...Week 7: Checkpoint Urbanization Trends Urbanization is the population growth in urban areas due to rural migration. So, when discussing urbanization trends, we are analyzing the rate of urbanization mostly in terms of quantity. Growth trends that occur with urbanization are population (birth/mortality), income, and education and employment opportunities. Urban growth trends in the world’s poorest countries have led to massive overpopulation and expansion. Urbanization in poor countries is caused by increased opportunities. Urban areas are good places for employment due to their focus on a primarily industrial economy rather than an agricultural one which can be found in rural areas. People find opportunities in urban areas and thus move away from the rural areas to be at a closer distance to their jobs. Developing poor countries may have more promise of a bright future than a rural area. A major city in a poor, developing country is Lagos, Nigeria. Urbanization has occurred in this area due to huge population booms because of refugees and migrants from war. Their plan for urban renewal includes upgrading slum communities with roads, drainage, water supply, electricity, schools and clinics. This major city faces rapid urbanization which can be a challenge. The implications of urbanization in this area are political control and population growth and dynamics. Population has grown from 3,779 in 1978 to 19,167 in 2010. Another implication is that the country’s population...

Chart Helpful

...Did you find chart helpful? Can you think of anything you would like to know that was not in the chart? I did find the chart very helpful because it explains the patient’s problems extremely well. If the practitioner has not seen the patient before, the chart is perfect to learn the basics of what is wrong. I did think the chart was harder to read than what we viewed in class. I do think the precautions could have been expanded as the only thing I could find was the low fall risk aspect. Did you find the information easy to locate? Explain your reasoning or how you would improve upon the chart if you did not find it easy to locate. A lot of the information that is in the bulleted list was not listed directly in the chart. I thought the chart was more like a scavenger hunt as I had to pull information from different categories to answer one question. I liked how the vital information was added to every page of the evaluation, and each page of the therapy sessions. The papers were in chronological order, and I had to keep flipping back and forth to view categories. I think if all the information were in the same section it would make it easier to read. If the...

Helpful or Harmful?

...Helpful or Harmful? People are always looking for a better way to do things, a new and improved product, and exciting, unusual, and beneficial additions to their lives. The source of such finds often times come from outside the native culture in the form of a nonnative species, such as exotic animals, insects to control pests, or plants to improve health or diet. Looking outside one’s country for such answers brings forth new challenges for businesses and government agencies. In order to keep the environment safe and prospering, a government agency or business must consider how the invasive or non-indigenous species will react, adapt, or change in its new environment, what harm it can bring to humans such as health risks or destruction to an industry, and finally, if there will be any added benefits to introducing a new indigenous species to their country. These questions need to be researched before introducing such nonnative species into a new environment. Both accidental and intentional importation of nonnative species can have a negative effect on the environment especially if not properly researched. When nonnative species are unintentionally imported, great damage can be caused to the environment. For example, the balsam woolly adelgids were accidentally imported to the United States from Europe. The result can be seen in Source A. The Balsam Fir trees are completely stripped of needles and have the sickly appearance of a dead forest. When species are unintentionally...

Are Sweatshops Helpful

...Sweatshops The word ‘sweatshop’ in today’s world has gained a predominantly negative connotation due to the Western perspective of this establishment. The term evokes a variety of emotions from people without a great deal of understanding of what the term describes or the reasons for its existence. As always, every issue has two sides, and in the case of sweatshops, it can be viewed as either the violation of human rights and dignity or as the building blocks of a country’s economy. This raises the very pertinent question of whether sweatshops are actually helpful or harmful. This essay attempts to showcase an informed and logical argument supporting sweatshops. The US General Accounting Office (GAO) defines "sweatshop" as an "employer that...

