Facilitator Availability

I am available from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Central Time on most days, but I attempt to reserve Sunday for my family. During the week, I am online most of the time during that 9 a.m.-9 p.m. time frame.

On Saturdays, I tend to be online in the morning only. If these times are not convenient for you, please let me know. I will be happy to accommodate your schedule, if possible. I provide you with these times to make it easier to communicate with me, and not to limit our contact.

I want you to know that, should you need to contact me outside these time frames, you should not hesitate to do so.
For emergencies, when you are not able to gain access to messages on the Online Learning System (OLS), please send a message to my personal email address. In the event a third party needs to contact me, please direct them to my contact information listed under "facilitator information." No third party should use your login credentials to gain access to the classroom.
Where to Go to Class

Main: This is the main forum for the class and is where discussion is conducted. It has read-and-write access for everyone.

Chat-Room: This is a read-and-write access forum. It is designed as a place to discuss issues not related to the course content. This is the forum to which we will send our bios.

Course-Materials: This is a read-only forum, which means you can read messages here but cannot send any. This is where I will post the course syllabus and materials.

Individual Forum: You will see one forum with your name on it. This is a private forum, shared only by you and me, the facilitator. Your classmates will not have access to this forum. This is where you will post your individual assignments, and where I will post your feedback. You can also ask questions here. However, if you have general questions about instructions of assignments, please post those in the Main forum, since other students may benefit by that exchange as well.

Foundations of Child Development  Describe patterns and changes that occur in the three domains of development.  Compare the basic issues of child development.  Explain developmental periods in child development from birth through adolescence.

Course Assignments 1. Course Preparation  Read the course description and objectives.  Read the facilitator’s biography and post your own. 2. Readings  Read Appendix A.
 Read Ch. 1 & 3 of Child Development: Educating and Working With Children and Adolescents. 3. CheckPoint: Characteristics of Developmental Periods  Write a 200- to 300-word response that identifies and explains distinguishing characteristics of each of the five developmental periods. 4. Discussion Questions  Johnny is a 5-year-old kindergarten student starting school for the first time. What changes do you expect to see Johnny go through in the course of his first year of school? Be specific in your response, addressing changes in his physical, emotional, and cognitive domains. How might these changes impact Johnny’s behavior in the classroom?  According to the nature versus nurture debate, how might each affect the overall classroom performance of a student? Be as specific with your examples as possible.

Assignment: Health Issues Presentation  Develop a presentation for early childhood and middle childhood groups that addresses health issues appropriate for each developmental level.  Illustrate a program you believe will raise child awareness of the importance of healthy life choices and the effects of poor health choices. What inherited or environmental factors might change the normal course of child development?  Present your results in an 8- to 10-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation. Week Three
Cognitive Development  Identify the stages of cognitive development in relation to physical maturation.  Compare the theories of Piaget and Vygotsky.  Discuss cognitive strategies and metacognitive awareness. ------------------------------------------------- Course Assignments 1.  Prepare a 200- to 300-word response outlining what is considered normal cognitive development at each of the five stages of development: infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, early adolescence, and late adolescence. 3. Discussion Questions  Discuss one way in which Piaget and Vygotsky share similar ideas and one way in which their views differ. To which theoretical view do you relate and why?
 Discuss how you, as a professional, may be able to assist children in refining their learning and metacognitive problem-solving strategies. Week Four
Intellectual Development  Analyze how the implications of Gardner’s eight intelligences relate to the classroom.  Summarize the information processing theory as it relates to intellectual development.  Compare the potential influences of heredity and environment on intelligence. ------------------------------------------------- Course Assignments 1. CheckPoint: Multiple Intelligence Theory  Choose a topic (such as history or science) you feel is relevant to the age group you work with or expect to work with.
 Describe in 200 to 300 words how you can assess a child’s knowledge on your chosen topic using at least five of Gardner's intelligences. 2. Assignment: Information Processing Theory  Compose a 1,400- to 1,700-word paper analyzing the information processing theory.  Identify the components of the information processing theory described in the text.  Define the components and their functions.  Summarize the interrelationship among the components and explain what is needed to move information through the model.  Explain how a child processes information and how the process changes as the child grows older.  Explain whether you believe environment and heredity influence intelligence and information processing.  Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Week Six
Reading and Writing Development  Relate reading development to phases of maturation.  Identify strategies that promote effective reading and writing development.  Associate development of writing skills to levels of maturation. ------------------------------------------------- Course Assignments 1. CheckPoint: Reading and Writing Strategies  Post a 200- to 300-word response detailing strategies a concerned parent can use to help improve his or her child’s reading and writing skills. 2. Assignment: Reading and Writing Development  Compose a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper addressing the following points:  Choose two age groups from different periods in the physical development process. Give some thought to the age groups you choose, as you will focus on them in later weeks and for the final project.  Compare what you would expect to see in the classroom from each age group in terms of expected reading and writing development. How might this influence which reading and writing activities you would assign? What could you do to strengthen a student’s reading or writing skills in each developmental stage?  Organize the information in a manner that allows for an easy comparison of the two age groups. (There are several organizational options available to you in Microsoft® Word: tables, columns, and formatting of text.)  Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Emotional Development  Identify the stages of emotional development from birth through adolescence.  Discuss trends in the development of the perception of self.  Recognize the impact of emotional disorders on development. ------------------------------------------------- Course Assignments 1. Readings  Read Ch. 9, 10, & 13 of Child Development: Educating and Working With Children and Adolescents. 2. CheckPoint: Appropriate Emotional Response  Choose four of the emotional characteristics described on p. 375 of the text. For each of the chosen characteristics, identify what you believe is a healthy and appropriate emotional response for a child in infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Counter the acceptable behavior with an inappropriate display of emotion for each stage of development.  Post your response in 200 to 300 words. 3. Discussion Questions  What qualifies as an emotional disorder? Explain which emotional disorders are most common in children. How might these emotional disorders impact a child's development and learning?  A child’s perception of self varies by age and emotional development. As a professional, it is important that you recognize a child’s self-image as it relates to his or her development. How do strategies that promote a healthy self-image differ as a child matures from early childhood to middle childhood and into early adolescence? Why?

Interpersonal Development  Describe development of interpersonal behaviors.  Compare the holistic development of multiple age groups. ------------------------------------------------- Course Assignments 1. Capstone Discussion Question  Pursuing a profession in which you will be an integral part of a child’s development is a very important decision. Discuss what led you to make this decision and what you envision for both the remainder of your academic career and the beginning of your professional career. 2. Final Project: Developmental Process and Presentation  Read Appendix A.  Prepare a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, flow chart, or other visual aid to provide an overview of the normal developmental expectations for each of the five developmental stages. Your presentation must include a brief description of each of the five stages of development as well as normal expectations for each stage.  Compose a 1,050- to 1,750-word explanation of the development process.  Present a comparative analysis of the two age groups you have selected.  Clearly define and describe the stages of development the two groups.  Support your visual presentation.  Provide a detailed profile comparing the two age groups for each of the following developmental characteristics:  Physical development  Emotional development  Cognitive development  Intellectual development  Language development  Reading/Writing development  Social development  Interpersonal development  Format your paper according to APA guidelines.
