MOOCs as the Remedy for Higher Education

Abstract Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have recently developed into a popular topic of discussion in higher education forum. Undeniably there are a lot of problems existing in current mode of traditional higher education such as affordability, quality and flexibility. This paper will argue that MOOCs serve as a remedy to address the problems of higher education. 1) MOOCs are made to be affordable to every student who would like to learn, resolving the affordability of higher education; 2) MOOCs initiated interactive classes through various technological applications, to enhance the quality of class learning; 3) MOOCs allow for flexibility to cater to people with different needs or difficulties. Overall, despite some of the limitations, MOOCs could still serve as a remedy to resolve some problems with current higher education but they are certainly not a replacement of traditional higher education.

The technology boom has led to a new trend in higher education – MOOC mania. A Massive Open Online Course, by definition of Tamar Lewin in his “Universities Abroad Join Partnerships on the Web”, is an online course for large-scale interactive participation and open access via the web. Besides traditional course materials, MOOCs offer interactive forums that build a learning community that involves both teachers and students (Lewin). MOOCs are widely recognized by its interactive and convenient online learning platforms, and its openness to the general public. Increasingly, MOOCs’ popularity has been extended to a larger audience. Every minute, there are people across the world, regardless of wealth, age and gender, signing into MOOCs to watch free or cheap online courses to enrich themselves for higher education. Despite the criticisms about MOOCs disrupting the structure of traditional universities or MOOCs...

...OSMAN KHANUNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL PUNJAB | HIGHER EDUCATION | LITERATURE REVIEW | HAFSA KHAN L1F15MSMK0007SAIRAZAKIR L1F15MSMK00085/28/2016 | LITERATURE REVIEW: THE CONCEPT OF BRANDING IN HIGHER EDUCATION Bennett and Ali-Choudhury ( 2007 p4 ) suggest that a university brand is “a manifestation of the institution’s features that distinguish it from others , reflect its capacity to satisfy students’ needs, engender trust in its ability to deliver a certain type and level of higher education, and help potential recruits to make wise enrolment decisions”. Stamp (2004) gives a number of factors for higher education (HE) branding agenda, that includes;tuition fees, competitive differentiation, league tables, organizations attaining university status and the miss-match between brand perceptions and delivery. Researchers have to continually ask why some organizations are more successful than others in brand building in order to understand branding.(Urde, 2003). It has been suggested that “Higher Education Institutions need to be managed more and more as corporate brands” (Whelan & Wohlfeil, 2006, p317), but instead of the fact that there is a large number of studies that examined image and reputation, the notion of branding has very little marks on higher education marketing literature (HemsleyBrown and Oplatka, 2006) and empirical papers that relate to HE branding are scarce (Hemsley-Brown and Goonawardana, 2007)....

...What a person chooses to do with his or her education is the most important thing. What people do not really understand is the purpose of the education they get. What is better, is it getting good education so that one has the necessary life skills or to just get a degree and then later land on a high paying job? Around the country, there are very many state schools which all offer excellent education. In the schools you can find many classmates from various states who have a similar burning urge to get education like you. (Mead, 832). Education in these state schools aims at a few things in transforming an individual. The education gained can be to nurture a person’s thought to various issues so that one can think critically. The education received is also important in exposing to an individual to the various accomplishments that man has done on earth (Ken, 437). Education also develops in a person an ability for an individual to respond intelligently to a question after listening to the question in an active manner (Ken, 437). If someone wishes to come out with the good gained in education in a college then Rebecca Mead will be in support of the college education the individual is very ready to know new things by learning so that he or she can get the most out of what has been taught. The learner should not be only after a degree (Ken, 538)....