Helpful Kids

...Helpful Kids PHL/458 Creative Minds and Critical Thinking Dr. Charles Osborne Getting the kids to help out around the house with the daily task of cleaning, laundry and doing the dishes was a nightmare. We would fight with them to the point that they would get grounded or even worse spanked. So one day my wife and I were sitting around the house talking about this and decided to true multiple different ways to get the kids involved, but without the hassle. After many attempts at all of those ways we came up with the “Hat Game”. This game proved to be a godsend and after five years we still do this every Sunday. As we were getting tired of all the uneccessary fighting and arguing with them to help us out, we slow down our yelling and showing frustration. We started to be very observant of them in what exactly made them do things without being told. As we watched we could see that they were very competitive kids. They always wanted to win at everything they did, especially between each other. We tried to figure out how to use this natural competiveness to our advantage and try to overcome this controversy. As we continued to define and evaluate the problem of the kids helping out with the chores, we failed lots of times. The kids would start fighting and then nothing would get done, except for me getting mad and just telling them to go to their rooms, leaving my wife and I to do all the cleaning. Some of the questions we asked each other were; how...

...Critical Thinking Assignment Haley, Jennifer APOL 104 D43 November 26, 2013 Part one The Question of Origin: In Buddhism, they don’t believe in an all-powerful God who created our world so they diffidently don’t teach it. Believers look to Buddha, their religion’s founder, for a model of how act. Buddhist view, the world is infinite in both time and space; the world is created and destroyed over and over again in a process we call, natural evolution. The Question of Identity: Buddhist considers everything living to be sacred and/or spiritual in nature. They also believe in reincarnation and a person’s spiritual future is based only on ones good or bad decisions in a lifetime which is known as Karma. The Question of Meaning/Purpose: The primary purpose is to end suffering. Buddha believed and therefore taught that people suffer because they are too wrapped up in things that do not give long lasting happiness and are too busy trying to hold to things such as, friends, material possessions and things that do not last. In the end it will only lead to sorrow. This is where the Four Noble Truths come into play: teaches that all life is marked by suffering, suffering is caused by desire and attachment, suffering can be stopped, and the way to end suffering is to follow the Noble Eightfold Path. The Question of Morality: Love, respect and compassion are three things that are highly valued in Buddhism as an ethical and moral path for their model of behavior. The Noble...

...within the school that needed immediate attention. Once I identified the issues and problems that needed to be fixed, I immediately began to search for answers. I have been in and out of the D.O.E. headquarters seeking help. Unfortunately, there is not enough funding. We have also requested assistance from our adopted government agencies. Unfortunately for us, this means of support has come to a stalemate. The problems that currently exist in Aua Elementary School are just too overwhelming for us to repair in a timely manner without any financial assistance. We have tried fundraising, but unfortunately the money that we have raised so far is nowhere near enough to make the repairs needed. So when I heard of the ACE Helpful Hands Program, I knew for a fact that this is an opportunity that I absolutely cannot afford to let slip by. Here are the issues and problems that we critically need assistance with and why we need a new face: • We have a major shortage of chairs and tables. So many of our students have to sit on the floor while in school. It is estimated that we will need approximately 30 folding tables and 150 chairs to accommodate some of our students that have to sit on the floor...

Are Gap Years Helpful?

...In the article by Sue Shellenbarger, “Delaying College to fill in the Gaps,” Ben Parker is a sophomore in college who experienced an academic turnaround. “Burned out by his senior year of high school from pressure to get into a competitive college, he quit his lacrosse team and let his grades slip.” He deferred his admission to the University of Iowa and enrolled in the National Outdoor Leadership School, a wilderness skills-training program. “He took a semester in Nepal studying language, living in a rural village and climbing in the Himalayas.” He gained the ability to enjoy hard challenges and stated, “By the time I got back to school, I was ready to be in school.” An increasing amount of students are taking a year off after graduating high school, known as a gap year. The article, “Should Your Student Consider Taking a Gap Year Before Starting College?,” states, “A gap year, sometimes called a year out, or year off, or bridging year, is a transition year, usually between high school and college, when the student takes time to do something else.” Many students believe that college is the next step when graduating high school, but taking a gap year is becoming a growing trend. High school students should take a year off before entering college because they will be motivated to return to school, because they will gain new skills, and because they will have time to decide on a career interest. Taking a gap year reignites one sense of curiosity for learning. Many students choose...
