Nathanial Hawthorne uses imagery of things such as heat, fire and burning to imitate the Puritan’s beliefs of harsh punishment being used on those who have sinned and done wrong. Throughout the beginning of Nathanial Hawthorne’s novel “The Scarlet Letter” he uses the burning imagery associated with the letter ‘A’ when the narrator of the novel first comes across it. As the narrator holds the letter A to his breast he “experiences sensations... Of burning heat” which perhaps portrays how the letter is used as a form of punishment and which is therefore why one can associate it with heat and fire and burning images. This demonstrates how strong god’s anger was towards Hester Prynne meaning that the letter still burns other people who come across it and pick it up... not just the sinner themself .This can relate to Edward’s Sermon as he says that gods anger “burns like fire” One could read this as a supernatural reading, this letter clearly has an almost magical feel to it in the sense that the effect of it still remains , and will continue too. This is very similar to Rev. Edward’s sermon as he says that god’s wrath “burns like fire” towards you.

The women of Salem see Hester’s crime as so awful and terrible that she should have a “brand of a hot iron” on her head. This shows us as the reader that even though Hester is the same gender as them, they have no sympathy or helpful comments to make. It also shows how strong their puritan views and how they felt no commiseration to those who have done wrong. Edward’s sermon shows why the puritan faith is so harsh as he expresses how badly god will punish those who do wrong. This consequently causes everyone to be terrified to do wrong and therefore they feel no sympathy, as they know that if they were to do something sinful the rest of the puritan society would treat them in the same way. “It is nothing but his hand that

Sql Server and Fragmentation

...SQL Server and fragmentation Just wanted to share a quick tip on querying on sql server fragmentation and fixing things if needed. On our production server, which was setup by our sysadmin with all defaults as per configuration. I was also told that there is a weekly job setup for rebuilding indexes if there is a fragmentation. I did accepted everything told at a face value. But now its time for some treasure hunting. I had to do some sql BOL searching as it was not clear to me how/where I could find such stats. Finally came across sys.db_dm_index_physical_stats function which needs several arguments and based on it it will return details about an object's fragmentation. Lets look at this function first. sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats ( DB_ID, OBJECT_ID, INDEX_ID, PARTITION_NO, MODE); Here db_id, and object_id can take  [ null | 0 | default ] as a value and all mean same. To narrow down the results, you need to supply actual value. Index_id could be [ null | -1 |  default ],  and all mean same, alternatively you can provide 0 if object is a heap, or actual id of an index if object is an index. Partition_no is the partition id of index or heap. Alternatively it can be one of [ null | 0 | default ] as a value and all mean same. Mode is a scan level used to gather the information. It can be any of [ default | null | limited | sampled | detailed ], where default (null ) is limited. So to begin with I took one of our biggest table and made the query...

...Journal Entry # 21 New learning’s This is now my twenty first journal entry since the begging of all this nonsense. Twenty one weeks of pure hell and it’s not getting any better now because it is now winter and I’m freezing my butt off. Many people that have been here are either now dead, from those damn Nazis, or in another concentration camp. I guess I now also have a new name to. I’ve talked about this before, but now I may have forgotten my name. No worries though because I can always look back. Hmmmm, let’s see here. There we go I have found it, thank god. My name was Joel Roth, but now it is 21JPR. Well isn’t that funny. I just now realized that this is my twenty first journal entry and 21 is in that new name of mine, how ironic. My nickname used to be Junior, so I tell every Jewish person to call me by that so at least I have some sort of variety here. Anyways, what I know now is that, from what I’ve heard from new people that come in, is that millions of my fellow people have been killed because of all these stupid things people believe in now. I do believe this myself but, I don’t know for sure that this is true. Another thing I hear about all the time is that everyone that I’ve seen taken away and never returns either go to a new concentration camp or they get murdered in these so called gas chambers. I do also believe that I’m at one of the main concentration camps and it’s called, Auschwitz. Well then, that’s all I have to say for tonight. I guess I’ll see you people...

Critical Thinking

...“Borrowed Time with a Prince” By: Rjad “I remember the days, when you’re here with me. Those laughter and tears we shared for years, hmmmm….” Do you remember those days? Those days when we’re together, sharing all the laughter and tears for how many years? How wonderful to remember isn’t it? We used to cheat everyone for us to win a game. We used to be a team in a debate against everyone. We used to be partners in a ballroom dance. You’re even used to scold me when I’m wrong with my dance steps, causing for me to step at your foot. And instead that I should be frightened, I used to laugh and make jokes on you until you were already yelling at me. But how come, you’re the first one between us who would say ‘sorry’ even though I was the one who had committed mistakes? You were so sweet to me, that all the people around us are teasing us. They used to say that we were a perfect couple. You used to play basketball with my dad. You used to be the one who would reason out to my mom when I need money for a requirement. We used to be together in making your report that everyone around would tease us of being a ‘love team’. We used to be together at lunch. Or even anywhere I go, you’re there to guard me, making me to feel that I am a princess having a handsome prince on my back who is ready for action when I’m in trouble. You used to be my ‘crying shoulder’ when I cry. You were always there when I need someone to comfort me. You were the one who encourages me when I’m down and lost...

