When Dr. Orr presented to us last week in Colloquium he provided multiple examples of how this war affected a large number of Indigenous groups of people. He did this in attempt to demonstrate that when you are given a complex topic to teach on such as the Cold War. It is essential to touch on all factors and all people that were affected by this war. As a social studies teacher, it is my job to show my students the facts surrounding fundamental events through World and U.S history. In an effort to demonstrate this he used the example of the Hmong ethnic group and the detrimental effects war had on these peoples. Just as Dr. Orr introduced the class to the Hmong ethnic group to have the students grow a better understand of the War. This war included many groups and effected many groups then we often don’t realize. The Hmong and the Montagnards are two groups of indigenous people that were utilized by the Americans to fight in the war. They both were left with nothing and discarded by the Americans once the war was over. As a teach is important to integrate these voices of indigenous people to effectively teacher students the importance of the war. As teacher, we have a job to do and that’s to make sure the students are introduced to a variety of topics and events. The Hmong and Montagnard were extremely important to the war effort, however we often are never introduced to these groups of people. Even though a majority of them after the war migrated to the United States, in an effort to make this topic a more real and relatable topic.
