Hinduism
Hinduism is seen as the world’s oldest and third largest religion. It is the main religion in India and it claims about 950 million followers.
Hinduism is like a flowing of energy. There is no identified founder or organized structure. It does not have a defined or stabled creed of beliefs. In Hinduism, you unite the worshipping of many gods into one divine reality. Hinduism in reality is not one religion, it is more a family of beliefs and it is specific to an individual and their family. Each family has a “Family God.” They make special offerings to their selected god on a selected day, they will wear new clothing, and they will decorate the path to their homes with a sacred symbol called a “rangoli.” Holi Festival

The religion follows scared scriptures called Vedas. They hold important information in regards to gods and worship. They cover the Vedic Period which was about 2000 to 500 BCE. The origins of the Vedas are unknown. The Vedas were originally passed down verbally until they were eventually put into written form. They mean “Knowledge and Sacred Lore.” They could be related to vision and wisdom. There are four basic Vedas, the Rig Veda (Hymn Knowledge), Yajur Veda (Ceremonial Knowledge), Sama Veda (Chant Knowledge), and Atharva Veda (knowledge from the teacher Atharva). The most important is the Rig Veda because it accounts for the origin of the universe.
The Hindus celebrate their religion in several different forms: * Participating in festivals * Chanting Vedas * Making prayers and offerings * Singing devotionals * Going on short pilgrimages * Praying to Mother Goddess for nine days

History of the holi festival
The Holi Festival is celebrated during Phalgun Purnima which comes in February end or early March. It has an ancient origin which celebrated the triumph of good versus evil. This festival closes any social bridge gap. It is known as one of the least religious holidays of Hinduism.
The Celebration begins with the lighting up of a bonfire on the eve of Holi where people sing and dance. On the day of Holi, you rub “gulal” and “abeer” on each other’s faces and cheer up saying, "bura na maano Holi hai!” It is a time to send blessings and love to those that are dear to you. It is known as the as the festival of colors or love.
It is primarily observed in India, Nepal, and other regions where there is significant population of Hindu people or people of Indian origin. It holds particular significance in the Braj region and outside of India it is observed by the minority such as Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Fiji and many others.
There are many legends and stories that surround the Holi festival. It was originally known as the festival of “Holika.” The meaning of the festival has changed over the years but it is said that it existed even before Christ. It was used as a special rite of passage for married women for the well-being and the happiness of their families.
There are various different significances to the Holi festival. It holds mythological, social, cultural, and biological significance to the Hindu people. On a Mythological level, it signifies the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap; as well as the legends of Radha and Krishna. There is also a legend of it being the celebration of the death of Ogress Pootana or the popular legend in Southern India of Lord Shiva and Kaamadeva.
Culturally, it reassures people in the power of truth as a moral. In this festival, ultimately good prevails over evil. It helps to teach good conduct and virtues. Socially, it brings society together. Everyone celebrates Holi, including non-Hindus and that strengthens the country as a whole to bring such a joyous and colorful festivity. Biologically, Holi does have significance. The time when Holi is celebrated is when our bodies tend to become lazier because of the change of season and because of that, having a festivity where you are awakening your body and getting up to dance and play helps get you ready for the Equinox. Also the burning of the log is of significance for the temperature change. As well as the dyes in the color that sink into the pores.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
In my “About the author,” I will speak of a close friend whom recently traveled to India in 2014 and explored their culture. She was my inspiration for this project. During her travels she was able to visit some of the most famous and beautiful places of India as well as celebrate the Holi Festival. She was able to send me a little portion of her own personal experience and thoughts of her trip: “For the Holi festival, I celebrated in the town of Udaipur. The night before the Holi festival, the entire town gathered at the square for a big concert. It was a mixture of tourists and native town people and it was so crowded, you could barely walk through anywhere. The concert was lively with music and different dancers performing. People (especially women) were encouraged to jump on stage to join the dancing. After the performances, a giant log was set up in the center of the square. The giant log represents the story of the Holi festival of Prahlad's escape from being set on fire by his stepmother. There were no safety precautions or any police controlling the crowd around the logs. I didn't understand what was going to happen so I tried to get close to the center of the square as possible. All the sudden, the giant log was set on fire and sparks were flying off, burning bystanders. The crowd became almost like a mosh pit as people pushed each other to back away. Fireworks started going off and the air became thick with smog and smoke. People continued to congregate; dance, and watch the bonfire and fireworks go off. The next morning was the actual Holi festival. My family and I were given color powder and taught to dip our hands into the bag of powder, pat people with powder and say “Happy Holi”. For the entire day, my family walked around the square, strangers approached us with smiles and hugs and colored powder. Throwing powder was strictly forbidden and considered rude. My family made our way through the crowd and entered the temple for a religious ceremony of singing and patting the statues with Holi powder. At the end of the festival, townspeople threw buckets of water at people and jumped into the lake to wash off.” -Dahlia Levine

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I was very interested more in the Holi festival and the culture in India then in the Hindu religion itself. The beauty of India itself is one that is very captivating. Everywhere you look in India, you are getting an eyeful of one of the most beautiful locations in the world. From the Taj Mahal to the Lotus temple, you will find some of the most beautiful sites and people in India. When you dig into the history and the meaning behind the clothing, henna, culture in India, you find yourself enveloped in its magic and wanting to learn more. From the rites of passages, the different rituals performed in ceremonies in a wedding, and simply just having a celebration. You find yourself entering an entire new world. A close friend of mine recently traveled to India, her pictures of her Holi festival experience is what first intrigued me to use it for this newsletter and to inform myself more into its meanings and legends. When I think of traveling and what I would do with if I had the ability to do so, I would not want to just go to a place where all I do is lay on a beach. Yes, it is fun to do at times but my main goal is to explore. I want to experience what I have never experienced, see what I have never seen, and live what I have never lived. I want to be able to learn about a culture, I want to submerge myself in a culture and do as they do because I want to become part of their world even if it is just for a few days. When I look at the Holi Festival, I see people embracing one another no matter who they are and showing love to one another and that spoke volumes to me.

The lovely flowers with their dazzling colors and the sweet songs of the cuckoo provide a charming background to Holi. Celebration of Holi The Holi celebrations begin on the last day of Phalgun. People collect sticks and straws lying in streets at a place. At night they gather at that place and set fire to the huge pile of sticks and straws. They sing songs to the accompaniment of drums. Impact of Festivals and Events on a Destination

...Impact of Festivals and Events on a Destination Introduction Events and festivals can be described as the most exciting and fastest growing industry related to leisure, business and travel. These special attractions have a purpose and objective, which in turn, have impacts on host communities, participants and other stakeholders who as Getz puts it, are “impacted” by the outcomes of events (1993). In recent decades, a substantial amount of research has been carried out to examine the impacts of tourism on a destination and, to a lesser extent, events and festivals. Through this work, both positive and negative impacts of events and festivals on a destination have been discovered. Indeed, it is the expected benefits of events, whether economic, social, political or environmental, that is the principal drive underpinning the support for and increasing popularity of events and festivals at the local, national and international scale. Getz also believes that “local and regional events, including business events and conferences can increase visitation and expenditure, reduce seasonality, revitalize the economy, encourage repeat visitation and heighten regional awareness. Added to this, events and festivals can also provide the stimulus for additional infrastructure development in the local area and building community pride” (1993). On the other hand, events almost inevitably incur cost or have negative consequences that, to a lesser or greater extent, serve to reduce one’s net benefit...
