Responsibility

...is not what we say, but it is how we say it. A quality education and career training are sound investments for a bright future, an illustrious career, and a successful life. Individuals who complete more years of education have greater access to higher paying jobs-such as management, professional, and related occupations than those with fewer years of education. “Where one goes to college can have effects on one's future education, occupation, and income” (Karen, 2002, p. 193). Self-discipline, sacrifice, patience, perseverance, and positive attitude should be sufficient motivating factors, and a reminder that a good education pays off eventually by reaping the fruits of hard work. Physical well-being, personal wellness, and good health are part of personal responsibility. “Participation in physical activity should remain a high priority to facilitate maintenance of healthy body weights” (Liebman, 2005, p. 95). Personal drive, ambition, and desire to succeed are necessary attributes that help in overcoming any obstacles. Volunteering, part of personal responsibility requires time, and flexibility to help less fortunate members of the community, and may work in homeless shelters, children’s, and nursing homes, hospitals, churches, correctional institutions, and schools. Learning from our past can help avoid repetition of mistakes in the future. Responsibility means doing the right thing and not blaming others for our actions. People who drink and drive risk getting...

The Importance of Socialisation

...mostly define a child’s acceptance and good relationship with things within the environment. Good socialization skills are developed when humans are exposed to as many things as possible. The more events that a child encounters and has positive reactions to, the better response he/she will have when these events are repeated throughout the course of life. It is important that you make the socialization process as entertaining and rewarding as you possibly can. This means that during this process, your infant will need to accept being handled and being touched by other humans so that she will not fear strangers (healthcare providers, or people whom they are introduced to.) This will prove beneficial when you have to take the infant to the health clinic per se. Make sure that all the experiences a child is introduced to are pleasurable experiences. That way the child will build a good association between the event and the reward. Human contact us necessary not only for the infant’s physical well-being, but for healthy social and psychological development as well. As infants grow, their inborn...

Critical Thinking

...The weight loss industry is making millions every year on Americans. So why are so many Americans continuing to gain weight at increasing numbers? Could it be diets and weight loss supplements are detrimental to the overall health of so many Americans? The unhealthy reliance on appetite suppressants and the restrictions of certain food groups generally don’t work in the long term and can even be dangerous. The low cost of diets and the promise of fast results can certainly encourage many Americans to diet. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than 20 million Americans use dietary supplements, including multivitamins, minerals and herbs. The rise of diet supplements from 42% in 2006 to 62% in 2010 has only fueled the growth of dietary supplements and diet plans to a multimillion dollar industry (Center for Disease Control, 2011). The weight loss industry encourages individuals to improve their overall health by dieting. The industry approach suggest people can eat poorly and just take a diet supplement and have the same results of someone who eats well, exercise and takes care of their health by getting regular checkups. This is farthest from the truth according to a CNN report. Dr. Roberta Anding, a registered dietitian and director of sports nutrition at Texas Children Hospital, stated “while some supplements can be helpful in losing weight they are not match to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “ Studies haven’t shown any significant difference...

They say that the average freshman student in college will gain about 15 extra pounds by the end of their first year in college. But, does a person of the same age group who didn’t attend college meet that same average? Now, I am not expert on nutrition, but I do try to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. It is not rocket science to understand that if you over eat there is a very good chance that you will gain weight, despite your age or gender. What other reasons and examples can we explore that will explain the freshman 15 theory or urban myth. Admissions Essay

...remember when I did some volunteer work for a nursing home and that was when I realized my passion for nursing. I believe that the cure for many of the people's ailments is not just in medicine, it is in the care that they receive as patients in hospitals and homes. This is where I believe that I can make a great difference in people's lives by helping them recover from their ailments. One of the philosophies that are very close to my heart is that I believe that the health of a person is all in the mind. A person is only sick if he/she thinks they are sick. This is kind of a caring theory that I believe in, which is that there would be no patients if everyone around them would just understand what they are going through and what is needed to help them. I believe in caring for the patients in a way so as to bring about a transpersonal caring relationship between the patient and the nurse/caretaker and the caring occasion/caring moment. I believe in this philosophy since it describes the various health and caring related issues and problems in a very different light. I believe that it is important to provide a patient with the right kind of atmosphere and environment that is conducive to his/her recovery. It is important to keep the room of the patient a place where he/she feels the soothing and healing effects from the environment. I also believe that it is important for the nurses to understand their own selves so that they are able to better treat their patients...

Personal Health Assessment

...Personal Health Assessment and Health Promotion Plan Abstract The purpose of this assignment is to gain a greater understanding of the health promotion concepts through self reflection. I plan to do this by identifying three self-assessment tools; a food journal, exercise log and sleep log, along with providing rationale for the chosen instruments. I will also address the Transtheoretical Model (TM), which stages I have gone through and which stage I am currently in. These tools and stages along with a wellness diagnosis will help me to develop a personal health plan. The outcomes of the interventions will be discussed and will include personal achievements and success. Personal Health Assessment and Health Promotion Plan The definition of health is very subjective; it can vary from person to person. What one person might consider healthy another might consider being average. I define good health as a complete circle of one’s physical, emotional, spiritual and mental well-bring. Personal health assessment is a key building block in understanding your own health. Once there is an understanding one can make plans for improvement. According to Pender “a thorough assessment of health and health behaviors is the foundation for tailoring a health promotion-prevention plan” (Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011, p. 89). Once my definition of health was clearly defined, I took a closer look at my personal health beliefs by completing the Health Beliefs Survey (Appendix A)...

...Child, School, Home: Determinants of Academic Performance* Cecilia A. Florencio Education Research Program Center for Integrative and Development Studies University of the Philippines Email: erp@cids.upd.edu.ph This study was concerned with the determinants of school-related behavior, in particular the relationship between health and nutritional status and academic performance. Such a concern is in place whenever our educational system sets for itself the objective of reducing disparities in education and raising the overall quality and efficiency of education. Although construction of new classrooms, provision of textbooks and other learning materials and training of teachers are necessary to improve the quality of education, it is illogical to expect that these will make up for the difference in learning that could arise because of biological impediments. The objectives of the study relate to (1) nature, magnitude and distribution of health and nutritional problems of school children; (2) relationship between nutritional status and academic performance; and (3) effects on academic achievement of non-nutritional variables, specifically those recommended in the 1976 Project SOUTELE Report. Some 2,304 pupils who were randomly selected from 64 schools in Region I, IV and National Capital Region in Luzon, Region VII in the Visayas and Region XII in Mindanao participated in the study.
