Hidden job Market Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to identify my own personal strategies to find unadvertised job opportunities. There are three networking techniques that I will be practical in assisting me in my desired job search and maintaining the contacts thereafter, they are Push, Pull, and Maintain.

Part 1:

Push: Reach Out to the “Hidden Job Market”
Simply defined, this means to “reach out to potential employers and potential co-workers, but reach out socially as a student, colleague, business colleague, or mentor not as a job seeker.” (Job-hunt.org)

It is said that most jobs are not advertised on the classified or Web job boards, which create the “Hidden Job Market.” In my strategic plan to Push I will consider the following ideas:

Volunteering (Internships)
I personally find volunteering one of the most beneficial strategies to reach out because not only will I gain skills and experience, but also the ability to network among peoples in the field that I find interest in. I currently hold a part time job and since I am getting near my graduation with in six months, it is a good time to seek an internship at a company that I am interested. I will inquire information in person or either calling or writing a letter to them and telling them why they would benefit from allowing me the opportunity to intern. If I am lucky I might even get paid a decent wage as an intern, that sounds cool to me, plus it will sound good in my resume also.

The Media and Business Press
I recently enrolled to a subscription to the Los Angeles Times from Thursday to Sunday for only $4 dollars a week only to keep up with current events and to read the Business section. I had been advised to keep up with current business news such as company ratings and forecasts by one of my previous professors at DeVry University. The professor stated that he was once a hiring manager at a company, and during interviews he would ask the interviewees a question on business related current. He says it was sad to witness that they were totally unaware on current business trends and news that resulted in a poor interview for them based on his interviewing methods. Where I am getting at is that I am aspiring to be a contributor to a company by having my own opinions on current news and the ability to forecast because there are always companies entering into new markets, announcing new products and services, and leading new marketing campaigns. If I speak of these things to a networking acquaintance or at an interview they will see that I have a competitive edge to me and can be fruitful to a company with my competitive ideas.
Pull: Bring the “Hidden Job Market “ to You
To Pull means to “become visible to potential employers so that they come to you.” (Job-hunt.org) A tactic to pulling is to build my own “personal brand,” making you appealing to employers and have them come to you such as through the Internet; we are more competitive today and becoming more dependent on the Internet. My ideas to Pull potential employers towards me include:

Develop and Make My Own “Personal Brand” Visible
In order to market myself I plan to create a networking file with LinkedIn as I am learning that it is becoming more and more important and useful to job seekers. “LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site that enables users to connect with colleagues, look for a job or business relationships and get answers to industry questions. LinkedIn users invite people they know and trust to become "linked in" to them, and the business connections of invited users are in turn linked. However, in order to reach connections down the line, request for introductions have to be made.” (TechEncyclopedia)

Post Public Comments on Blogs and News Sites
In my opinion, this is a good strategy to demonstrate my knowledge and intelligence by posting relevant and sometimes controversial comments in public places to build my credibility and personal brand.

Contribute to Amazon Reviews, Lists, and Guides
Since I like to write and consider my writing skills to be adequate I can benefit from posting reviews on books or other items on Amazon.com. I will write a review based on personal experience and opinion with intelligence; it is recommended that I use my “Real Name” for my Amazon alias to build my brand recognition, and if done carefully it will build my professional credibility.

Maintain: Keeping My Network Alive
It is important to maintain the network that I have built, even after I have landed a job. Networking is a part of my professional life, so I will always need it therefore will continue practicing it; after all, it is the door of opportunity to the Hidden Job Market and unadvertised opportunities. In order to maintain my network of contacts I plan on doing the following:

Staying Active in Business-Related Social Media
I think that staying active in my LinkedIn account will keep me in the loop, if I am not looking for a job I can be available to help others and keep in tough with my contacts. I also plan to continually improve on my person brand and stay active because there may come a time when I may need assistance from my network again.

Continually Expanding My Network
I plan to continue to expand my network overtime as I make a name for myself. This will be made possible as I meet new people, and joining an association with my professional field.

Part 2:

What's so Good About a College Education?

