Hold Me Tight Hold Me Tight, by Dr. Sue Johnson is a book that discusses the principles that are most successful in creating loving, strong relationships. Many of the ideas throughout this book are very similar to the ones that John Gottman writes about in his book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. She even mentions him a number of times in this book, referring to some of the ideas that he incorporates in his work. Johnson separates her book into three main sections; “A New Light on Love,” “Seven Transforming Conversations,” and “The Power of Hold Me Tight.” Each section focuses on a different area, but they all contribute to the main theme of the important things to remember in order to create a happy relationship. The first section, “A New Light on Love,” begins by describing the type of research and work that Johnson does. Johnson focuses on a certain type of therapy that she calls EFT; or, Emotionally Focused Therapy, a therapy based on studying the emotional moments that define a relationship (Johnson 5). Johnson strongly believes that romantic love is all about the attachment and emotional bonding within a relationship (6). The main thing that people look for while trying to find a suitable mate, is, although it is normally subconsciously, is someone that they can depend on. Everyone wants to find someone who they can share an emotional connection with, and someone that they can feel comfortable around. As opposed to Gottman, who says that there are many reasons for fights, both large and small, Johnson claims that the majority of fights are actually just protests over emotional disconnection (30). The emotional starvation that can result causes a “demand-withdraw pattern,” due to one partner feeling deprived and desperate to regain the feelings that they once were having (34). In Gottman’s book, he focuses on the main ways to dissolve

...Change I stood on the beach, toes gripping on to the rough crunchy sand looking at the rumbling waves crashing down on the gentle water. Bright sun rays shooting out the sun like an eclipse moon covering the sun. Walking in to the cold ankle deep water as it swishes with every step I take in to the endless pool of water where I will soon live. “Nothing left for me now” I think to my self. “What am I going to lose?”. Now the cold gentle water at my knees I stop turn my neck stretching it to look at the direction of the beach where there is no life to be seen. “This is where I belong” I think to my self knowing that my life will be more enjoyable here. No memories to look back on I take a few more steps where the water is now waist deep coming closer to home. My grey shirt going down to my waist touching the water making it dark grey. As I take off my shirt I feel the cold breeze passing through my chest. A few more steps into the water; I take off my black shorts, now, only standing in my black and blue, bonds underwear. I start taking more steps into my new home, the water becoming more aggressive as I walk in to the rough, pounding waves; water splashing up on my head as it crashes against my chest. I look at the fierce wave approaching, I suck in a large breath, drop into the water and swim against the force of the wave. Waiting under the water, cheeks filled with air. I release the air out, blowing silver bubbles to the surface of the water. I follow the...

Psychological Perspectives on Gender

...stereotypical feminine role. Acute social awareness, to the point of anxiety, is also a prominent and typically feminine trait I possess. As a believer in the idea that these roles we assume as humans are fluid, always changing with time, social context, our desires, and that such labels are more often than not used to negatively discriminate, I am reluctant to declare my allegiance to a named role in any sort of permanent way. My preference toward masculine clothing was shaped largely by my parents. As a child with no money or sense of fashion, what I wore was completely subject to what my parents bought for me. Although children's clothing is often unisex at young ages, there was an instance in which I wanted to wear something that girls wear. I had been Peter Pan for Halloween one year, wearing a costume that included green tights. I loved Peter Pan and the tights so much, I wore them for weeks after the holiday until they wore out. The pirate-vanquishing daredevil that is Peter Pan served as a model for my continual wearing of typically feminine clothing. However, once I wore...

My Dear Austin Research Paper

...My Dearest Austin, The rain drizzling all around us, the feel of the wind brushing against the yellow leaves and our jacket strings, I remember this day too well. It was one of the biggest turning points in my life. I had lost another person so close to me after that moment. Remember the day we decided to go our separate ways? It has killed me forever since. I was trying to hold back my tears for you, but the rain helped hide it. I never wanted to see you go. You're the best thing that has ever happened to me. I think back to that moment everyday, and it always becomes the clearer that I messed up. I needed you more than ever, and I just left. I'm so sorry, because I didn't realize that at that moment you needed me more than ever....

