The purpose of life is to have it make some difference in the world, no matter how slight that impression may seem in the grand scheme of things. As a student who attended Catholic school for 13 years, service opportunities were always readily available to me, but none impacted me more than my work with special needs students. My high school’s Options Program educates students with developmental disabilities while integrating them into the life of the school. Several other students and I volunteer with the program on a daily basis to act as teachers, coaches, tutors, and most importantly friends.

I have guided several students in their studies over the years, focusing on instructing students in social development and vocational exploration. Through my efforts to support and aid them in the school environment, for example by creating accessible research procedures, I could maximize students' potential while enabling their independence - the final goal of the program. On the other hand, the experience has affected my own self-esteem and outlook on life. I grew immensely throughout high school, my interpersonal skills improved, erudition broadened, and self-confidence strengthened, thereby transforming me as a leader. My interactions with the mentally disabled enabled me to discover that we are all the same. Genetics don’t define someone, so there is no reason to treat a person any differently because of it. As the current captain of my cheer team, which now has two Options teammates, I have taken this valuable knowledge into account when leading the whole team. My goal as their captain is to instill this perspective in their minds so that they can become better leaders as

...Company Background In April 2008, six Brescia University College students: Kathryn Kielstra, Breanne MacHardy, Lynn Mockler, Tara Price, Sunali Swaminathan and Ruth-Elen Tisdale were nearing the completion of their Management and Organizational Studies Program. They were considering launching Pack-iTS, an entrepreneurial venture. Pack-iTS would be a healthy lunch preparation and delivery service, serving elementary schools within the Thames Valley District School Board in London, Ontario. The six-person partnership had$25,000 to invest, but needed to know if additional financing would be required. The Pack-iTS lunch program would provide flexibility for parents and children. Parents would select from a variety of menu options, as well as the regularity. The lunches would be prepared and assembled at a Pack-iTS facility. The lunches would then be marked with the teacher’s name and put into a container for delivery. A consideration for the partners was to position the program as a fundraising initiative, where a portion of the gross sales would be donated to the school. The main objective of Pack-iTS is to promote healthy eating habits and reduce parental stress associated with planning. According to results from a Canadian Community Health Survey, obesity rates among children and adults had increased substantially during the past 25 years. ...they are absent (or late) from school. No record is stored when they are present. This is the easiest approach in terms of record entry. This system is also designed to accomodate the problems of K-12 schools that may have different attendance periods per day for different grades. ( K-6 may have 2 attendance periods per day (Morning and Afternoon) while 7-12 have 6 periods per day, that correspond to teaching periods ). Background of the Problem The success of the school in carrying out its primary charge of educating and socializing students is contingent on students attending school regularly. In recognition of the importance of regular school attendance to quality education, attendance becomes a priority goal (At-Risk Youth in Crisis Handbook, 1993). Educators have long emphasized the importance of class attendance. Only in the classroom may the student hear the teacher's presentation, participate in class discussions, and enjoy the benefits of spontaneous interactions between the students and teacher. It comes as no surprise that students with high absence rates earn lower grades than students with better attendance (Redick & Nicoll 1990). Fleming and Zafirau found that over three-fourths of school failure rates were explained by the attendance rate (Fleming & Zafirau 1982). Student absenteeism has been a problem for years. State departments of education and school boards across the country have developed policies, procedures, and programs aimed primarily with the objective...

The reason is the lack of funding and it must choose among options for the expansion of LEADER. You may expand the LEADER to Cuba this year or in the coming years, or you may choose to increase the number of partner sites in Russia itself. The option should satisfy the LEADER’s objective, give experience to the volunteers and participants, and make a good relationship with the universities. It is recommended that LEADER should expand its project to Cuba by taking a few calculated risks and must provide real value to the participants from Cuba. That is why in recent years high schools have started to encourage students to pursue a college education as well as begin to prepare the students for college. The current methods high schools are implementing offer general ways of preparing students for college that are often times ineffective and lack proper execution. Since college preparation is critical for high school students to increase their chance of successfully graduating from college, it is now more crucial than ever before to provide proper college preparation for tomorrow’s college students. However college preparation requires more than just helpful techniques for studying and teaching yourself. College preparation also requires a good amount of hard work and learning core subjects that form the foundation for which we build our...

Industry Analysis

...INDUSTRY ANALYSIS OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE UNITED STATES Matthew Gerlitzki Strategic Management - MBC 645 Professor Wimer May 11, 2016 Industry Definition This is an industry analysis paper of the Colleges and Universities in the United States and it is important to begin with a definition. A goal of an industry definition and boundaries scope must not be too narrow or broadly defined because this will alter the scope of the analysis and result in a skewed conclusion. I will begin by differentiating between non-profits and for-profits businesses due to the different strategies involved within management in attempt to maintain the scope of this analysis. At first thought this seems irrelevant, however, the internal and external environments of these two types of business structures are different and management must prioritize accordingly. In academia, the for-profit institution must operate similar to a regular business with a focus on profitability that will satisfy stakeholders rather than focus primarily on the quality of education. The non-profit institution will focus primarily on education and student success, which will contribute to the brand awareness and prestige that will be discussed later. An analysis of the Colleges and Universities in the United States will be limited to non-profit private and public institutions that offer Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees. Bachelor’s (undergraduate) degrees are the first program of study...

...effectiveness, and achievement of desired performance outcomes are minimal requirements for any organization’s success. These requirements demand a measurement system relative to an organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan. This chapter discusses methods for establishing such systems. In doing so, we echo Worth’s (2012) concern that “nonprofit managers must be committed to performance measurement but should not become overly focused on it to the detriment of delivering their mission’s programs” (p. 157). Performance measurement Process Before engaging in performance measurement, it is vital to understand the level and scope of the process. Measurement can be conducted for effectiveness or performance at the program/project or organizational level. Effectiveness relates to achieving the mission, while performance is a broader concept that considers financial results and other variables related to the overall organization. Once the scope and level of analysis are determined, several questions should be answered about the evaluation process: 1. WHAT is to be evaluated—or assessed for effectiveness? 2. HOW should it be assessed? 129 130 • INTRODUCTION TO NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT 3. WHO is responsible for conducting the assessment? 4. TO WHOM should the results be reported? Budgets and other resource constraints may influence the answers...

...Policy Analysis on Education LaKeesha K. Carpenter Dr. L. Saye PAD 520 January 22, 2012 Abstract In this policy analysis I talk about education. Educational systems around the world, and specifically in the United States, have long been awaiting for genuine reform efforts. Technology is often perceived as a panacea, if not as a crucial instrument in any educational reform effort. New understandings, as opposed to mere information, is what schools need to reach in order to transform themselves to new and effective reforms and make current policies work throughout the state and country. The data in this report represent national averages. The experiences, trends, and issues in your local community may vary somewhat from the broad picture presented here. We hope this primer will provide you with sufficient background information about public education to encourage your interest in education issues and your involvement in your local schools. | | | | | Education is needed to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence. Education is needed for humans to make an impact on society, and to make viable decisions and the right moves at the right time. It leads to better jobs and higher income, health and life expectancy, voter turnout, self-worth and dignity. Education trains the mind to think and make the right decisions(2006).
