...Keisha Jackson Professor: Steve Klense Introduction to Health Services Management The Johns Hopkins Hospital The Johns Hopkins hospital was founded in 1889 and four years later the Johns Hopkins University School of medicine was opened. They had an up graded medical school curriculum with emphasis on the scientific method, which included the incorporation of bedside teaching and laboratory research as part of the instruction and integration of the school of medicine with the hospital through joint appointments. Hopkins medicine is the first major medical school in the United States to admit women; the first to use rubber gloves during surgery; the first to develop renal dialysis and CPR. Two of the most far-reaching advances in medicine during the last 25 years were made at Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins are also known for the identification of the three types of polio virus and the first “blue baby” operation, which opened the way to modern heart surgery. They are also the first to conduct many medical specialties, including neurosurgery, urology, endocrinology, and pediatrics. ...The topic of this week’s discussion is related to the integration of electronic medical record (EMR) systems at RURAL family practice settings. Such settings increase the challenges of implementation mostly due to resource limitations. Typically, smaller practices suffer from lack of in-house information technology support and limited IT budgets. In this scenario we will discuss how small organizations can successfully implement EMRs, enhance their core mission of delivering quality care, and minimize security and patient health risks. The family practice we are investigating has been established in the New Tampa area in 1990*. Currently it employs 3 physicians, one nurse practitioner, one nurse and two staff assistants.  It provides services to more than 1500 patients and last year had 4000 patient visits.  When the practice first opened, each patient’s chart included a double-sided standard sheet of paper created for each visit, test results, images, progress notes, prescribed medication and demographics information. The size of these charts has been increased exponentially since then and in 2009 the practice has decided to move forward with an EMR implementation. The practice has been using an electronic billing and scheduling system for years, however the personnel was skeptical for the EMR implementation since an unsuitable system could destroy the continuity of the patient’s medical record, incur additional costs and disrupt patient care and staff function.  A committee...

...Max Pasamonte Nika Cavat Noir 10/22/13 Clarkson I swear it feels like every night I come to this bar. It smells like shit, and it’s so dark I can’t even see who’s sitting at the booth in the far corner. I can’t tell if this rotting fish smell is coming from the ocean outside the window or from the kitchen in the back. This fucking bartender won’t even acknowledge my existence. All he cares for are these sluts at the bar and his “best friend,” Derek. Derek is supposed to be my best friend, my blood brother. He has no respect for his job, look at him. We are supposed to be on call! I’m in uniform, the patrol car is outside, and somehow during our entrance he has changed into his nightclothes and picked up another two girls. He drags them in to this the fucking bar, sits on my right and has both girls sit on his right. What a selfish fuck? Not that I really need a woman’s company, after all, we’re on call. But how he can be so ignorant to have them sit to his right, stealing both of their attention. Listen to them laughing at his pathetic jokes. He’s an animal. Look at this bartender laughing is ass off, what does he want to suck his dick too? “Clarkson! You look tired!” The bartender shouts above the music. “Perhaps another White Russian.” “A what,” I replied? “A White Russian. That disgusting coffee shit your always drinking.” Confused with what he was referring to, I just ordered a Levitt. Nothing like the way whisky allows my conscience to sink...

Stalking Him

...Stalking him I am in love with a guy named Josh. Well, I guess the word "love" is a little strong. The trouble is, he knows it. I called him one day, just to hear his voice. It was a lame thing to do. Still, I did it anyway. Sometimes my heart just totally rules over my brain, it's pathetic. Anyway, I called him from my babysitting job, and he answered, and then I just sat there like a lunatic, listening to him say, "Hello? Hello?" He hung up, but a couple of minutes later, the phone rang. It was Josh. It turned out he had caller ID. And of course he recognized my voice when I answered. "Zilky? Is that you?" he asked. "What are you doing at this number?" I could have died! After that, he traded the old nickname he had for me, "Zilky", and started calling me "Stalker". Not exactly the term of endearment. Anyway, like I said, I like Joshua a lot. But I've decided to move on. See, he was totally in love with this girl Lisa, but she moved away and broke Josh's heart. So I started hanging around, making him cookies and stuff, trying to help ease his heartbreak. I thought maybe in the process he might open his eyes and see me, Emily, instead of his pal Zilky. But as I said, things didn't work out as planned. Now I'm Stalker. So tonight I'm going to Kelly Blake’s party with Charlie Cain. It's kind of the drastic measure, since I don't really like Charlie, but it's a statement. I want Josh to see I'm not pinning away for him. When we get to the party, the first person I see is Josh...

