and lead the organization in the way it should be ran to accomplish the organizations goals. A leader/manager must be able to build up his or her employees’ enthusiasm to work hard to fulfill plans and accomplish objectives (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007). A manager must be able to work as a team alongside his or her subordinates, as well direct at the same time. Teamwork...

Roles and Functions of Health Care Managers

...Roles and Functions of Health Care Managers Pamela Baldwin HCS/325 April 4, 2013 Roles and Functions of Health Care Managers The role and/or function of a health care manager may vary based on what type of a facility one works in. For example, a manager that works in a long term care facility may oversee several areas of the facility with the help from other departmental managers. Managers that work in the hospital may oversee one or more departments (“emergency room, fast track and step down unit.”) However, the manager of a clinic or physician’s office may oversee the entire facility. Another manager is the clinical manager; they are responsible for creating and implementing policies for specific departments, and preforming the performance evaluations of the personnel, as well as developing a budget for the department. Clinical managers have experience in the health care operations in the department one oversees. The health information manager is responsible for securing and maintaining patients’ records. One of the most important roles of a health care manager is making certain the facility can run efficiently. The health care managers make sure a facility operates smoothly; this includes many tasks that provide one outcome, a productive and efficient facility. Roles and Functions of a Health Care Manager

...Roles and Functions of a Health Care Manager HCS/325   Health care managers play many rolls and preform many functions. In many cases, they are responsible for several lives at any given time and are in charge of any number of staff members. People in these positions must be comfortable with the work they are doing and be able to deal with the stress inevitably involved. They utilize the four functions of management to care for their charges. Those functions are organizing, planning, controlling, and leading (Basic Terms and Definitions of Management). I believe planning is the most important part of management functions. Without setting objectives and determining actions to accomplish those objectives, our role as health care providers, in general, would be pointless. There are various levels of management and all of them use planning as a major tool to ensure the organization runs smoothly and that patients are being taken care of. There are top managers, middle managers, and supervisors. The top managers, or executives, provide “organization’s major performance objectives and ensures that the rest of the company accomplishes the goals in accordance with the organization’s purpose (Lombardi & Schermerhorn, Chapter 1, Meeting the Challenge, 2007).” It is the responsibility of these managers to create and enforce the policies and procedures for the way to run a health care organization. Without these people doing their jobs, organizations would be in chaos and many...

I think that the most important role of function of a health care manager is planning. The function of planning plays a very important role by helping to anticipate the changes that are expected to take place in health care sector. For instance, if the number of diseases borne by mosquitoes is likely to increase, health care managers need to identify this expected change and incorporate the remedial measures in their planning. So, the planning function of management in health care setting is based on long term and as well as contingency based aspects. There are many ailments or epidemics that could suddenly spread and managers need to immediately plan on those lines. As a healthcare manager it is imperative to understand the importance of the managerial role. This essay will include the most important role or function for a health care manager, and what is considered by the author as the most significant aspect related to health care management. Definition of the role and application A health care manager has many roles. All roles in management require certain skills. Skills required to be a high-functioning manager include technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills. Technical skills are the ability to perform required tasks, human skills are the ability to work with others, and conceptual skills are the analytical thinking and problem solving techniques. These skills are a part of a manager’s role as head of a department or organization. According to Lombardi, “The roles managers must be prepared to perform fall into three categories informational, interpersonal, and decisional roles” (Lombardi, 2007, p.43). Operational Management: Roles and Goals

...Management: Roles and Goals All organizations produce products, services, or a combination of both, regardless of size, being public or private, not-for-profit, or for-profit. Because of this, every organization has an operations function. Managing finite resources in the production and delivery of the products and services requires operational management (Slack, Chambers, & Johnston, 2010). Operations managers are the individuals responsible for this function of the organization. In health care, operations management has roles and goals in managing these resources. The ambiguity of the type of goals and focus that exists in health care can make the operations manager’s goals challenging. This is why the proper roles are critical in achieving the goals. Goals Health care operations management is a discipline of management that utilizes scientific or quantitative principles to determine the most productive and efficient methods of delivering patient care (Langabeer, 2008, p. 6). Health care’s organization is complex and its relationships are ambiguous. The various departments seem to be independent from one another and have competing goals, such as financial, logistical, educational, academic, societal, or community (Langabeer, 2008, p. 19 - 20). The health care operations manager’s goals have to synch these various goals to create teamwork and unity. This will allow the organization to maintain and control of costs. There are five distinct goals for the health care...

While there are a variety of both roles and functions in health care management, the most important of them is leadership. Understanding the roles of management in a health care environment can only be an advantage to individuals in administrative positions. This, in conjunction with a thorough familiarity and appreciation of the functions within these positions provide managers with the tools necessary to achieve the goals of health care organizations. Health Care Management, as a class, teaches these roles and functions, enabling students to succeed in the career they have chosen. The roles of management encompass: interpersonal, informational and decisional. The interpersonal roles involve making connections with people both within and outside the office; the manager is the figurehead, leader, and liaison. The informational roles are the giving, receiving, and analyzing of just that: information. Decisional roles use the information attained to make decisions, problem-solve, and address potential opportunities (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, p. 13, 2007). These roles are interconnected each necessary to the others for an effective manager. The functions of management include: leading, organizing, controlling...

The four major functions of management in a health care setting are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Leading involves implementing the plans and helping employees work effectively toward accomplishing the organizational goals. The first major function of management in a health care setting is to plan. In order for anything to be accomplished, a plan must be put into place. Planning helps a health care manger and other employees stay organized. Part of the role of being a health care manager is knowing how to plan out goals effectively. Planning is utilized to enhance the role of a health care manager because it helps to identify goals clearly (Agriculture and Rural Development, 2001). When goals are planned effectively, the amount of time needed and effort that is used for achieving those goals would be reduced. The second major function of management in a health care setting is organization. Being organized helps a health care manager stay on track with day to day goals. In a health care environment, organization includes arranging tasks, people, and other resources that would assist with accomplishing the work (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007).