...currently hold a post-graduate degree from your institution pertaining to the same. The experience has kindled in me an urge to stay in this field and learn more about it. Therefore, I am presently applying for a Doctorate program in the same and plan to start fulltime in the fall. PROFESSIONAL GOALS While in the field, I realized that this is an area with diverse interests and acknowledge that there is still much to learn about the field. Specifically the key areas of interest to me include teacher education and reading disabilities. Disabilities limit the affected individuals to knowledge access, which is a right to everyone. I have noted this over four years of experience working with handicapped children. I intend to use the knowledge gained to help make the learning process easier and available to the handicapped. Teacher education is a key area that needs addressing, since they are ultimately responsible for imparting knowledge to the handicapped. Thus, I also plan to pursue a minor in the area. ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE I attained both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the same at your institution. Thus, I feel better placed to further my knowledge in the same at the same institution. I have gained vast experience, both locally and abroad. I acted as the Assessment coordinator for the United Nations based program in Zimbabwe for a year, which granted me access to data measuring the effects of reading difficulties and early intervention. Love

...LOVE (reposted) By Shoujo lovestory It really makes me wonder. Most have experienced this kind of feeling; loving someone. But it sure makes me wonder. What is love? Love is, when two people desire each other. Love is, when two people want to be together. Want to share every second; want to hold each other tight; just smile at each other and share this happiness. Or even the sadness, the burden. If two people want to give each other everything. Does it really matter whom we love? Why do rules forbid to love someone of your own blood, may it be brother, sister, cousin or parent? In fact, rules will always be able to hinder a relationship, but they'll never be able to fight feelings. Because the heart doesn't lie and can't be silenced. So then, why is society forcing us to shut up our feelings, to shut up this desire? Why are we not allowed to love someone so much older than ourself? Why are people who love someone of their own sex looked down upon? I wake up and I look at this boy I love. He's normal. My age, not connected to me by blood at all, not my gender, not even violent. I'm following all the rules there are to love in this world. But he still won't turn to look at me at all, won't love me back. I keep realizing that I wish I could wake up and be another person, peel off my skin to find someone else underneath. That's what love is. A coincidence. You can't tell your heart for just whom it should pound. It could be just anyone and you're just the prisoner of your...

Native American Immigrants

...Did you know that only two percent of the American population is Native American? So, where did the other ninety-eight percent come from? Of course; they migrated to America. In 2013, the immigrant population stood at more than 41.3 million. So why are immigrants so important to our country? Because without immigrants we wouldn’t have a population! People have been immigrating to the US as early as the 1600’s. And what are they doing? Seeking the freedom that our country has to offer, of course! Have a look at the illustration An Ocean Steamer Passing the Statue of Liberty: Scene on the Steerage Deck. It’s easy to draw the conclusion that the people aboard the ship are immigrants coming to the promised land of America. The Statue of Liberty...

Forbidden Journal

...do, I love to listen to Ed Sheeran’s song Drunk. He understands me! There are so many valuable quotes from the song which I feel really get my battle against Proctor in this entry. One of the first quotes I noticed was, “without you to hold I’ll be freezing”. As you will have known from my previous diary entries, I loved John Proctor. But, recently I’ve been yearning for him more than ever. Since he decided to reunite his affections for Elizabeth, I was driven into the cold because I had no-one to hold. Without John, I had no-one to live for. Further along in the song (and in entry 2), his fondness of his wife grew more and more, and his acknowledgement of me was wearing thin. I think Ed captured my feelings well when he expressed “Though I know you’ll never love me like you used to”. This song lyric also links in with entry 1 of my time in Salem. Lastly, this lyric from the song understood my perspective of John now, at the present time. “Open bottles of beer but never champagne”. I feel this quote relates to me because Ed is basically saying that by drinking beer instead of champagne, he is feeling quite low, cheap and perhaps unworthy of drinking such an expensive drink. I believe that the metaphor understands me because I think is saying that instead of playing it the safe, goody-goody way (champagne), I will play it the raw, disobeying way (beer). Overall, I believe that Ed completely gets me in his song Drunk. And I just can’t wait to see where the future...

Benefits for We

...for Me.” Unity among the issues covered in this book is clearly apparent and unity happens to be the theme for this chapter. This particular reading is critical in understanding the overall concept of the book as it elaborates on concepts introduced in earlier chapters. Marc and Craig begin by taking the simplest example of raising a few thousand dollars and move on to greater feats like raising over a billion dollars to help victims of natural disasters. The authors begin by describing a school in Toronto that has dozens of obstacles that it faces on a daily basis. Among those issues are racial tension, frequent violence and gang problems. The authors described this school as a type of school that was thought of as “needing help rather than giving it.” The authors describe how the student body was inspired by a speaker from Free the Children and ended up raising over $30,000 to help several causes in Africa. The authors then begin talking about the “tragedy of the commons” and truly begin hitting on their point of UNITY. Through several concise examples readers learn how working together for the greater good is much more effective than simply working alone. Continuing with the theme of unity, the authors talk about an issue that hits very close to home for me; family values. I have written extensively in prior assignments about my close relationship with my family and I’m very glad to see that Marc and Craig hold similar views on this issue. The whole philosophy of Me to We...
