The artifact I chose to write about is Montclair State University’s Business Administration Major; with the focus in Sports, Events and Tourism marketing. This major helps student expands their knowledge and social skills revolving around sports, events and tourism. In this essay you will see comparisons and direct quotes from Mark Edmundson, Michael S. Roth, and James Baldwin. I want to show the connection of how important it is to find what you love and how money should be a factor in your undergrad study but not the only factor because you’ll be doing whatever you major in for the rest of your life.
The business school’s mission statement for the program; “The Sports, Events, and Tourism Marketing program provides students the knowledge and skill sets to be successful in the growing workforce of the sports, events, and tourism sector. This program incorporates marketing concepts along with management skills to provide students with a diversified and competitive edge.” I was able to talk to a student who was studying my artifact. I asked him, “ are you in your study for the money or because you actually love what you’re going to do for the rest of your life?” he replied, “ I do like what I’m going to do, but I know there is a lot of money involved.” After talking to a student who was enrolled in this major, left me with the question, “ Is college about finding what you love or making a lot of money?” In class we had discussed the characterization of students by Edmundson; consumers, deeply impacted by society, desperate to blend in, unengaged, low energy, and lack of confidence/ sensitive. I thought to myself… where does this student stand? I felt as if he was deeply impacted by society. Even though he said he did like what he was doing, the money is still the main focus. Maybe you’re concerned about access for low-income students. Maybe you want graduation rates to be higher. Maybe you wish more people were getting degrees in math and science. Or something else entirely. Whatever it is, you wish things were different, that colleges and universities would collectively be more focused and diligent and effective at pursuing whatever goal you care about most. What should you do?
