School Choice: Public Education vs. Home School

When Americans think of education, they almost automatically think of public education. Through the years, it is slowly changing. Many parents today are deciding to home-school their children. Although most people think that a public education is better, most statistics and facts tend to show that home schooling is beneficial in more ways. It is estimated that parents are now teaching over two million children at home, rather than in public or even private schools.

Education in our public schools has been on the down slope for over twenty years now. Public schools have lost all values and biblical morality. This was what our country was founded on and it has been replaced with humanism. One example of humanism in our schools is that they teach evolution, not creationism. Some people believe that this problem is happening because of the removal of God and prayer in public schools; the U.S. Supreme Court did this in 1962. Beginning in 1962, SAT scores plummeted. Teen pregnancies, teen sexual diseases, teen suicides, teen alcohol, drug abuse, pornography, and illiteracy rates abruptly increased 200 to 300 percent (Klicka 48). Violence is one of the main factors effecting are schools today. Rape is a growing problem among juveniles. A juvenile commits one out of every five rapes that occur in the United States. There is also a higher use of drugs and alcohol among kids in public schools. Over 80 percent of public high school students drink alcohol and 45.7 percent have used marijuana. Drugs and alcohol make most people extremely violent. That is also why our violence and crime rates are so high.

Over hundreds of millions of dollars are spend on the security of our nation public schools. For example in elementary school, the principal banned regular recess, and the children are only allowed to play outside in a pit enclosed eight-foot concrete room or in a small section of the playground monitored by the police (Klicka 51). The disciplinary problems of children usually start even before they reach public school. In the last ten years, research shows that infants raised in daycare are more prone to behavioral problems as young children, than their home-reared cousins (Klicka 124). If you keep your child at home from the start, you will be able to discipline and raise your children with the right morals.

Because so much time is, spend trying to clean up and keep our schools safe, we are more or less falling behind in our education. Americans are farther behind in educational status than countries such as Japan, Taiwan, and China. The teachers spend too much time on the little things and forget the real reason why the children are there. Not only that, but the textbooks hold inaccurate information and do not contain the whole story. Some textbooks stated that the atomic bomb ended the Korean War (instead of World War II) and that only 53,000, rather than 126,000 Americans, were killed in World War I (Klicka 2425).

Another example was the limited information that was given in one book, the summarizes of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington's life, were told in approximately six lines each. Not only are the wrong things written in the textbooks, but they teach the children wrong values. In public school textbooks, marriage is never mentioned as the foundation of the family, and yet these books are supposed to be the textbooks that introduce the child to an understanding of American society.

Abortion is another issue. Mel and Norma Gabler document states, abortion is discussed as an aspect of birth control in biology and health and homemaking books (Klicka 56). Furthermore, virtually all sex education textbooks used in public schools throughout the country teach that any kind of sex is all right; such as premarital sex, adultery, masturbation, homosexuality, and lesbianism. Michigan school district encounter a law suit after many seventh through eleventh graders received instruction in self-Pleasuring Techniques that involved instructions in masturbation, and descriptions of sexual fantasies involving group and homosexual acts (Klicka 56). On the Massachusetts State Board of Education, in October 1991, they enacted a policy to encourage local boards to adopt a condom-distribution policy for high school students (Klicka 56). What is this telling our children? Public schools are more or less encouraging our child to have sex and expressing to them that it is okay. After all, they teach our children to do it if it feels all right.

On the other hand, when adults think about educating their children, they often forget the option of home school. The idea of home schooling started many years ago, but it really began to flourish in the 1970. For many parents this was the only option, because either public schools lacked or the schools were too far away for their children to attend. In the present day, there are over two million children being home schooled by their mothers and fathers, that is a fifteen percent rise in home school students each year (Kennedy 1). Majorities of home school students are white middle class families, but minorities are finding that this option is also better for their children rather than the public schools. Some of the main factors parents find from home schooling are: the children often become more independent and more responsible with there behavior. It will also decrease the influence of peer pressure, therefore trips can be planned at the families convenience. Families can spend more time together, and there is usually less stress because the children do not have to rush out of the house every morning. These factors and many more, are why parents of today society are choosing this method.

Critics of home schooling attack it on many fronts, arguing that children are not taught by qualified professionals, homes often do not possess the resources of schools, home-schooled children tend to be isolated from their peers, and systematic evaluation of children learning rarely occurs in the home (Simmons 1994). Yet, research does show that home schooled children are equal, if not better than, those students in public school environment are. Almost all reports have shown that home schooled students score above average on standard achievement tests. This could be because children have more one-on-one experience. Being above average in their curriculum, home schooled students also have little difficulty being accepted into colleges and universities. Boston University for example stated, "students educated at home possess the passion for knowledge, the independence, and the self-reliance that enable them to excel in our intellectually challenging programs of study". Unfortunately, more colleges are now having their own admissions policy for children that are taught at home.

