Identify a Healthy People 2020 objective applicable to a population or aggregate to which you, your family member, or your assessment community belongs, such as adult Asian women, urban African-American adult men, or teenage athletes. Do you think the objective is attainable? Why or why not? What can you do as a community health nurse to assist the United States in reaching this goal?
In searching for objectives for young adult women, I came across a variety of pertinent objectives for the population. Specifically, I’m choosing to discuss objectives: C-18.2— Increase the proportion of women who were counseled by their providers about Pap tests; and HIV-17.1—Increase the proportion of sexually active unmarried females aged 15 to 44 years who use condoms (Healthy People 2020, 2013). I think these two go hand-in-hand when working to promote health for this population.
In 2008, 59.8 percent of females between the ages of 21 and 65 were counseled by their providers about Pap tests (Healthy People 2020, 2013). Healthy People 2020 set a goal of a 10 percent improvement, hoping to achieve a targeted percentage of 65.8. Data collected by the Health Indicators Warehouse (2008) demonstrated that persons of younger age, who are unmarried, disclosed a lower percentage of counseling than that of older, married adults. This is significant to me!!! With the STD epidemic is feels that we have in this country, wouldn’t education be sterner for these types of populations? On the contrary though, I do find the objectives made by Healthy People obtainable. In my opinion, these are subtle increases that really should be met. Health care providers should be knowledgeable of the importance of Pap test to screen for potential problems. It’s an important part of female health; and just like any preliminary screening, can detect potential problems early, leading to early diagnosis…...

...Healthy People 2020: Handwashing After reviewing the Healthy People 2020 website, I decided to teach a group of four-year-old preschooler’s proper hand washing for my teaching plan. To meet this need several health-teaching projects have been developed to educate the preschoolers on how to better care for themselves. This teaching plan would fit into the category of disease prevention and health promotion. According to Bastable (2010), health promotion focuses on increasing wellness through approach behaviors, such as hand washing, rather than avoidance behaviors. Also, hand washing is one of the most important and effective ways to reduce the spread of germs and decrease the risk of illness and disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). The most effective method for preventing transmission is hand washing. Participants will be taught the step-by-step instructions on how to properly wash their hands, and when they should wash their hands. Before eating, when preparing food, after shaking hands, after going to the bathroom and after coughing or sneezing will be emphasized as important times to wash hands. The most difficult part of creating this teaching plan was developing rationales for the instructional methods. There were a lot of influential factors based on development, learning needs and learning styles. I had to really think about the reasoning behind my methods of instruction and the intended audience. Once their routines were determined, I...

...According to Healthy People 2020, health disparity is a difference in health that is associated with disadvantages in social, economic, and/or environmental settings. Health disparities can negatively affect groups of people who consistently experience greater disadvantages to health based on various factors. Certain factors that can contribute to health disparities may include race or ethnicity; socioeconomic status; cognitive or physical disabilities; age; gender of the individual/s; and/or mental health. A group of individuals geographic location or community can also play a role in health disparity ( U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). One of the diseases that has demonstrated significant health disparities over the last few decades is Diabetes. Minority groups which include, African Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Latino Americans, constitute 25 percent of all adult patients with diabetes in the United States and represent the majority of children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). An individual of the Native American population is 2 to 5 times more likely to have developed Diabetes, while Latino Americans are twice as likely to have Diabetes in comparison to a Caucasian client. It is important for the health care system to make appropriate changes to decrease the incidence of Diabetes in today’s society, particularly with groups of the community who have the greatest......

...PLANNING BETTER HEALTH FOR THE FUTURE Margaret Carriger Grand Canyon University Trends and Issues in Health Care HLT-418v Georgeana Lass Drew, Instructor July 12, 2014 In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be affected. In reading the 42 topics, and after much consideration, I chose the 10 most important that I felt would be impacted. 1. Access to Health Services- The need for accessible health care is vital for the success of health equality and for expanding the well-being of a healthier life for Americans. 2. Cancer- Research and advancements in cancer treatment have seen a decrease in both occurrence and morbidity. Healthy People 2020 advocate the development in cancer research to assess the advances made in decreasing cancer in the United States. 3. Why a Western Diet Is Unhealthy and What People Should Eat to Be Healthy

...Student: Sbraletta Matosinhos, Bruno Why a western diet is unhealthy and what people should eat to be healthy In recent years, the concern for health is increasing. The main factors contributing to the declining levels of health in the Western world are a lack of physical exercise, paired with an unhealthy diet. Although this sounds like a simple problem to fix, the vast majority of people are not actually aware of the dangers of a poor diet. This essay will explain why a western diet is unhealthy and suggest ways that people can maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are several health disadvantages that a Western diet can cause. First and foremost is that the consumption of excessive calories often leads to obesity Agarwal (2008) reports that the USA has the highest daily consumption of calories per capita in the world, with 3770 calories consumed per person per day. According to Kemp, Paul and Segal (2001-10), a western diet contains a lot of sugar, which of course means more calories. To illustrate, 10 teaspoons of sugar are found in one cup of concentrated fruit juice. The typical diet in the USA has lead to sixty-five percent of people twenty years and older being obese, and this number is increasing (Agarwal 2008). Secondly, a typical Western diet is often high in unhealthy fats. Many standard Western foods such as red meat and dairy products contain a large amount of saturated fats. On top of this, processed foods such as margarines, candy and cookies are high in......

