History of Automobile Manufacturing I decided to write my research paper about the history of automobile manufacturing, since my grandfather worked for over 30 years for General Motors, the most successful automobile manufacturers in the world. I hope to show how the manufacturing of automobiles began and how much it has changed over the last one hundred and twenty years. Exactly who invented the automobile is not known. Many engineers in many different countries were working on inventing a more compact and convenient “mover” of people. In 1806, the first cars powered by internal combustion engines running on gas appeared. In the United States the early automobile was seen as a logical replacement for the farm buggy. Therefore, the first automobiles were born in a blacksmith’s shop. The first successful gasoline engine motor vehicles in the United States was designed by Charles E. Duryea and built by his brother Frank. It was drove on September 21, 1893. The Duryea Motor Wagon Company was established in 1895 to become the first American company to build gasoline-powered automobiles. In 1896 the company built 13 cars. The first vehicle of the Duryea brother was named “Buggynaut”. It weighed about 700 pounds and had ball-bearing and rubber-wheeled tires. The earliest cars were painstakingly constructed by skilled and usually gifted engineers in the very modest workshops, often back-street garages. General purpose machines and techniques were used. A common way for cars to be constructed was for the cars to move through the middle of the workshop, while the workers and parts moved to the cars. The machines were grouped according to the type of machine it was; drilling machines in on section, brazing equipment in another, grinding machines somewhere else. All work in progress had to be dragged and pushed from one group of machines to…...

...What is electric car Electric car is an alternate fuel automobile that uses electricity instead of petrol or diesel. These automobiles have electric motors and controllers used for propulsion. These vehicles do not use the traditional or the common methods of propulsion like ICE (internal combustion engine). These cars are energy efficient and are capable of reducing city pollution because of the zero tail pipe emission. The functioning of the cars greatly depends on the quality of the battery used in the car. The poor battery may result into long hours of recharging and poor speed with poor acceleration. These cars are not practically suitable for long journey but can be a good transportation vehicle for everyday use and can be recharged overnight. Why electric car India has millions of people to house, power grids to expand and factories to fuel. They all involve hydrocarbons. How, then, is a developing economy to grow sustainably? One answer may lie in a small electric car. The advantages of electric cars are multiple and compelling. Instant torque for good initial acceleration, quiet operation, low local pollution, and ease of operation (Reva -a car with automatic gear shift)are among their many compelling virtues. The principal advantage for everyone in adopting electric cars is virtually eliminating urban air pollution. The civil advantages of electrics were recognized early. Thomas Edison created a pretty good nickel-iron battery a hundred years ago,......

The Automobile Industry

...I chose the automobile industry because I feel that it is one of the largest and most innovative industries. The automobile industry is forever growing and forever changing. The history of the automobile begins as early as 1769, with the creation of steam engine automobiles capable of human transport. In 1806, the first cars powered by an internal combustion engine running on fuel gas led to the modern gasoline- or petrol-fueled internal combustion engine. The early history of the automobile can be divided into a number of eras, based on the prevalent method of automotive propulsion during that time. Ferdinand Verbiest, a member of a Jesuit mission in China, built the first steam-powered vehicle around 1672. By 1784, William Murdoch had built a working model of a steam carriage in Redruth, and in 1801 Richard Trevithick was running a full-sized vehicle on the road in Camborne. In Russia in the 1780s, Ivan Kulibin started working on a human pedalled carriage with a steam engine. He finished working on it in 1791.The first automobile patent in the United States was granted to Oliver Evans in 1789. In 1805, Evans demonstrated his first successful self-propelled vehicle, which not only was the first automobile in the USA, but was also the first amphibious vehicle. His steam-powered vehicle was able to travel on the road, on land, and via a paddle wheel in the water. What some people define as the first "real" automobile was produced by Amédée Bollée in 1873, who built......

History of Automobile

...Fake Name Fake Class English 101 No Date Automobiles The first gas powered automobile was created by a man named Carl Benz. It was a one-cylinder two-stroke gas powered engine which ran for the first time on New Year’s Eve 1879. Compared to a steam engine vehicle, which was very uncomfortable for it’s passengers, this was very successful. Benz had so much commercial success with this engine that he was able to devote more time to his dream of creating a lightweight car powered by a gasoline engine, in which the chassis and engine formed a single unit. This was just the start of one of the greatest inventions of the 19th century. The automobile ended up being one of the most influential inventions of it’s time. One of the most common names you hear when researching the automobile is the name Henry Ford. He was an American that dominated the industry in the first half of the twentieth century. Henry Ford innovated mass-production techniques that became standard, with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler emerging as the “Big Three” auto companies by the 1920s. The original price of a Model T automobile was $850. Due to the application of the assembly line and interchangeable parts, cars were easier and cheaper to make. Within a few short years the price of a car was less than $300. The Model T sold 15 million units in the United States. This is what made personal automobility a reality. The production of automobiles made much more than just the units themselves. It was able...

Automobile Industry

...The automobile industry is a giant, serving both public and private sectors of the economy and consuming enumerable amounts of goods used in production, accounting for numerous additional jobs. The complexity of the industry has grown over the years along with the complexity of the products it produces. New means of advertising and other market strategies further complicate this already hugely intricate industry. On top of this, the industry continues to evolve on an almost yearly basis with the introduction of new “essential standard features” that one would not have even considered putting in a car five years earlier. Despite it’s relatively recent rapid growth in the past 100 years, the automobile industry, had a somewhat slower start. Once the industry was set in motion it unquestionably continued to grow and develop amazing machines that provide a great service to society and a great profit to its manufactures, but the first 130 years the automobile industry took to establish itself as an important part of the economy are just as important to fully understand the industry. The first self-propelled street vehicle was invented by the French engineer and mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot, in 1769. It was a military tractor used by the French army to haul artillery. It was destroyed later that same year in what is considered the first automobile accident; it crashed into a wall.2 The engine, like most of its time, was steam powered. Steam was the main source of......