Fortunately, children that are taught at home tend to have stronger relationships with their parents. This is believed to occur because children usually spend, on the average, two to three hours per day receiving instruction. The typical student at a public school spends 367 hours (more than two hours a day) in activities such as lunch, recess, and class changing. There is a lot of time wasted each day that a child could be learning something else. At home also, the curriculum can be geared to fit the individuals need. The child can spend more time on what they need help in the most and this leaves more time for hands-on activities for the children to learn by. The children have more time to spend at home building relationships with their family.

Many people are concerned about the social factor of home schooled children. It a common belief that home schooled children will not develop the proper social skills to enable them to interact with others later in life. Home school children form their own social clubs. There are things ranging from their own basketball teams to 4-H Clubs. Some children even get together and go on field trips once a week. Social skills are no longer a problem for home schooled children.

The idea of public education has been debated for years. Students are being faced with so much violence and crime in today public school system that parents are forced to find a suitable alternative. In the past few years, home schooling has had a tremendous rise and has proved to be very successful in providing effective education. Home schooling is just an option that parents have to get their children away from corrupted public education system. Though this is not always the case for all students and all public school systems, it has shown true many times.

...RONZIE GROUP ARTICLE’S SOURCE: http://www.homeschool-companion.com/disadvantages-of-homeschooling.html Disadvantages of Homeschooling As people become more disenchanted with the current education system there has been a rise in the instances of parents deciding to homeschool their children as indicated by homeschooling statistics. This is not a decision to be taken lightly, and is one that requires a lot of research beforehand. As you will discover, there are many serious disadvantages of homeschooling. The first disadvantage of home school programs is that no matter how well designed they are they will not be a match for a nationally recognized school curriculum with examinations and accreditation. Furthermore, unless you have trained and hold qualifications as a teacher you will not be able to teach your children as efficiently as a trained professional teacher would. You want to give your children the best possible start in life and that means providing them with the education to be able to succeed in the world of work. The stress that it will place on you and your family is a strong argument against homeschooling. Not only do you have to prepare lessons on every subject, but you also need to have researched each topic enough to feel comfortable answering questions your child may have. This is a huge amount of work, and even after this, there is still the question of how to present the lessons. If the child is struggling to understand then they could blame you, resulting...

...Child, School, Home: Determinants of Academic Performance* Cecilia A. Florencio Education Research Program Center for Integrative and Development Studies University of the Philippines Email: erp@cids.upd.edu.ph This study was concerned with the determinants of school-related behavior, in particular the relationship between health and nutritional status and academic performance. Such a concern is in place whenever our educational system sets for itself the objective of reducing disparities in education and raising the overall quality and efficiency of education. Although construction of new classrooms, provision of textbooks and other learning materials and training of teachers are necessary to improve the quality of education, it is illogical to expect that these will make up for the difference in learning that could arise because of biological impediments. The objectives of the study relate to (1) nature, magnitude and distribution of health and nutritional problems of school children; (2) relationship between nutritional status and academic performance; and (3) effects on academic achievement of non-nutritional variables, specifically those recommended in the 1976 Project SOUTELE Report. Some 2,304 pupils who were randomly selected from 64 schools in Region I, IV and National Capital Region in Luzon, Region VII in the Visayas and Region XII in Mindanao participated in the study. The other respondents were the pupils’ parents, teachers...

Home School Partnership

...Creating home-school partnerships are beneficial for all students, parents, and teachers. “When young children know that their parents are actively and contentedly involved in their school or center experience, they are most likely to feel comfortable in their away-from-home environment” (Estes, L. S. & Krogh, 2012). One benefit home-school partnerships result in is the children feeling and knowing that they are supported. Having parents help in the classroom gives the child a protected feeling because it gives them a since of home. This also gives the children the motivation to succeed by making their parents proud. Some parents might not have had the best experience during their school years and sometimes those experiences linger and can make them worry about their own children. With home-school partnerships parents are given the opportunity to be involved with their children’s classroom experience. The parent can give the teacher insight on behavior, and traditions and can also work with teachers on a team approach. A team approach helps everyone involved – the students, teachers, and parents. This gives the teacher and parents a sense of mutual concern. They are both there to help the child, they share concerns, and positive outcomes. “When teachers and parents help youngsters view any learning deficits as challenges rather than as weaknesses, they help the children feel encouraged to work harder rather than give up” (Estes, L. S. & Krogh, 2012), the partnership allows...

