According to Ferry, what recent developments in world trade have made it urgent for France to have colonies?
Ferry in my opinion was hitting on multiple reasons as to why it was important to have colonies for France. One of those reasons are as stated in his passage, the competition of rising rivals through military, navel improvement, and prodigious development. I believe that Ferry was very smart for thinking of these three things because the first was military, and with military comes easier expansion throughout foreign grounds. The military is also very important because it allows you to be able to protect your native land as well. Second, was the naval development this was extremely important better more durable ships can last longer at sea and make vaster journeys. A more militarized ship also meant being able to protect whatever goods or people the ship was carrying. Setting up colonies for these things could make for safer travels and the ability to refuel and be able to port in a safe area. Safety was a big issue in this as well as at the time Germany was starting to set up water blockades not letting foreigners use what they considered their part of the ocean making trade and travel even more difficult. With the competition of supply and demand it became more and more apparent that the European countries were not the only ones in the market anymore with the North American trade taking over lots of parts of South America. Ferry’s answer to this colonize different parts of the globe. He was thinking with expansion comes power money and trade routes which were the biggest source of income.
What arguments against imperialism have been raised by Ferry's critics? How does he counter them?
The critics had a lot to say about imperialism. In the article I read about the making of the Anti-Imperialist League founded by Andrew Carnegie and William James there was a quote stating “We believe that imperialism was hostile to liberty and leans towards militarism”

Case Study-Promiscuity

...Promiscuity- A Self-Destructive Behavior in Correlation with a Lack of Paternal Authority: A Single Case Study Rebecca M Bauman 2015 MAR LIB-495-GS001 Abstract Paternal authority, according to the existing literature, is of upmost importance to the healthy psychosexual development of a child. Women who were raised with a lack of paternal authority can often face significant setbacks when dealing with everyday life issues. Promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior has substantial consequences often resulting in mental and physical suffering. This qualitative single case study was designed to explore the correlation of promiscuity- as a self-destructive behavior with women who were raised in single-mother households where there was a lack of paternal authority. A single intrinsic case study was used to explore one woman’s battle with promiscuity. The data obtained formed a narrative generated by the triangulation of psychoanalytical therapy sessions, a client intake form and the woman’s journal. A case analysis was performed and later reviewed by an attending mental health clinician. The results indicated the woman manifests the self-destructive behavior of promiscuity at the expense of poor self-esteem which directly correlates with a lack of paternal authority. The disruption of the woman’s psychosexual development in childhood negatively altered her self-image. The woman uses transference in her intimate relationships as a desperate attempt to gain control of her...

Case for Case Studies

...A Case for Case Studies Margo A. Ihde Liberty University Author Note Correspondence concerning this article should be addressed to Margo A. Ihde, Psychology 255-B05, Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va. 24515. E-mail: mihde@liberty.edu A Case for Case Studies Case Studies are utilized across many disciplines including but not limited to medical science, political science, social science and psychology. There is however some confusion as it relates to the use of case studies. The first such confusion that must be clarified is what the definition of a case study is and what constitutes a case study. The second clarification is to identify the reasons for using a case study. A third area is outlining the advantages and disadvantages of using a case study. Lastly, when a researcher concludes a case study would be the best option they then must determine where and in what ways would the data and information be sourced. Identifying the answers for these four areas is imperative to understanding and utilizing a case study. Case Study – Defined The definition for a case study within all many disciplines is very similar. A case study is usually described as an investigation into a real situation involving an individual, a group, an organization, or a society focusing on a single subject or object (Pegram, 2000). To begin, identifying a case studies purpose would contribute to determining what would and should be investigated. The study could focus on the “history...

Malmi

...In this research note we will discuss strengths and weaknesses in the design of this study, and propose ways to deal with the weaknesses in a follow-up study. We will address two themes; generalizability and reliability/validity. Generalizability Generalizability theory is mainly used as a tool to conceptualize and design reliable data. (Brennan 2001) If we want to operationalize generalizability than generalizability would be an extension of your conclusions from for example a small survey to a much larger population. Applying this on case studies, Mills, Durepos and Wiebe (2010) say generalizability refers to the ability of extending the validity of one's case study conclusions to other cases of the kind. In his paper, Malmi actually uses the term theoretical generalization and defines it as the explanations generated from this and other case studies that will help ABC failure as a phenomenon to become understandable. In order to achieve this, Malmi explicitly illustrates the different interests of organizational stakeholders, different purposes for the use of ABC and describes political, economic and cultural influences on ABC implementation. Due to the multiple factors affecting ABC implementation, Malmi described ABC failure in a broad context such that his conclusion is easier transferable to other organizations. Reliability and validity In the context of quantitative studies, reliability can be defined as the extent to which evidence is independent of the person...

Case Study Definition

...encyclopedic tone used on Wikipedia. (January 2012) In the social sciences and life sciences, a case study (or case report) is a descriptive, exploratory or explanatory analysis of a person, group or event. An explanatory case study is used to explore causation in order to find underlying principles.[1][2] Case studies may be prospective (in which criteria are established and cases fitting the criteria are included as they become available) or retrospective (in which criteria are established for selecting cases from historical records for inclusion in the study). Thomas[3] offers the following definition of case study: "Case studies are analyses of persons, events, decisions, periods, projects, policies, institutions, or other systems that are studied holistically by one or more methods. The case that is the subject of the inquiry will be an instance of a class of phenomena that provides an analytical frame — an object — within which the study is conducted and which the case illuminates and explicates." Another suggestion is that case study should be defined as a research strategy, an empirical inquiry that investigates a phenomenon within its real-life context. Case study research can mean single and multiple case studies, can include quantitative evidence, relies on multiple sources of evidence, and benefits from the prior development of theoretical propositions. Case studies should not be confused with qualitative research and they can be based on any mix of quantitative...

Ibm Transformation and Growth

...INFO 410 Case Studies 1-2 Handout General Instructions Case studies are to be performed as described in the syllabus and in the Chapter 1 lecture notes. The questions provided here are NOT designed to be comprehensive steps, just some of the points I’d expect you to address while doing the case studies. So please go beyond the issues identified here; these are just help to get you started. 1. Case Study I-1 IBM’s Decade of Transformation: Turnaround to Growth (starts on page 5) This case study addresses several problems over the history of IBM, so it’s more like a series of little case studies. Focus your attention on the state of IBM when Louis Gerstner took over in April 1993, and address how he could have proceeded from that point. Of course the actual answer is the creation of One IBM, but what other options could he have pursued? Only use the exhibit data through 1994, and you can ignore the discussion of EBOs and other events well after 1994. Since IBM is both a user of IT, as well as an innovator and creator of IT equipment, they have an unusual position compared to many organizations. Focus on the problems IBM faced during this time and the alternatives they faced for dealing with the problems. What is the origin of the problem? Is it a technical issue, or customer relations, or competition, or something else? What functional areas within IBM were responsible for handling each problem (e.g. HR, accounting, marketing, engineering, etc.)? ...

...A Case Study by any Other Name Cathy Foster Liberty University   A Case Study by any other Name Researchers have different methods of observing their subjects. During a case study the individual is usually a person however that’s not always the situation. The case study can also be a setting, which can include a school, business, or neighborhood. A naturalistic observational study can sometimes be called a case study and these two studies can overlap (Cozby & Bates, 2012).
