Reconstruction and The New South

1. Columbian historian Eric Foner (1983) quotes W. E. B. DuBois in calling Reconstruction a “splendid failure (p. 16).” After studying the events of the late 19th century, defend whether or not you agree with his position. What are the long-term implication?

“A Splendid Failure”, a statement made by the African American Historian. W.E.B. Du Bois has been used to describe what some see as the best way to describe the results of the Reconstruction Era. So the question one has to ask is if this remark is actually true. Was Reconstruction a 100% failure or where there some success that came out of this time period in American History? I would say that it was neither, that in fact there were some success and there were some failures.
The best way to describe my point is to use what the Military calls and After Action Report and see what these success and failures were. In looking at success of the Radical Reconstruction period the first one that stands out is in fact some say the reason the United States split and ended up in the bloody Civil War. That being the fact that Slavery was abolished. It was now once and for all illegal for a person to own another person as property. Schools for blacks were being created that had not existed before. Schools such as Salem University which was founded in Mississippi in 1872 would not have existed had access to education not been possible. Finally, services and facilities that had not existed before the war, in fact now existed. The quality and in most case the sanitary conditions that Whites enjoyed were none existent for Blacks and would remain that way until late into the next century, they did in fact exists.
On the other hand, promises that were made by the Radical Republicans and

Defining Diversity

...Defining Diversity Defining Diversity * To me, diversity encompasses a wide range of elements in which to classify a student population. It includes the obvious such as race/ethnicity, culture, gender, disabilities, and socio-economic status. However, diversity goes so much deeper. Diversity also includes the various cognitive levels in students, the different styles in which they learn, and the various levels of motivation in students. Each of these diversity categories can be evidenced in an educational setting. The impact it has on a school can be positive if it is approached and handled appropriately by the school and its’ teachers. If it is not, it can have very negative effects on the school and the student. Having low expectations and showing bias toward one diverse group over another can have a very negative and lasting impact. It is important to acknowledge that ALL students can achieve if given the motivation and encouragement to do so. According to Janine Bempechat, high achievers in all ethnic groups believed that success was die to hard work. She concluded, “Teachers need to help low achievers understand that poor performance does not result from a lack of ability as much as from lack of trying” (Nieto & Bode, 2008). It is for this reason that it is of utmost importance that teachers convey positive messages to their students. Building self-esteem can be the first step in academic achievement. If students do not believe they have the ability...

He called into question some of the basic tenets of Roman Catholicism. Martin Luther nailed a sheet of paper with 95 theses on the university’s chapel door. His followers soon split from the Roman Catholic Church to begin the Protestant tradition. 5. The pope does not intend to remit, and cannot remit any penalties other than those which he has imposed either by his own authority or by that of the Canons.6. The pope cannot remit any guilt, except by declaring that it has been remitted by God and by assenting to God's remission; though, to be sure, he may grant remission in cases reserved to his judgment. If his right to grant remission in such cases were despised, the guilt would remain entirely unforgiven. Historical Context of the Illustration: In 1517, Pope Leo X announced a new round of indulgences to help build St. Peter’s Basilica. Sweat Galore

...ANSWERS 1. Do you think it was important for Michael to stipulate that he wanted a business that he would enjoy, that would give back to the community, that would grow and be more successful every year, and that would generate a net income of $25,000 annually? Why or why not? It's always important to set goals to measure the success of any business. However, the first three goals are more of a mission statement while the fourth is an objective for the company. The problem is there no plan and one objective. What is he going to do if the company doesn't net the $25,000? Or what if it nets the $25,000 but there is not enough cash to sustain the business? There need to be more objectives to make allowances for these types of situations. There needs to be a plan of action where goals change from period to period. Otherwise, the business cannot succeed. 2. If Michael has sales of $12,000 during January of his first year of business, determine the amount of variable and fixed costs associated with utilities and maintenance using the high-low method for each. Hi-Lo Maintenance | Units | Cost | September | 8,000 | $1,914.00 | January | 2,000 | $1,716.00 | Difference | 6,000 | $198.00 | Cost/unit | | $0.03 | | | | | | | Hi-Lo Utilities | Units | Cost | September | 8,000 | $1,400.00 | January | 2000 | $1,100.00 | Difference | 6,000 | $300.00 | Cost/Unit | | $0.05 | | | | January Sales | 12000 | | January /unit...