Home School vs. Public School

...Home schooled children are more advanced than children attending public schools. There are advantages to home schooling that can not be offered by public schools. The purpose of this paper is to bring awareness to some of the areas in which the statement , "Home-schooled" children are more advanced than children attending public schools, are supportive. Interest in this topic mainly are generated due to the decline in the public school system. As a parent of a current ninth grader I am saddend by the issues that children have to deal with in order to receive public education. Home schooling is defined as, ‘an education that is provided outside a ‘normal' school environment’. This type of education has undergone numerous debates, raising questions as to whether or not it is an effective educational program. Many people are equally divided between the pros and the cons, with people arguing that home schooling offers many benefits for children and others arguing that it affects children’s social skills and education. If the opportunity arose home schooling is an option I would consider home schooling for my current student. Acamdemic Schedule Home school students learning environments are more structured for the individual student. This is a comfortability level that can not be offered in public school. Parents are disputing whether home school education or a public school education is more beneficial for their child. An education that fits the need of a child is important; that’s why there are things to be considered when choosing an education path for a child. The socializing scene plays a major role in children’s lives. It is very important that children get to play and talk to their peers. The students who are home schooled are more likely to be shy compared to public school students. Being around your peers helps you build up your self-esteem. Physical fitness is something that students need to do to stay healthy and in shape. Public schools have recess where the student gets to run around and play with their classmates. Every child needs to get some kind of exercise in each day. Home school students are less likely to get exercise because they do not have anyone their age to play with unless their siblings are home schooled as well. It is very important that students have access to their teacher when needed. In public schools, the students have their teacher in the classroom with them. Home School vs Public School

...Home School vs Public School Sondra Silverberg Essentials of Sociology Everest University Online Prof. Pamela Collins December 15, 2012 It’s 1845 an aristocratic gentleman and his wife are about to leave in their horse drawn carriage only to return in a few days. Their two daughters are preparing for their lesson with their teacher who resides in the home. Although, somewhat unheard of, this family made an exception and allowed their teacher to move into the home. During the pre-1850’s many children were educated in private schools or at home. In larger communities and towns grammar schools were readily available, attendance was not a forced issue and the parents had a right to choose how their children were educated without question or judgment. Today of course it seems odd to hear of a child being homeschooled although, with events such as Columbine and the incidents of December 14th, 2012 it really makes a parent ask the question is homeschooling a safer alternative to public schools? Are public schools living up to their expectations, or is homeschooling going to become a much needed option? Finally, after my research and further readings is this something that I should consider for my children? Columbine occurred when I was in my eighth grade year, then it was, “twelve students one teacher, and the murders were dead; plus twenty-one were injured” (Rosenberg). That was scary in itself; I remember thinking could this happen here? Schools started integrating safety...

Home School Versus Public School

...Homeschool VS Public School Shawn Banks University of Composition and Communication COM/ 155 February 19, 2012 Cari Kenner The issue of homeschooling versus public education has been an ongoing debate for a very long time. The decision between the two forms of education has plagued parents for an equal amount of time as well. For some parents, the choice is easy because the options are limited by funds and availability of the parent’s time. Academic environment can be an issue for some parents. There are also several health and safety concerns that parents must face too. One of the biggest concerns that parents contend with is the overwhelming difference in the social aspect between homeschooling and public education. Granted that both can accommodate a quality education to its students, there are many differences between homeschooling and a public education. For the most part, homeschooling your children are reasonably inexpensive. With the Internet, parents can get the curriculum for the grade level of the child for free. There are plenty of websites that offer this service. This leaves the price tag for the supplies that the child will need. If these are bought by bulk during the July/August back-to-school season, parents can save a ton of money. By doing these things the cost for homeschooling a child would be under fifty dollars per child. Public school, on the other hand, in some cases is quite different. Public schools across the country struggle...

Home School Versus Public School

...Public School versus Home School In the world that we have today we seem to have more options than we had in the past. One of those choices is the choice between home school and public school. Several factors can be involved when making this decision. One might ask his or herself; which choice of school is better? Public school is more effective than homeschooling because it allows children to communicate with each other and guides them in the right direction concerning their grades. As I previously said, there are many factors that should be looked at thoroughly in order to make a final decision on your choice of school. One of those factors would be self-discipline. Self-discipline is the action in which you are able to discipline yourself to complete tasks when needed too without anyone helping you. Self-discipline is sometimes hard to have especially as a child or young adult. It is not something that comes easy; it has to be worked on for some time. In order to succeed at home school, self-discipline is something that must be made. There will be many times that students will have assignments that need to be completed, but there are other things that the student really wants to do. If you do not have self-discipline, then you are not going to be able to accomplish the necessary things needed in order to succeed in home school. Public school is not as much of a challenge because you have an adult there to push you and get you motivated to succeed at all times. Sometimes...

