Vulnerable Populations

How would you describe a vulnerable population?
A vulnerable population is a group of people with certain characteristics that cause it to be at greater risk of having poor health. They include but are not limited to age, culture, disability, education, ethnicity, health insurance status, housing status, income, mental health, and race. According to Mary de Chesnay a vulnerable population can be defined “by virtue of their marginalized sociocultural status, their limited access to economic resources, or their personal characteristics such as age and gender.” Vulnerability is both an individual concept and a group concept.

What barriers may prevent these groups from obtaining needed services? In the reading assignment there is an example of Samoan elderly in the United States trying to remember the old remedies for treating ailments. Thus isolating them from current treatment and possibly causing more harm by remembering wrong.

What experiences have you had with vulnerable groups in your own life? I volunteer with Remote Area Medical, RAMUSA. I have been to Guyana and traveled to the Rupunini where the villages are very remote. Three days by canoe between some villages. Although the people in these villages appear very happy they do lack in basic health care such as dentistry or emergency medical attention. Although the Rupunini region missed the industrial revolution as we consider world population the same issues occur here in the United States as well. That is why RAM has instituted clinics stateside. I have also volunteered at the Coalition for the Homeless with their food drives and holiday meals. Many of the people are in an unfortunate point in their lives. The assistance they need may be only temporary but very

...Taipei, and National Taichung Nursing College, Taichung, Taiwan wDepartment of Information and Computed Education, National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan Abstract This paper reports our implementation of a handheld wireless environment to support Jigsaw cooperative learning activities in a college setting. A quasi-experimental research design was conducted to investigate the effects of using handhelds, as well as issues associated with the use of handheld technology. Two intact classes of fourth-year students from a five-year junior nursing college participated in the experiment. Our findings showed that handheld tools enhanced both students’ attitudes and performance in learning, and promoted better interactions among students and instructors. We also found that the handheld technology was not sophisticated enough to support cooperative learning goals without full support from a technology specialist. collaboration, empirical, handhelds, ICT use, nursing, post-secondary. Keywords Introduction With recent advances in wireless communication technology and mobile devices, the application of handheld technology in education is expected to increase. Aging and Disability Worksheet

...Aging and Disability Worksheet Identify 2 or 3 issues faced by the aging population. 1. Unequal treatment in employment - Poverty 2. Face prejudice and discrimination - Ageism 3. Face isolation – Elderly Abuse * What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society? Ageism is the practice of prejudice of discrimination to the elderly. The way that ageism influences the presence of diversity in society is by robbing them of their choices, independence and treating them with disrespect. Also by treating them as if they are unable to handle things for themselves as if they have reverted back to an infantile stage. It should be noted that the elderly have a lot of knowledge and wisdom to bring to the table and are able to do the same if not more than society gives them credit for. Society also views elderly people as sickly, frail and unable to take care of themselves. * What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)? How does the ADA address issues for the aging population? The ADA is a civil rights law that was enacted in 1990 and that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. This law addresses the issues for the aging population by protecting anyone that is 40+ from being fired or from employment discrimination. It is designed to protect the aging and/or elderly from being passed over for a promotion or raise, however, it is difficult. This law does in fact protect against being fired...