There were several concerns about the American soldiers, and whether or not they would be able to handle the Germen troops. Many of these men were not only untrained, some were unarmed. Week 3 Eng 125 Individual Assignment

...The Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Reaction Paper- Fiction: Drama Sherryl Cascella September 1, 2014 ENG/125 Judy Williams The Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Reaction Paper- Fiction: Drama The Death of a Salesman tells the story of Willy Loman’s last day. The entire story addresses Willy’s inability to change or accept responsibility for the mistakes he made. He is unable to acknowledge that he is an average man in America living an average life. Even with the love and support from friends and loved ones, he still feels an immense amount of regret about decisions he made in the past and spends a large amount of time retreating into the past and reliving moments where he felt successful. The three themes within the play are denial, contradiction, and the desire to live the “American Dream” by being liked and successful. Denial is portrayed in many of the characters. Willy is in denial about the amount of success he has achieved as a salesman. He is unable to accept the fact that he is nothing but a mediocre salesman and even has to take out a loan from his friend in order to pay his bills. Later in the story Happy begins to display some of the very same characteristics that Willy does. He is seen to exaggerate his job position in order to appear more successful than he is, leading to a fight with Biff. Willy makes several statements about how “easy” it is to live the American Dream and even makes the statement “Certain men just don’t get started till later...

Reaction Paper - Nonfiction

...Reaction Paper - Nonfiction ENG/125 - Literature in Society Reaction Paper - Nonfiction In class this week our discussion was about nonfiction and some differences from fiction. Google dictionary (n.d.) states “nonfiction is prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography and history.” For our assignment this week we were asked to select two of the five nonfiction texts from our week four readings. After thoughtful consideration, I have chosen to write my reaction paper about “On Going Home,” by Joan Didion and “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” by Andrew Lam. In any form of writing the reader can find various literary elements such as plot, character, setting, theme, and point of view. Also when a writer writes they have a purpose in mind. The writers purpose might be to inform, persuade, or entertain their readers. The writer may also want to describe something to the reader. In both “On Going Home,” by Joan Didion and “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” by Andrew Lam I consider the theme to be the main element of both essays. In “On Going Home”, Didion’s theme is that of belonging and family. In Didion’s text, she makes use of three of the four main purposes of writing. Didion’s very first sentence is informing the reader as to why she is going home. The sentence reads “I am home for my daughter’s first birthday.” (Barnet, Burto, & Cain, 2014, 20111, 2007, 2005, 2003, p. 636) Didion...

Final Project

...FINAL PROJECT: Chapter 1: Page: 23 Case Study: National Air Express 1. Is the productivity measure of shipments per day per truck still useful? Are there alternatives that might be effective? The productivity can be measured by the number of stops covered by each driver. I think measuring shipments per day per truck is still useful. It helps to keep on track with the amount of services that can be offer on every day basis and with the area covered by each driver. By doing that, the company can tell how many areas have been covered by a driver per day; therefore productivity can be assessed in measurable way. 2. What, if anything, can be done to reduce the daily variability in pickup call-ins? Can the driver be expected to be at several locations at once at 5pm? To reduce daily variability in pickup call-ins, the company should avoid call-ins during peak time; what I mean is that the company can offer to its customer’s deals to call at maybe nights when the network is not that busy so people for important calls only can use and benefit from the network. By offering deals to clients that call at night times the driver might be able to make to several place before peak time which is 5pm. This strategy can be apply in order to reduce the business during the day time so the driver can easily and correctly do their job. 3. How should package pickup performance be measured? Are standards useful in an environment that is affected by weather, traffic, and other random variables...