...Essay 1 Draft 2 The artifact I chose to write about is Montclair State University’s Business Administration Major; with the focus in Sports, Events and Tourism marketing. This major helps student expands their knowledge and social skills revolving around sports, events and tourism. In this essay you will see comparisons and direct quotes from Mark Edmundson, Michael S. Roth, and James Baldwin. I want to show the connection of how important it is to find what you love and how money should be a factor in your undergrad study but not the only factor because you’ll be doing whatever you major in for the rest of your life. The business school’s mission statement for the program; “The Sports, Events, and Tourism Marketing program provides students the knowledge and skill sets to be successful in the growing workforce of the sports, events, and tourism sector. This program incorporates marketing concepts along with management skills to provide students with a diversified and competitive edge.” I was able to talk to a student who was studying my artifact. I asked him, “ are you in your study for the money or because you actually love what you’re going to do for the rest of your life?” he replied, “ I do like what I’m going to do, but I know there is a lot of money involved.” After talking to a student who was enrolled in this major, left me with the question, “ Is college about finding what you love or making a lot of money?” In class we had discussed the characterization of......

...Elizabeth Weld English 101 September 18, 2014 The debate of higher education is always a hot topic in the United States. Many share the opinion that college is the way to go for success in this ultra competitive world, but on the other hand there are some who believe college may not be for everyone. Two articles discussing this topic are Mike Rose’s “My View: Should Everyone Go to College?” and Karen R. Lawrence’s article “What Value Really Means in Higher Education”. The articles similarly talk about how college is the best choice for one’s success in the future; however, the two articles differ in their overall messages they are trying to convey to the reader. Mike Rose’s focus is to make the readers who are potential college students think about college as a strong option. Rose uses his own personal life experiences, along with specific facts about education to paint a picture of how higher education is a viable option. On the other hand, Lawrence uses a more direct and sterile approach to convince her audience, of educational professionals, to focus on teaching specific abilities to their students. Karen Lawrence’s purpose is to persuade the reader that higher education should give one the tools needed to be successful in the real world beyond an immediate earning potential. The basis of her article is to illustrate the specific skills that need to be taught in higher education....

...Western Components Sally Jones is a new marketing manager at Western Components. This company manufactures a variety of pinions, gears, and other component parts used by companies around the world. However, their major customer is a west coast aircraft manufacturer. Currently, Western has substantial excess capacity because of this customer’s production problems, which have temporarily reduced demand for Western’s components. This has had a significant effect on profit since Western’s workers are highly skilled, and the company does not want to reduce headcount during this temporary downturn. To increase demand, Sally has suggested to the vice president of marketing that Western lower bids, which in the past have averaged 25 percent above total production cost. Sally’s boss has suggested that she do an analysis supporting her suggestion. Last week, Sally received an invitation to bid on a job for Husanti Industries, and she has decided to determine whether a “low” bid is warranted for this customer. From the production department, Sally received an estimate that the job will require 2000 labor hours, 8000 machine hours, and material cost of $178,000. Cost accounting has indicated that the average labor cost is $22 per hour. The cost accounting department indicated that the standard overhead rate is $34 per machine hour. This rate was determined at the start of the year based on an estimate of $23,800,000 of overhead and 700,000 machine hours. Since her......

Higher Education Funding for State Higher Education

...Malone, Secretary of Education FROM: , Analyst of Sate Higher Education RE: Higher Education Funding for State Universities. Date: November 7, 2014 I. Introduction Higher education is crucial to economic prosperity; it serves as the essential final step for students advancing through our state education system. The skills of a state workforce have grown progressively more important over the last three decades, with increasing educational completion correlated strongly with higher wages. Additionally, a recent study from Georgetown University revealed that approximately 62 percent of jobs will require some form of college education by the year 2018 compared to the mere 28 percent in 1973.1 Nevertheless, regardless of the evidence that college and higher education are essential to our future, Massachusetts has eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars from public higher education funds in recent years. When state support for the university and community college systems is reduced the students in those universities are forced to pay higher tuition and fees. With increasing costs, the amount of money a student must take out in loans also rises. Public higher education funding has suffered numerous dramatic cuts over the past decade. State spending on higher education, including funding for the UMass system, Community Colleges as well as State Universities has declined 31 percent from 2001 to 2013....
