In recent years, we have been experiencing a health epidemic throughout the nation. With rising rates of obesity and chronic diseases spreading through people of all ages, everyone is starting to become more health-conscious and considering what they are fueling their bodies with. Unfortunately, as a society, we have been misinformed about what foods are nutritious and mislead in the process of trying to find that out. The truth is, the typical American diet is by no means healthy at all. If you consider what the average American eats in a day or evaluate what is considered nourishing by the FDA, you will notice some vague and confusing evidence. In order to truly be rid ourselves of such diseases and unhealthy lifestyles, veganism is the …show more content…
Colin Campbell, he "was the only individual who did not have ties to the commercial world of food and drug industries and their coalitions" on the Public Nutrition Information Committee. This committee is just one of several committees with the aim of providing information about health to the public. Unfortunately, many of the reports released are done so with bias. A lot of the members on these boards and committee have such associations and are considered "pro-industry". They receive "benefits, including first-class travel expenses and nice consulting fees, paid by animal foods companies" (Campbell, 256). These activities are legal, of course, but it does not change the fact that this could case data to be skewed and made to look a certain way. We have been tricked into believing the various fads that have come along. Fads such as the consumption of foods that are fat-free or taking supplements because it is never a bad thing to consume more vitamins. However, our body is a system. It does not work on individual vitamins but a whole bunch of them. When eating fruit, for example, not only do you get multiple vitamins but you get fiber as well. Department of Health and Human Sources promotes the consumption of dairy products. Although they do recommend the intake of green vegetables, it is undeniable that their main aim is to get people to consume dairy as their main source of calcium. Included in their list of acceptable, healthy dairy products are the words "Fat-free" before every product (Calcium: Shopping list). The fat-free panic began back in the 70s. People were dropping dead left and right from heart attacks and the solution was to take the fat out of foods. This fueled the low-fat, high-carb fad diet. Unfortunately, people did not know what good fats and carbs were. They stayed away from all fats, especially the healthy ones, and steered towards refined carbs like white bread and pasta. In taking out the fat, more sugar was added to the food which only fed the spread of diabetes and obesity (Aubrey).