Everything Stuck to Him

...Everything stuck to him I went to Milan from Christmas and I really want to know what it was like when I was a child. “I asked my father, tell me what it was like”, as i sip the Strega, waiting for him to answer me. “ That was along time ago”, my father said. “almost twenty years.” “You can remember”, I say as he is thinking of the story he is going to tell. “ I could tell you about something that happened, They were kids themselves, but they were crazy in love, this eighteen-year-old boy and this seventeen-year-old girl when they married. Not all that long afterwards they had a daughter. The baby came along in late November during a cold spell that just happened to coincide with the peak of the waterfowl season. The boy loved to hunt, you see. That’s part of it. The boy and girl, husband and wife, father and mother, they lived in a little apartment under a dentist’s office. Each night they cleaned the dentist’s place upstairs in exchange for rent and utilities. In summer they were expected to maintain the lawn and the flowers. In winter the boy shoveled snow and spread rock salt on the walks. Are you still with me? Are you getting the picture? I am, she says. That’s good, he says. So one day the dentist finds out they were using his letterhead for their personal correspondence. But that’s another story. He gets up from his chair and looks out the window. He sees the tile rooftops and the snow that is falling steadily on them. Tell the story, she says. The two...

I Love Him

...his study was conducted to discover whether or not there is an association between academic performance and involvement in a romantic relationship amongst high school students. The variables looked at were dating status (single or involved), level of involvement in the relationship, and grade point average. Variables were calculated on a survey measuring relationship and school satisfaction. Seventy-five high school students studying in St. Joseph College were surveyed. Approximately fifty-one percent of those surveyed were involved in a relationship. The relationship assumed between grade point average and dating status were not supported by the data. However, students involved in a relationship experienced more stress when facing deadlines for school. The data has not revealed any clear correlation in the study between dating status and academic performance, though hopefully further research in this idea will prove beneficial Teen relationships are common in today's world. Let Him Have It

...Walker cites the National Academy of Sciences stating that rehabilitation is “any planned intervention that reduces an offender’s further criminal activity (Walker 251).” Walker breaks down rehabilitation models into two groups, the new and the old groups. The new groups that Walker suggests may have some positive hope are reentry programs, and drug courts. The old groups include probation, parole, and other reintegration programs. Worrall has a similar definition of rehabilitation, stating that “rehabilitation consist of a planned intervention intended to change behavior (Worrall 40). He similarly assesses several of these programs and reaches similar conclusions as Walker. Drug courts are specialized courts that focus on substance abuse. Generally offenders are offered the chance at skipping prison or jail sentences if they successfully complete a substance abuse treatment program (Walker 275). Walker assesses drug courts, when they are well managed and designed carefully, as being promising as possibly lowering recidivism (Walker 277). Worrall reached similar conclusions, stating that while much of the research into the effectiveness of drug courts has suffered from design limitations, they have shown reductions in recidivism (Worrall 168). Reentry programs try and take a fresh look at sending prisoners back into society after revamped educational and counseling programs (Walker 363). Unfortunately there is not a lot of evidence that these programs reduce recidivism rates...

I Forgave Him

...Aaliyah Stamps November 1, 2015 Professor Hinckley Engl 113 I Forgave Him Past... I always thought that a littles girl’s first love, crush, superhero, and leader; was her father. In this case, my step- dad filled in the void, but the longing to have my biological dad in the picture was definite. I felt a gut wrenching pain every time I thought about this man. A pain so strong, only the love from him could take that pain away. He loved me with a string attached. Every time he walked away and disappeared for years, he snatched a piece of my heart way with him. Being so young, timid, and naïve; I knew no better. I was just thinking maybe he was just busy, but no one is ever too busy for their children. My father built up my spirits in him, only to let them crumble. He raised me to dislike him unintentionally, but my heart is too big. I always gave him the benefit of the doubt. The day he married, was the last day I settled for his lies and betrayal. He married the Wicked Witch of the West, Cruella, but left his innocent kids to fade away in the memories of his irresponsibleness. Mid-Past… I am a senior in high school now, an impeccable straight “A” student, captain of two teams, and a state powerlifting champ. Everyone thought I had the world held high over my shoulders, when in fact the world was sitting my chest suffocating me, trying to swallow me whole. I focused all of my energy into my academics and extracurricular activities, just so I would focus on any issues...

A Soul Inspired by Him

...A SOUL INSPIRED BY HIM We are born to be an instrument of change or an instrument of destruction. Many are born with inherent audacity and many are born with a lack of it. Many possess certain characteristics that are distinct while others don’t have; but I believe that every individual has hidden uniqueness that lies within them. They only need a rope to show in order to outstand. Life was never been a smooth sail and the road is not flat but rough and it is the way of life. Many of us surrendered, but many surpassed due to resiliency. I was once a slave of my past, a void soul. Prisoned by memory which inflicts agony to my entire being. Shattered, and doesn’t know how to pick up the broken pieces of my life. One significant event in a gloomy day, that a bewildered soul is a total mystery. A voice and an obscure image appear with strong conviction, leaving words that were almost a melody to be heard help me change my life and my perspective, an apparition of Him that inspired a void soul, with so much love and compassion. A life is worth living, not a life to sulk over the memories of past. The world is indeed cruel but I learned to see the optimistic side of it. I learned to see the world behind the prison cell I created. I have faith that one day, every rough place will be made plain, and crooked place will be made straight. If we listen and restore faith in Him, no soul is in agony, if we believe in His existence and power...