Zita

...Zita Summary Ms. Francisco Reteche is a foreigner I bet, he went to Pauambang to teach and to heal his broken heart (just an analysis). During his class he was astonished by one of the students name.. Zita. Zita is the only daughter of Don Eliodoro, a tycoon in the place. Now I guess, logically, Zita is also the name of Mr. Reteche's lover whose identity was hidden by Mr. Rotor (The Author) And perhaps the complete essence was hidden too. What a mysterious concept about love...yet so beautiful. Zita is a short story about a girl who fell in love with her tutor. Let's just assume that this is Zita. Zita is a young girl, who's taught to act like a lady. A young lady that eventually fell in love with his teacher. In the earlier part of the story, the teacher was kind of "shocked" that the girl was named Zita, maybe because of the fact that she fell in love with another girl named Zita--- maybe the cause of his "gloominess." His teacher kept receiving letters enveloped in a blue envelope, and every time he opens it, he feels sad or he's acting strange. Maybe the letter came from his lover or a person that broke his heart. "Maybe"(just a wild guess because it wasn't mentioned in the story) she's also named as Zita. That's why he feels strange towards Zita. I think he likes Zita but he just couldn't admit it because he's trapped into a  certain sentiment. Maybe that's the reason why he decided to move for awhile and stay in Zita's place as a teacher. This guy is very serious especially...

Disastrous Dates

...DISASTROUS DATES There was this time I went out on a blind date. OK, not totally blind, because I'd met this guy on the Internet, and had sort of seen pictures. I thought it was a bit weird that when we were corresponding the guy kept on asking how tall I was, making a real big deal out of it. In one email he said he even got out a measuring tape to convert (I only knew in cm's and he only knew in feet). Well my question was answered when I arrived (a bit late) at the fancy restaurant he had booked for us - he was tiny. OK, not that I have a problem with short guys, but I'm short for a woman, and he wasn't much taller. That and the fact that the guy was old enough to be my grandfather - early 60's at least - I was in my early 20's. In emails prior to meeting up he'd said he was older, but didn't give out any specifics. I quite like older men, so it wasn't really something on the forefront of my mind, and I just assumed he'd be in the age category I had specified in my profile criteria. Well, let me just say this, there's older men and then there's just old. And this also has a lot to do with how much a guy looks after himself, his dress sense, his outlook on life etc. Well my question was answered when I arrived (a bit late) at the fancy restaurant he had booked for us - he was tiny. OK, not that I have a problem with short guys, but I'm short for a woman, and he wasn't much taller. Satire

...attempt to persuade an enormous crowd of his followers to think for themselves goes unnoticed as the crowd of unthinking followers is so devoted to their religion and cannot think for themselves. This sequence is an example of travesty, presenting a serious subject frivolously and reducing everything to its lowest level. The scene shows how the crowd was bound to follow Jesus and ended up not being able to think for themselves. When attempting to kidnap Pontius Pilate’s wife the Judean Peoples front run into another group, the Campaign for a Free Gailee and a fight breaks out between the two groups and Brian urges them to unite to fight against the common enemy. ALL: The Judean People's Front!!! Brian: NO, the Romans. ALL: Oh yeah, the Romans, hmmmm Then the fight continues until all but Brian are dead. This demonstrates the bickering in closely united political movements. This sarcasm pokes fun at how even a united group can dissolve in to chaos. While at Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, Brian and his mother leave and go to a stoning instead which satirises the non-violent message of Jesus. The man who is to die is guilty of saying that his supper “was good enough for Jehovah.” All the people at the stoning are actually women disguised as men with fake beards. All the women end up stoning the priest when he accidently says “Jehovah” This scene is an example of Jewish style humour and is not anti-sematic. Over thousands of years of harassment the Jews have realised that the most powerful...

"Happy Birthday, 1951" by Kurt Vonnegut

...Assignment B – ”Happy birthday, 1951” 1. Summary of ”Happy Birthday, 1951” “Happy Birthday, 1951”, is a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut, 2008, which begins in media res. The story is about a young boy and an old man, who is not the father of the boy. The boy was given to him as a baby, by a refugee woman. They have lived in the ruins, for 7 years, after a war and have survived by collecting things they could find or steal. One day soldiers find them and order some documents filled out. For this he needs the boy’s unknown birthdate. The boy selects a day, and becomes entitled to have a birthday and presents. The day away from the war becomes a day to a place the boy never has been before. At the trip he sees some soldiers and a tank witch the man does not like. 2. Characterize the boy and the old man There is not mentioned much about the two characters, we do not know their age, nationality, names or birthdays. What we know is they live by themselves, poor, in the ruins after a war. “… the old man and the boy had lived in the ruins for seven years without documents …” (l. 10-11). They survive on things they steal or dig out of the cellars of the ruins. “But the old man and the boy had found all three for the digging in the catacombs of cellars beneath the shattered city, for the filching at night.” (l. 12-14). The boy is...

Personal Responsibility

...| It Is My Responsibility To Be A College Success | What I Need To Do To Achieve Success As A College Student | | | There is a correlation between personal responsibility and college success because a student has to be willing to put forth the effort required to achieve a successful college career, develop relationships with instructors, and choose what type of success they want to have throughout their college profession. | When thinking about the phrase, personal responsibility, several different definitions come to my mind. It means taking accountability for my own welfare. Personal responsibility can signify that I am responsible for the choices that I make in my life. I can go on and on about different ways that this phrase can be interpreted. However, I think it would be best if I began by breaking down the phrase into two parts, and deciphering each word. Let us start with the word, personal. Merriam-Webster defines personal, in its adjective form, as “done in person without the intervention of another”. The word, responsibility means “the state at which one is held accountable for one’s conduct and obligations”. [ (Encyclopedia Britannica Company, 2012) ] If we were to take both of these definitions and combine them, you would get my definition of personal responsibility. A person demonstrates personal responsibility when s/he is liable for any actions that they perform, and any choices that they choose to make. This definition not only places responsibility...
