...Learning Chopsticks In Guanlong Cao's essay titled “Chopsticks”, an excerpt from a longer memoir entitled The Attic: Memoirs of a Chinese Landlord's Son, Cao recounts a tale from his automotive school days in Shanghai China of students crafting their own chopsticks. Cao tells us about how the students made their chopsticks and the clandestine maneuvers required to obtain the raw materials. Some of the students went to great lengths to carve very elaborate chopsticks that were sometimes used to acquire a boyfriend or girlfriend. This is an enjoyable essay that not only illustrates a footnote in Chinese history between the 1950's and 1970's, but also brings some humor and a sense of irony to what many westerners may consider a dark time for a little understood country. Cao begins by telling us about his four years spent at an automotive manufacturing school in Shanghai, China. The conditions at the school were harsh. Meals were scarce. So scarce, in fact, that the administrators encouraged more sedate pass times such as chess and cards so that the students would not use up the precious few calories they gained from the food (Cao 109). The narrator shares with the reader her intimate relationship with her favourite bench at the park, conversations she has had with strangers on the bench, as well as personal memories and opinions. The essay revolves around the narrator, her pregnancy, and her intimacy with the specific bench at the park. Fedler created the narrator as an extreme pessimist, not viewing things very positively or in a nice manner. The narrator grew up with a rough childhood – often believing her mother would exchange her for opulent desires, and not knowing whom her own father is. Another hint that the narrator grew up without luxuries, is that she was once a shoplifter. Children and adolescents that are normally caught stealing, are taking it because they can not afford to pay for it – and when the narrator’s bail turned out to be only $500, her mother would not pay for it. I, hope to, have gained much more of a grasp of the ideas used to write a simple essay breaking down the movie posters using context, form, content, and function. The most important part is the thesis though, and that was relatively simple. The political significance of these movie posters is the name. A large number of people do not watch the political debates, or the news, or try and keep up with the presidential election, so seeing a bumper sticker with “Romney/Ryan 2012” could be the sole factor of swaying an undecided voter. The context of the “Expendables 2” poster seems to be pretty straightforward to me, the majority of the characters from the first movie are back to act in the second, but in this one there are new additions to the lineup. Those additions include guys like Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme, whom we do not know if there are good guys or the scum of the earth to be eventually destroyed by the aging action heroes. One system consisted of laws to protect certain rights for laborers, while another system provided no protection from the law to protect laborer’s rights because they were simply considered a piece of property. This brief essay explains the differences between an indentured servant and a slave. In addition, readers will learn when and why masters began to choose slaves over indentured servants. Indentured Servants In 1607, the Virginia Company of London landed and settled in Jamestown. Early settlers realized they had an abundant amount of land to care for; however, there was no one to tend to the land. The Virginia Company developed a system known as the indentured servitude that would attract workers needed for cheap labor and a decade later, the first indentured servants arrived in America ("History Detectives Special Investigations", 2011).
