...in the workplace? Are psychological rights a natural evolution of basic safety rights or too much to ask of employers? I think that worker rights are properly communicated in the workplace but I don’t think they are remembered or understood in the workplace. Communication skills are essential no matter where or who you are. However, successful communication within a workplace can determine whether a business, company, or individual is successful or not. When you communicate well with your team, it helps eliminate misunderstandings and can encourage a healthy and peaceful work environment. Some ways to communicate effectively in a workplace are that employers can open meetings, one on one, use presentations and training. I think the psychological rights are natural evolution of basic safety rights. A psychologically healthy and safe workplace is one that promotes employee’s psychological well-being and actively works to prevent harm to employee psychological health due to negligent, reckless or intentional acts. I think the employers are required to make reasonable adjustments to working conditions or the workplace where that would help to accommodate a particular disabled person. I think that health and healthy living have become increasingly important issues both in society at large and in the workplace. The promotion of good health is unlikely to be effective unless it is part of a comprehensive approach to health and safety. The priority for employers should be to make...

A Look Into Health Promotion and Prevention

...Running head: A LOOK INTO HEALTH PROMOTION AND PREVENTION A Look into Health Promotion and Prevention Jody Seddon Family Centered Health Promotion February 12, 2012 A Look into Health Promotion and Prevention Health promotion definitions have varied among the years. Since 1986 the American Journal of Health Promotions gave the definition, which is the most well-known, “the science and art of helping people change their lifestyles to move forward a state of optimal health.” (Edelman & Mandle, 2010, ¶ 2) Since then it has become more about one’s own responsibility to take the initiative to live healthier and to obtain the education that one needs to assure they know how to do so. The goal is to prevent a disease from occurring or to lessen the disease and preventing further complications of the disease. “Health is concerned with the state of a person as a whole, including physical, mental and social wellbeing.” (“Promoting health in primary care“, 2010, p. 59) Nurses are imperative into assuring this can and will take place. In order for one to take the responsibility to lead healthier lives we must provide opportunities for education. Most unhealthy people are unaware of how to take care of themselves or how to obtain the information to assist them with the changes that they need. With the changes in healthcare today we must ensure the patients and their families are knowledgeable on their disease and disease processes and ways of prevention so they can take part...

Health Promotion 429v

...Expanding Role of Nursing in Health Promotion Robert W Lewis Grand Canyon University NRS-429V February 7, 2013 Nursing in the 21st century is being redefined. The population of the United States is increasingly diverse, with many cultural and religious influences on the health of the population. Legislative initiatives like the affordable health care act (AHC) will require a shift from the wellness-illness model to a practice focused on health promotion. When discussing a definition of health promotion published literature over the last 30 years has expanded and refined this role. One definition that is comprehensive is: Health Promotion is the art and science of helping people discover the synergies between their core passions and optimal health, enhancing their motivation to strive for optimal health, and supporting them in changing their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health. Optimal health is a dynamic balance of physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual health. Lifestyle change can be facilitated through a combination of learning experiences that enhance awareness, increase motivation, and build skills and, most important, through the creation of opportunities that open access to environments that make positive health practices the easiest choice. (O'Donnell, 2009) O’Donnell’s definition is broad and encompasses all of the areas of health promotion as it would be related to nursing practice. Health promotion might be viewed more clearly...

Preventing Diabetes

...Preventing Diabetes: A Literature Review Health promotion is defined as “the process of advocating health in order to enhance the probability that personal (individual, family, and community), private (professional and business), and public (federal, state, and local government) support of positive health practices will become a societal norm,” (Edelman 2010, p. 14) as quoted by Kreuter and Devore (1980). The purpose of health promotion in nursing is to convince those who create our public policies that slowing these alarming trends and focusing on prevention of diabetes needs to be a national priority. Those who decide how our public resources are allocated must understand the gravity of diabetes. The role of the nurse is ever-changing with the evolution of health promotion. Nursing is becoming more a profession of education rather than treatment. In the past, nurses administered medications and treatments to assist with the improvement of a patients health, and the relief of symptoms. Health promotion and disease prevention in nursing is now becoming the forefront of the nursing practice. Historically, nurse educators have taught patients how to manage their illnesses, but today, the focus is growing towards teaching people how to remain healthy. Health Promotion in Nursing Practice

...Running head: HEALTH PROMOTION IN NURSING PRACTICE Health Promotion In Nursing Practice Elizabeth Carhuapoma Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS 429 April Herrera July 08, 2012 Health Promotion In Nursing Practice As health care evolves and changes, the roles of nurses in health promotion and prevention have expanded greatly. The goal is to prevent disease from occurring rather than taking a reactive position of treating the client once disease has already occurred. Health defined by Edelman and Mandle is a state of physical, mental, spiritual, and social functioning that allows a person to reach their individual potential for optimal health (Edelman & Mandle, n.d.). In order to reach these goals, levels of prevention have been defined and nurses take an active role in the implementation of positive changes in clients’ lifestyle. On each level of the health promotion continuum, the nurse has to keep in mind the clients’ cultural and educational background to develop mutually agreed- upon goals. “Primary care providers, including nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses, now attempt to involve individuals and their families in the delivery of care, teaching individuals about individual responsibilities and lifestyle choices has become an important part of their job”(Edelman & Mandle, p. 9).