There are certain public schools that have a more difficult curriculum, which challenges students academically. Parents want what is best for their children’s education, public or homeschooled. Home School vs Public School

...Renooka Alummoottil Engl 1302-45400 Dr. Shazia Ali July 1, 2013 Home School vs Public School Education When it comes to education, the choice on what form of education is best for a child should be of the utmost importance to parents. In order to choose the best education environment for a child, certain matters have to be taken into consideration. Parents need to be educated on the advantages and disadvantages of both public and home school education. Having all the information would enable them to make the best decision for their child’s education. One type of academic setting may be suitable for some children and not others. “In 2007, the number of homeschooled students was about 1.5 million, an increase from 850,000 in 1999 and 1.1 million in 2003. The percentage of the school-age population that was homeschooled increased from 1.7 percent in 1999 to 2.9 percent in 2007. The increase in the percentage of homeschooled students from 1999 to 2007 represents a 74 percent relative increase over the 8-year period and a 36 percent relative increase since 2003” (U.S. Department of Education). These facts support the view that the trend of parents moving to educate their children at home is more beneficial to the child. Because each child is different and may have different needs, they would benefit from an individualized attention setting in order to grow and thrive which cannot be provided by the public school system. If a child is in a setting that is not suitable for them,...

Home Study vs Traditional Schools

...the point where students might be able to study at home full time. Some people think students should study at home using computers and television. On the other hand, others believe it is better for students to attend traditional schools instead. From my point of view, it is better for students to go to school because it is a more effective way to study and help students develop important social skills. First of all, studying in a traditional school setting is a more effective way to learn. While it is true that studying using technology can be beneficial, technology should only be used to supplement education. When students study at home alone with no interaction with teachers or classmates, they are at a disadvantage. Face to face interaction is necessary to fully understand the material being presented. I took an online course a few years ago, and it was very interesting, but often I had questions where the answers were not immediately available. However, in a traditional classroom setting, students can raise their hands and ask the teacher for more information or clarification. In that sense, studying at home using only technology, students may develop gaps in their knowledge. These gaps can be more effectively filled in through the guidance of a teacher. Moreover, when students attend a traditional school, they can develop social skills. Part of the schooling process is the instruction of social skills. In a school, students learn to cooperate, make compromises and understand...

Pubic Education vs Home School

...Home School Vs. Public Education What do kids hate more than anything in the world? That is an easy answer, school. So what better way to solve that problem? Home school. Home school has it perks, but it also has a lot of set backs as well. A lot of parents worry about the influences their children are under at school, and believe that some of the rules set are unfair. Even though some parents do not trust the public school system, I believe that public education, in most cases, is a lot better for children than home school because children learn how to socialize and many children learn better hands own. Learning to socialize with other children, and just people in general is a very important lesson that children learn as they grow up. A child who is home schooled will have trouble learning how to socialize. Public schools teach lessons on how to socialize with others and live in the real world. In public school , kids are around lots of other kids around their own age. This teaches them how to appropriately to interact with one another, and will therefore, teach them to do this with people in general. High school offers classes that teach them good health, how to practice safe sex, safe driving, how to cook well and safely, the importance of physical health, and many more things of this nature. Public school also allows children to learn how to deal with problems that can arise between people and how appropriately to deal with them. Lessons...

Public School Versus Home Schooled

...PUBLIC SCHOOL VERSUS HOME SCHOOL Lisa Cole As parents, we are all concerned about our child’s education; whether to home school or send our child to public school. Home school and public school each has their pros and cons, making it a hard decision for parents to make; socialization, arts and music, peer pressure, and time management. Socialization is a huge part of a person’s life, and the ability to teach our children at a young age is very important. When a child is home schooled, there is a less chance for socialization among peers compared to public school. In public school a child is able to socialize with peers their age, a variety of ethnicity, and cultures. There is a downside to public school, peer pressure. Homeschooled children are less likely to have to face peer pressure; violence, drugs, and alcohol. Children in public schools are taught at a young age about drugs, sex, alcohol, and violence. Public schools hire professionals to talk to our children in these areas. A child who is home schooled, it is up to the parent how the child is taught about drugs, sex, alcohol, and violence. Most parents are embarrassed to talk to their children about these topics and often get ignored. If a parent is not sure on where to begin there are doctors, pamphlets, and the library for books. Not only is socialization important; so is art, music, and sports. Art, music, physical education, and sports are more accessible in public school. Home schooled children are...