...The topic i'm choosing is the Healthy People 2020 goal for the pediatric nurses. I chose this topic since I am a pediatric nurse, I feel that I am in a great position to help parents and their kids prevent illnesses and be prepared for expected changes. The Healthy People 2020 have set goals for adolescents which are defined by the ages 10-19 years of age (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012) and for early and middle childhood. The Healthy People goals are made to improve priorities and increase public awareness of determinants of health, disease, and disability; providing measurable goals and objectives to determine progress in attaining the health improvement priorities; engaging multiple sectors to improve practices based on evidence and knowledge; and identifying critical research, evaluation, and data collection (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012). 11 objectives are set for adolescents this year. The objective that grabbed my interest was increasing the percentage of adolescents who have had wellness checks from 68.7% to 75.6% (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012). That objective grabbed my interest because I feel like I can personally help meet that goal by educating my adolescent patients and their parents to receive a yearly check up with their doctor. The goals made for early and middle childhood is to increase the proportion of children who are ready for school in all five domains of healthy development: physical development, social-emotional development, approaches to......

...overall health status Equality in Access to health services is one of the forty two topic areas in Healthy People 2020 that caught my view as one of the objectives to have the highest importance in achieving a national goal of healthy Americans in the future. But what does access to health care actually means? According Gulliford et al (2002), facilitating access to health is concerned with helping people to command appropriate health care resources in order to preserve or improve their health status but unfortunately gaining access to healthcare depends on some factors such as financial, organizational and social or cultural barriers that permits or limit the said utilization of services. Therefore having much available health services is not a factor in itself to improve the quality of healthcare but the utilization of such services by all of the people which will depend on affordability and general accessibility of the service. According to Healthy People 2020 (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2012), it is important to have access to quality health care service in order to achieve equity in health and eventually improve the general health status of all Americans. This I think is one of the most important move that the state should make in order to make the vision of having healthy Americans, including all migrants, ethnic and minority groups, by the year 2020. ...Entertainment in 2020 The world as we know it today is not the same as it was ten years ago, let alone five years ago. Technology is advancing at a drastic speed therefore causing everything attached to it to change; economy, demography, etc. The industry that we have chosen to focus on is the entertainment industry, with regards to the evolution of technology. We will be analyzing the different changes in the past decade and try to predict what the workforce will look like in 2020. The Generations X, Y and Z are the population born after the World War II era. By the year 2020, most of the population in these three categories will still be in the workforce, with only the ones born at the very beginning of “Generation X” entering retirement. Born between the early years of the 1960’s to early 80’s, Generation X witnessed the expansion of technology, with such things as the personal computer, video games, cable TV, Internet etc.. They are generally considered as very independent and self-sufficient because many of them were born in an era where their families earned two incomes and where divorce rates were rising. This generation was born into a faltering economy therefore witnessed the struggle their parents went through to maintain their jobs, they tend to ignore their leaders and are less committed to one employer because of that. According to the US Census Bureau in their 2009 statistical abstract and also the 2001 Canadian census on education statistics, Generation...

...one of the best leaders I have known. She appeared as “one of the group” and never allowed her position to be more important than the task at hand. A successful leader makes an effort to learn and practice skills. Some of the more essential components are: the knowledge and understanding of specific tasks; the skills and ability to communicate, build teams, vision, and take risks; and, a value for individuals, the group, and its responsibilities (Wall Street Journal, 2012). General knowledge about the organization, how a meeting is run, and the organization's business is essential (Kouzes, 2009). For example, an effective leader knows the purpose of the group or organization (why it exists), its goals (long-term plan), and objectives (short-term plans). Julie approached each of these dynamics with an intense passion. Her dedication to this was easily recognized, and it helped motivated each member of the team. Many times a good leader needs to have the ability to communicate, but just as important as speaking is the ability to listen (Hill, 2009). A good listener hears not only facts but also feelings. A way that Julie demonstrated this quality was through paraphrasing or restating the messages she was hearing. It showed she understood what was being said, and it also enabled the team member to feel as though they were behind heard. The ultimate characteristic that helped to define who Julie was is that she knew she could not be successful without......

Europe 2020

...Introduction The EU 2020 Strategy is the new growth strategy for Europe. Aiming at “smart, inclusive, and sustainable growth”, the strategy has a threefold approach that shall enable the EU to emerge stronger from the economic and financial crisis. With new priorities and new governance approaches, the EU 2020 Strategy moves beyond its predecessor, the Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs, adopted by the European Council in spring 2000. The Lisbon Strategy aimed at turning the EU into “the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economic area in the world capable of sustainable economic growth and more and better jobs and social cohesion” (Council 2000). The Lisbon Strategy has been criticized in particular for its “lack of focus and of embedding in national policy-making procedures” (Begg 2008: 427). The complicated governance and implementation structure of the Strategy was seen as major reason why several targets could not be fulfilled. Some shortcomings of the Lisbon Strategy were recognized early, which led to the reorientation of the Strategy on the growth and job aspects in 2005 (ibid.: 427). Nevertheless, the EU did not achieve several of the Lisbon targets in 2010, so that the Strategy has often been labeled as “failed” (Tausch 2010). The EU 2020 Strategy has been designed with the attempt to solve the shortcomings of the Lisbon Strategy so that much attention was given to the governance of the Strategy. After a short evaluation of the Lisbon Strategy, on 3rd...