...that the valuable education I will receive will only further my chances of getting my dream career and lifestyle. If someone were to ask me about college, I wouldn’t respond with the typical “Can Opener” answer. It’s much more than just getting money. I also agree that comparing college to a can opener is almost idiotic, especially if you were to dig deeper and see that there’s more to a college education than meets the eye, which cannot be said about a can opener. While a college education helps in getting a job, it also goes beyond and above in furthering our experience and knowledge of the world around us. I wholly agree with the author of the article, clearly stating that college does not only affect our working lives, but every single aspect of our life, as we gain the skills to appreciate the little things more. We see things that other people can’t. That is truly invaluable to me, having the knowledge to look past the surface meaning and understand the hidden messages threaded throughout stories and movies. A college education is not a can opener. A college education is the stepping-stone through a variety of opportunities, like our author had stated multiple times. With college there’s obvious advances in science and technology, and basically even the future of our country. Employers trust us more as the college experience builds our character and outlook on certain things. I find this article magnificent, as it justifies my wants to pursue a college education...

Research Paper Lab 10

...Morgan Johnson (19407679) NS 1110  Friday Research Paper Lab 10 Morgan Johnson (19407679) NS 1110  Friday Research Paper Lab 10 The topic I chose for my research project is setting up a business on the Darknet. I think it would be more accurate to say that the topic chose me. I was originally browsing the internet on the various subjects presented to us in the assignment handout and had started reading a little about ecommerce when this topic jumped out at me. As I started looking into the other topics on the sheet, I couldn’t get the information about the Darknet world out of my mind. I think I have a bit of a fascination with the outer edges of society and that includes cyber-society. The secretive world of the Darknet is interesting in itself but setting up an ebusiness that may or may not provide illegal goods and services requires such an intricate system of safeguards that, for someone new to the tech world like myself, it is like opening the door to a bizarre and complicated dimension. Even after spending some time researching the subject, it would take hours more and I still would have barely explored the world of the cyber underbelly. The first thing a person needs to do when setting up a potentially questionable business, is to research various countries legal relationship with the country you’re based in. For the sake of this paper, we will assume we live in the U.S. Find out which have or don’t have Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties. When you figure...

Interview

...INTERVIEW Interview is a conversation led, which involved at least two people, the interviewer and the respondent. This is not a conversation, but the conversation through which the investigator wants to obtain from the respondent data set to study. Therefore, sociologists rightly point to the fact that it is a specific method of testing, which is assumed to work closely with each investigator and the respondent. The interview is a process in which the investigator is trying to influence the study posed questions and get him to give a speech on the subject of research. It is one of the methods, which allows parallel use of another-namely observation. The Opposition Article

...things are opposite, such as white is opposite with black, and the chaos is opposite with quiet. Recently I read an article called the daily grind: lessons in the hidden curriculum. This is an article describing behaviors and appearance of boys and girls in the class and after class. There are a lot of oppositions in this article and they are wonderful to compare with. In the following pages I am going to talk about the three oppositions in this article. They are the appearances and behaviors of boys and girls before and in class starting. Secondly the seats that girls and boys choose to sit. Finally the performances boys and girls perform in the class. To begin with, the appearances and the behavior girls and boys perform before class and in the class. Amy Wilkinson is a bold and brassy girl, and she is also strong willed. According to the book “she is fuller-figured than she would like to be, wide-hipped and heavy-limbed with curly blond hair, cornflower-blue eyes, and a sharply upturned nose. With the help of her mother, who is a drama coach, she has become the school’s star actress: last year she played Eliza in Weston’s production of My Fair Lady.” from this description, I can see that Amy is a really outgoing girl in front of her friends, because of two reasons. One is she is good looking, and from the hidden curriculum of school, which good looking girls are popular in school. Second is she loves drama and entertain people. Thus in my opinion she must be outgoing and...

