When asked to list things a person has regretted doing in their lifetime, majority would either mention things they have done to impress their crush five years ago, or the spiraling lies they have told to their parents yet failing miserably--basically things that would trigger a cringe attack. I, however, have near to no recollection of what I have regretted doing. I had no regrets. Instead, I had a big ball of regret called my existence. Like many, I pretty appreciative of what I’ve had when I was little. I had the picture-perfect family, a camaraderie of friends, and more than enough sustenance. My brother and I would always be greeted with a lively sense of energy when we came home after school. We must be stronger than we were before by building new shells and replacing old ones. There is absolutely no point for me to ponder over the mistakes in the past. Just like what Holmes said, “He left last year’s dwelling for the new, stole with soft step its shining archway through. Built up its idle door, stretched in his last-found home, and knew the old no more.” By leaving “last year’s dwelling for the new”, I was able to move on to keeping my parents proud and maintaining their promise, even until this day. Although I may still run into some obstacles and make mistakes, I always had the promise in my mind that I still keep today: by being grateful of their sacrifices they have done for me ever since the beginning of time. It became my responsibility to give appreciation to them at times where they still loved me despite my lies, betrayals, deception, and existence.
