Opportunity Cost Writing Assignment Environmental Economics Professor Eric Jamelske Joshua Pedro 2/3/16
When one thinks of the energy used on a regular basis across the United States, one would not necessarily think simple things such as turning off lights or turning down the heat would make any real difference. At least that is what I thought as a child, until my parents started always asking me to turn off the lights in rooms I was not in, or telling me not to take such long showers, and even telling me to throw on a sweatshirt if I was cold, instead of turning up the heat. It was through antics such as these that my parents tried their best to not only conserve money, (the opportunity cost of putting in a sweatshirt in hopes of putting more money back in their pockets was for sure a tradeoff they have always been seemingly willing to make), but also energy in general. Although I was not alive in 1970 when President Jimmy Carter proposed the nation saving energy together by turning down the heat, I can imagine that most likely part of the reason that my parents always seemed to be telling me to conserve energy was in part due to the fact that they were alive during that time. Now this interesting idea of no holiday lights is something that would appear to need greater discussion. This is what I intend to do, discuss three different areas when it comes to this proposal. Incentives, logistics, and alternatives. The first thing would be incentives. What, if any, are the people of the US receiving in return for their tradeoff of less energy usage in regards to holiday lighting? This ought to be one of the first questions that the White House should consider and test before asking such a great sacrifice from the people. Because many would argue that the mere fact that this tradition provides a great deal of lifted spirits and “well-wishing”, that it would be quite detrimental to all classes, from impoverished to the upper class. Thus one could argue that a major opportunity cost would be that of lessened “holiday spirit”. So are there any incentives, and if so, what are they? This last question also opens the door for the next major prep phase. What exactly are the logistics of such a thing actually happening? People love holiday lights. The incentive has to be quite large if the government is going to attempt to do away with holiday lights. It seems hard to believe that there would actually be enough people willing to give up their current amount of energy usage to save, (in regard to their personal bill/amount of energy used), which is not a lot. It could also be said that many people would be out of jobs if this indeed did take place, as holiday lights are major portions of many lightbulb companies revenue. Which then leads in to the next question. Are there alternatives? Already invented, or able to be created. It is my own personal opinion that weeks after such an idea was proposed there would be many companies that would already be producing much more energy efficient lights or have done something much more radical, such as inventing a whole new lightbulb all together. Therefore in this sense, an idea such as this might not be the worst of ideas as it may generate new ideas for energy efficiency or new inventions altogether. The other side of the alternatives question is that of this whole idea of saving energy in the first place. If the amount of energy saved if everyone in the nation shut off holiday lights and kept them off, was say, the letter x, are there any other areas that will have less impact that would still save that x amount of energy? If so, what are those areas? Will we as the public be given numerous areas that all save x amount of energy? Will we vote on this? Is this something that needs to be voted upon? These questions and many like them are all question that I believe the government must delve deeply into when considering purposing such an idea Thus it is with these questions on my mind that I neither support nor reject such an idea. Mainly because that’s all it is right now, an idea. Although important, it is simply an option amongst many and there definitely seems to be a need for these ideas to be thought out. I do however support this type of thought. As it is this type thinking that has kept America in the forefront of countries.

Auto Navigation Systems Are for Work

...Auto Navigation Systems are for Work, Play, and Everything in Between Back in the dark ages, it was nearly impossible to navigate the shark-infested waters of Main Street or big city USA without the assistance of a road map or some other major navigational aid. Back then if you found yourself lost you either had to stop and ask for directions at a convenience store along the way or drive along until you found a payphone you could use in order to call for better directions. This process became a little easier once cell phones became prominent and affordable to the masses. Today it has become even better if you can believe it. Gone are the days when you drove around in circles hoping to find a place to stop and get directions to take you back to the beaten path before your gas tank uses the last of its fumes. Now you can simply use GPS tracking to find out where you are and then get directions to the nearest destination of choice or simply find your way back towards your destination. You can actually go on vacation now without taking a massive road atlas or a half dozen maps of a half dozen states along for the ride. Gone are the days of needing a tour guide in order to fold your maps back into their former positions. Vacations are now much more relaxed as a result of the lack of stress involved in merely getting there. Not only is getting there easier with the use of auto navigation systems, but getting around once you reach your vacation destination is much easier to...

How I Spend My Summer Holidays

...Vacations are the best time to relax and enjoy and I eagerly wait for my summer vacations every year. Every year my school closes in the middle of the month of May and reopens by the end of June. Annual exams get over and the results are declared. This time I got promoted to class nine from class eight. After the hard labor for the examinations, I wanted some rest and also some refreshment. Hence I put aside my books for a few weeks. Next day morning I went out to play with my friends. It was a very hot and sunny day so we decided to play indoor games. In the evening I asked my father and mother to take me to any of the hill stations because I wanted to beat the heat. My father told me that we cannot go to a hill station because all the hotels and resorts are booked beforehand only. It was too hot, the sun was scorching and the wind was deliberating. Fortunately my uncle had invited my family to Haridwar where he had reached two weeks earlier. Me and my parents reached Haridwar. My uncle, my aunty and my cousins were all very excited to see all of us. They welcomed us with a warm heart. At Haridwar I went to the bank of River Ganga in the morning and it was very pleasant to see hundreds of men and women bathing in the stream of Ganga and then offering prayers in the different temples of its “Ghats”. I requested my uncle to take us to the hilly spots in the vicinity. He was kind enough to take all of us there. The hill sights of Laxmi jhoola, Swargashram and many...

It was great with attention from all the boys. I felt really special and hot. After a while, I got very sweaty, sow I went outside to get some fresh air. ...Bruna DaSilva ENG 071, Basic Writing Fall 2012 Compare and Contrast Essay Professor Arthur Harris People are always looking for their vacation time. There are many places to chose. The places people choose to take a vacation are the beaches and the mountains in my opinion. Both places can offer fun activities. The beach has activities the mountain cannot give, and the mountain has activities the beach do not. The mountain and the beach are very different. Climate is very important to enjoy any vacation. If someone does not like cold weather, she might have a hard time in the mountains. The cold climate in mountains is the first thing to enjoy it, and the climate also determines the type of activity it offers. Snow boarding, mountain climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and skiing are some activities that people can enjoy when they go to the mountains. There are many places that have mountains where people can go and have a great time. Canada is a country that has many mountains where people can go and have fun. Warm climate is one of the most important thing that the beach has. Sun and fun are two things that can describe the beach. The sea and the warm climate determine activities at the beach. Driving Vs Driving Research Paper

...Driving vs. Flying Imagine riding in a car with a best friend and her family to a vacation destination: the endless conversations about anything and everything, napping all day, and eating at new places every night. Also imagine soaring thousands of feet in the air, while relaxing and watching a movie either on a phone or on the back of the seat in front of you. Though there are similarities, the differences between flying and driving are striking. Both driving and flying to vacation have expenses. When looking at the costs for driving, there is the cost of gas, hotel rooms, food, and wear and tear on the car. I have gone on vacation with my closest friend and her family for many years. On all of the trips we have been on, we have driven to them all. On average, we stop for gas about one to two times a day and that alone can cost $50 each stop. Some people who go on vacation may drive straight to their destinations without stopping to rest at night. If not, the cost of the hotel rooms can add up quickly. If people decide to drive to their vacation destination, it may take a couple days, so there will be several more meals to pay for. While being on the road, one cannot have homecooked meals, so it forces people to eat out. All of these costs add up, therefore it gets expensive to drive to vacation destinations. On the other hand, flying to vacation can have its costs also. There is the cost of airfare, which can be very expensive. One person flying from Milwaukee...
