“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality” (Desmond Tutu). Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr. were two men who were very passionate in what they believed in. Henry David Thoreau was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, and historian. He is well-known for his essay “Civil Disobedience”, where he expresses the need for more people to be individuals and think and act on what they believe in. Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist in the civil rights movement. King was known for his writing, “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” where he, similar …show more content…
The two authors also believe in nonviolent protests. Thoreau suggests a silent protest in which the people show the government their beliefs by not following its rules ways. For King, he offers non-violent protests such as sit in. Both show deep disappointment in their communities, Thoreau for his hometown in Massachusetts, and King for the white moderate. They both are tired of hearing how people what change, yet fail to show they want it. Thoreau deems these types of people as ignorant. Both King and Thoreau try to sympathize with these people, claiming that they do understand where they are coming from. They want to see people standing up for what they want. By sitting around waiting for the change, nothing is really going to happen. They want people to act right now, and by being in the middle, or neutral, the change will only be delayed even

more. Both activists acknowledge those who remain neutral, saying that they understand where they are coming from.
Neither of the authors show anger toward a specific people, however, they urge them to evaluate their decisions and wish they would change their ways. They wish to see people being and thinking individually. This is the only way to free themselves from the conforming ways of society. To incite and see change, one has to show rather than tell. If one wishes to see a change, they must act upon it right then and there. Waiting around for a “right time” will not benefit anyone. What if the “right time” never comes? Trying to make a change won’t hurt, but not trying to make a change at all

...THE CONSEQUENCES OF MASS COMMUNICATION Cultural and Critical Perspectives on Mass Media and Society Kirk Hallahan ii For Jean and Jenna Copyright info to be set by McGraw-Hill. iii Foreward This book is a brief survey of contemporary ideas about the cultural impact of mass media on society. The use of consequences in the title reflects the fact that most cultural researchers prefer this term (instead of media effects) to describe media's influence on human experience. During the past 30 years, culture has emerged as a major theoretical framework in which to investigate media. Chapter I examines how media influence culture generally, as suggested by various contemporary media scholars and others. Chapter II then focuses on critical-cultural theories about the nature of media power and its potentially negative influence. This book can adopted as a supplementary text in introductory mass media courses along with a survey text such as Joseph R. Dominick's The Dynamics of Mass Communication (available from McGraw-Hill). It also can serve as a foundational text for other assigned readings in advanced courses dealing with mass media and society, communication theory, or cultural studies. Students are encouraged to focus thoughtfully on the main ideas, not attempt to merely memorize details. Important concepts and names appear in boldface and are defined in italics. The abridged Subject Index lists the page with the primary discussion of each topic. Sidebars throughout...

Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...
