Have you ever come across a story you simply can’t put down or a story that bores you to sleep? There is a reason some stories keep you interested, while some do not. The story “Hit and Run” by John D. MacDonald is about a detective, Walter Post. Post solved the case of a mysterious hit and run car accident that occurred on Harding Avenue. After searching for a while, he found a suspect. He later discovered the real criminal was the mechanic that was fixing the car for the suspected family. MacDonald uses the literary techniques of flashback, suspense, and an ironic surprise ending to maintain reader interest.
The first technique that MacDonald used was flashback. Jon MacDonald cues the flashback by stating, “The killing had occurred on a rainy Tuesday morning in September at 9:30, in the 1200 block of Harding Avenue”. This quote is just one of the few flashback examples used in this story. Throughout the story, the narrator uses the flashback technique to describe what, where, and when the accident happened. These flashbacks set up the structure of the story. They can also hint what will happen throughout the writing. These flashbacks give specific details of conditions prior to the event too. In this story, details include the date of the accident, information on Harding Avenue, and prior complaints of Harding Avenue being dangerous. …show more content…
To build suspense, MacDonald stated, “And he knew there would be no joy in solving the case because he would find at the end of his search not some monster, some symbol of evil, but merely another victim, a trembling human animal”. MacDonald made you wonder what kind of person the criminal would be. He used this example to show that at the end of the story, there will be a person just as scared as the victim. A victim that had got in an accident and ran away in fear. This is a great example of suspense because it does not give the ending away, but hints how it the short story may

Nuclear Tube Assembly Room Case

...Charles MacLean September 11, 2013 WGB-600 Case Analysis: The Nuclear Tube Room Assembly Introduction Harvard Business Review case, The Nuclear Tube Assembly Room, is an excellent example of how managing and leading a team effectively can make a substantial difference in terms of results and goals achieved, all the while creating new ambitious expectations for workers. This particular case revolves around Ralph Langley, general foreman of the process department at American Radiotronics Corporation. Within the first 24 months of being promoted to general foreman, Langley has swiftly changed the mentality and efficiency of the workers in the nuclear tube assembly room. He has changed their terrible reputation into one of the most successful units in the department. Langley’s combination of leadership skills and interpersonal skills has identified him as the reason for the recent change. His strong abilities to manage people demonstrate the same abilities shown in Quinn’s Competing Values Model. Throughout this case analysis I plan to examine Langley’s managerial skills based on Quinn’s model. Quinn’s Competing Values Framework To be able to demonstrate and categorize where Langley fits on Quinn’s competing value framework model we must first understand his model. Quinn’s competing value framework is divided in four models; Human relations model, Open systems model, Rational Goal Model, and Internal Process Model. With each of the models comes along with it two managerial...

Iep Behavior Essay

...The purpose of this paper is to provide information for practitioners using observation for special education evaluations, including initial and re-evaluations, functional behavioral assessments (FBA), and monitoring IEP (Individualized Education Program) and BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan) progress. Observational procedures for research purposes are often more demanding and these suggestions are for practitioners and not meant to meet a research standard. Collecting data involves a variety of techniques, including both direct and indirect methods. Examples of indirect data collection include interviews, record review, and examination of permanent work products. This booklet focuses on observational data, which is a direct method of data collection. When collecting information, it is important to use multiple sources and methods, and to triangulate the data collected. No one method stands alone. Behavior always occurs in a context, and observing in that context is critical for defining and understanding the behavior. Observations may also help to identify the antecedents (what happens before the target behavior) and consequences (what happens after the target behavior) so that meaningful behavioral interventions can be developed. The data we collect during systematic classroom observations is used as a baseline, and/or present level of performance for an IEP. We might also use the data to evaluate whether or not an intervention is working. Observation is one...

Criterion has two complementary applications: E-rater®, an automated essay scoring system and Critique Writing Analysis Tools, a suite of programs that detect errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics, that identify discourse elements in the essay, and that recognize elements of undesirable style. These evaluation capabilities provide students with feedback that is specific to their writing in order to help them improve their writing skills. Both applications employ natural language processing and machine learning techniques. All of these capabilities outperform baseline algorithms, and some of the tools agree with human judges as often as two judges agree with each other. 2. Application Description Criterion contains two complementary applications that are based on natural language processing (NLP) methods. The scoring application, e-rater®, extracts...

Walter Long

...Walter Long The Nuclear Tube Assembly Room was a production unit of the American Radiatronics Co., a leader in the nuclear electronics industry. The company's regular line of electronic tubes was assembled, tested, and prepared for shipment in the nuclear tube assembly room. Walter Long, general foreman of the process department, described the tube room group as the most successful. Exhibit 1 is a partial organization chart. Prior to Long's assuming the leadership of the department some 24 months earlier, the workers in the room had acquired the reputation of being agitators, persistent troublemakers. Production was down, costs were out of hand, and deliveries became very unpredictable. Some thought was given to eliminating the entire operation. A report prepared by the director of industrial relations at the time, which described the existing problem, is presented in Ex. 2. Over the past 24 months the story is quite different. During the most recent three-month period the tube room's direct and allocated monthly costs averaged $60,350, while the actual sales value of the room's monthly production for the same three months averaged $175,800. Indirect costs were allocated to the department at a rate 425% of direct labor costs. A special management report presented some additional figures of interest. Between January of the previous year and March of the present year, the group had shown a 53% improvement in the dollar output of product per man-hour of work, direct labor efficiency...

Initially, the company offered its subscribers a low price, single monthly plan, consisting of both the unlimited Internet video streaming service and a DVD-mail-in service. Subscribers could “watch TV shows and movies anytime, anywhere.” In July 2011, Netflix eliminated the combined plan and separated the two services into their own monthly plans. If subscribers wanted to continue receiving both services, they were obliged to sign up for both the services separately, Consequently, the resulting price increase of the new “combined” plan significantly increased subscription cancellations...
