After you've taken a brief cyber tour of Puerto Rico, read this article from the Economist regarding Puerto Rican statehood. What is your view on the issue of Puerto Rican statehood and self-rule?
Roberto Clemente lived from 1934-1972 was born August 18, 1934 in Carolina, a suburb of San Juan. He was recruited by the New York Giants into the National Baseball League. Most of the time he is known for playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates where he played from 1955-1977. Baseball is seen as a way out of Puerto Ricans so seeing Roberto Clemente who was one of baseball greatest player until his death in a plane crash trying to help people after an Earthquake in Puerto Rico.
Rita Moreno was born on December 11, 1931 in Humacao. She is most famous for being an actress in films such as West Side Story, The Muppet Show, and The Rockford Files. Rita became the first women ever to win all four biggest awards in show business: Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and Grammy. She influenced Puerto Ricans by letting them know that they, too, can have a career in movies and television.
Felisa Rincon de Gautier was born in 1897-1994 lived in Ceiba. She is most well-known for assisting in forming the Democratic Party in the 1930s. She was the first female mayor of San Juan and from 1946-1969 enormously popular for her children’s Christmas parties where she would make snow fly. In 1953, the League of American Women gave her its Woman of the Year Award.
Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. There have been some arguments that Puerto Rico should be the 51st United State. Puerto Rican’s have their own independent government and control of its internal affairs but they do not have total control of foreign affairs, trade and military. As a commonwealth, they do not have a vote in the United States Congress or for the President of the United States. I think that if they lost self-government

The Spanish, African and native Taino’s created a hybrid race which became Puerto Ricans. By the late 1800s Puerto Rico, along with Cuba, was on its way to becoming an independent country, but was side-tract by the Spanish-American War. Through the Treaty of Paris, the islands were given to the U.S. which invaded Puerto Rico in 1898, and enforced a military rule until 1900. The government was then ruled by American civilians until the islands officially became a colony in 1917.      With the new colony rule, American citizenship was imposed on the islanders along with the draft. The creation of the American colony allowed the U.S. to legally break apart the islands’ economy which it did successfully. By the 1940s the U.S. government implemented Operation Bootstrap, which promoted the illegal sterilization and guinea pig like usage of the Puerto Rican women and the attempt to Americanize the colony. “La Operacion” or the operation also included planned migrations from island to the continental U.S., especially into areas that required factory laborers, restaurant, hotel and other service jobs.   In 1952 in order to keep peace within the U.N., the international community and Puerto Rico, the U.S. renamed the relationship from colony to commonwealth or “Estado Libre Asociado” (literally translated to Free Associated State). Mexican Americans are very family oriented, and family is everything to them. (Conover, 1991). Mexican Americans is deeply religious and predominantly Roman Catholics. Many Mexican immigrants arrived to the United States with very little skills. Most of them usually are low income family and hold manufacturing, agricultural jobs.