Escape From Camp 14

... The first book that I read this summer was Escape From Camp 14, by Blaine Harden. The book retells the story of Shin Dong-hyuk’s escape from Camp 14. Camp 14 is a prison for the political enemies in North Korea, and in the camp Shin was forced to survive torture, starvation, malnutrition, and grueling hours of manual labor since he was a child. In a constant battle zone, Shin fought for food and was brainwashed by the camp into believing nothing existed beyond the fences he was trapped in. On January 2, 2005 Shin escaped from the North Korean political camp and was able to see beyond the fences when he was 23 years old. Shin then dedicated his life to sharing his story and is the only person to ever escape any of the North Korean political prison camps. The main impact of Shin’s story in Camp 14 is the psychological toll the camp took on him. At the beginning of the book, Shin describes that he thought of his mother as competition for survival (77), and this led Shin to do things like steal her lunches. The need for survival in the camp forced Shin to not have typical relationships with his friends and family, and the psychological toll of the camp returned prisoners to their basic human urges and instincts. This idea is similar to what happened to the boys in the Lord of the Flies when they began to turn against each other and view each other as a means for survival instead of friends. Another instance of the psychological toll the camp had on Shin was when Shin recalled in...

Characteristics of a Dystopian Society

...To begin with, there was a good deal of propaganda spread throughout the community in both novels. “They've spent so much money trying to convince people they can monitor all the TVs and computers, you know they couldn't have afforded to actually do it” (Haddix 68). This quote from Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix, suited this characteristic the most. People wouldn't risk themselves to do anything which might cause them trouble. The Government had spread news all over the community that every computer and television was monitored. They knew, with the news around, people would always be wary. But Jane, the daughter of a prominent governor said that it was just a lie. They couldn't actually afford to pay for it to happen. In The Giver, there are also quotes which exhibit how the figurehead use propaganda to control people's action. “He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realising” (Lowry 150). People in this community were given false information about what release meant. They all thought it was a good thing when really, it meant being killed. Propaganda is used in dystopian societies very commonly. The quotes exhibited how the Government used propaganda to control the actions of the whole community. Given misleading information also relates to the fact of how the outer world was being banished and driven away. When what is given to them is limited, people know nothing about the outside world. Consequently, they wouldn't refuse...

The chime that rings as the turnstile turns with a feeling of excitement. The first thing to see is an enormous Mickey Mouse head made out of beautiful flowers on the grass area in the back of the train station. Walking through the dim tunnel, a new world awaits. Through the wide road of Main Street stands two tall buildings that face each other, and in the two buildings there are stores, one including the Candy Palace. As I walk pass the store, it smells like vanilla. Looking straight ahead there is the beautiful, vast, pink and blue Cinderella Castle. A horse pulls visitors in a trolley, its horseshoe clanking on the road with each step it takes, coming through with a honk. Workers stand around grasping onto an enormous bouquet of balloons, which are bright and colorful. I see people taking pictures in front of the castle, children running around, and families eating. Walking through the Hundred Acre Woods, I see a tall Tigger. Children are squealing waiting in line to meet the character. Metal chains form the lines; people are swinging it, shaking it, all of which fills the atmosphere and all you hear is rattling. Approaching the character, I hug it and feel its plush fur against my arms and face, seeming warm and cuddly. People shoving buttery popcorn, turkey legs, and churros down their throat...

These devices come with an alternative for the traditional alphanumeric or QWERTY keyboard which is input in the form of user’s handwriting. The handwriting is then converted into normal text form. However, these devices require prior training to be done by the user. There is a high demand for robust and accurate recognition systems in the practical applications of handwriting recognition. The real challenge lies with the selection of a classifier which gives accurate results in real-time, while making the system self-adaptive simultaneously. Thus, in this paper various classifiers have been studied so as to find the most appropriate classifier for anonline handwriting recognition system for handwriting in Hindi language that provides a way by which the touch screen device adapts itself to its user handwriting without prior training is studied. My student’s husband then called the next day and spoke with my co-worker, Michael, who took all of his information and enrolled him. I received a phone call from my student the next asking why I had told her one thing and Michael had told her husband another. With Michael being new to the job, I thought he made a simple mistake, so I called and left him a voicemail suggesting that we talk about the students to make sure that we were on the same page in what we were telling our students. I then wrote my supervisor an email telling him what I did and said. Michael, upon hearing the message, went to his supervisor because he had the impression that I was trying to take his student from him. His supervisor went to mine asking what was going on. My supervisor explained everything and the matter was resolved. As a result, both the students did not complete the enrollment process or start school.
