...Home Schooling: A Real Alternative Kevin Sumrall Research and Writing: ENG 215 Professor Kristen Shelton May 15, 2011 The times in which we live are becoming more competitive than ever before. How well one is prepared to step up and meet that competition is what education is all about. The mainstream opinion would say that the only way to the top is through public or even better; private schools. As most of us are already painfully aware, we all cannot afford private schools for our kids, especially if we have more than one or two children. Homeschooling has been viewed by many as a substandard choice, where many others are coming to realize that it is much better than any other choice they may have. There are as many as 2 million children being home schooled right now with a projected growth of 15 to 20% annually. The very high test scores for homeschoolers versus the public school students is one of the main points on the platform for the benefits of homeschooling. There is an alternative to public and private schools, and its right at home. There was a time, not so very long ago, when parents could send their kids down to the bus stop and never think twice about whether or not they would be safe and cared for and taught correctly all of the same things that they learned when they went to school. The sad truth of the matter is that most parents don’t know half of what their kids are being taught in school today. Most of the time, teachers are allowed to show kids movies...

...Homeschooling refers to the concept of educating children at home instead of sending them to public or private schools. The concept is not new. Earlier, most children were educated at home because not everyone could afford to send their children to schools. Nowadays, homeschooling has become popular in many countries for various reasons. Reasons for Homeschooling One of the prime reasons why some prefer homeschooling is the questionable quality of education in public schools. Also, many prefer educating their children at home due to the costs involved in traditional schooling. Some parents believe that they know their child's strengths and weaknesses best and hence, are in a better position to teach him. Some prefer it so as to keep their child away from bad company. There are people who opt to educate their children at home because they want them to absorb the morals and values of their family, and follow their religious beliefs. Some parents think that homeschooling helps build stronger family bonds. It has been observed that homeschooling, when undertaken meticulously has benefited many. However, every coin has two sides and even homeschooling has its share of demerits. Let us look at its negative impact on parents and students. Parents Absence of Certified Educational Professionals A parent may have good educational qualifications, but that does not make him or her a good teacher. Teaching is an art, which requires the ability to understand children's needs....

...What is Home schooling? Home schooling occurs when parents take charge of their children’s education — organizing subjects, teaching lessons or arranging for tutors, evaluating progress, and supervising social contacts. Homeschooling, also known as home education, is the education of children outside the formal settings of public or private schools and is usually undertaken directly by parents or tutors. Despite the name, only a portion of home education may be delivered in the family home, with the rest being provided within the local community or elsewhere. Where did it originate from? The earliest public schools in modern Western culture were established in the early 16th century in the German states of Gotha and Thuringia. However, even in the 18th century, the majority of people in Europe lacked formal schooling, which means they were homeschooled, tutored or received no education at all Regional differences in schooling existed in colonial America; in the south, farms and plantations were widely dispersed such that community schools like those in the more compact settlements were impossible. What countries are popularly known for homeschooling apart from Australia? Home-schooling is legal in many countries. Countries with the most prevalent home education movements include Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. ...

...Author’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Number Date of Submission Home Schooling “There are about 2.2 million home-educated students in the United States, and it appears that the numbers are expected to continue increasing in the coming years” (NHERI). Families that have embraced home schooling therefore, do not depend on the public, tax-funded resources to help their children in education. The current homeschool program according to NHERI commenced in the 1970s when John Holt, an advocate of school reforms and an educational theorist started campaigns urging individuals that formal schools enhanced rote learning intended to oppress students in classrooms and that the institutions’ curriculum were designed to make learners compliant employees. Holt went on to publish his newsletter, Growing Without Schooling in which he conveyed public schools to be disorderly, scary for learners, morally irresolute and most of all, academically underachieving, hence detrimental to children. Despite the opposition that the unorthodox education faced in its initiation, it has grown rapidly, and people currently perceive it as an acceptable educational alternative in this 21st century. Therefore, regardless of the disadvantages in home education such as lack of social development, missed experiences, and reduced competition among others, parents should adopt this education system because it is equally, if not more, beneficial since it creates the opportunity for personalized learning, assured safety...

...Home Schooling vs. Traditional Schooling Dominic Harden COM/170 07/07/14 Cathy Smith With society gradually changing, parents may consider different options to meet their child’s educational needs. The technology today provides parents with choices regarding what type of schooling their child will be attending. The parent can have their child attend traditional school or resort to teaching their child at home which is commonly referred to as home schooling. Whether the child attends public school or is schooled in their home there are certain things that apply to each type of schooling. Although homeschooling has its benefits, traditional schooling is set in stone when it comes to things like the curriculum, schedule and school environment. How the child learns is a key factor when determining which type of schooling him or her is going to attend. Depending on the child, one type of schoolings curriculum can benefit the child or hinder their progress. The child will receive the basic skills regardless, whether they are home schooled or attend a public school. These basic skills include things like reading, writing, and math skills. ...Home Schooling: The right choice? In most countries in the world governments require children to attend schools in which trained teachers are responsible for educating the children using approved curriculum. However an increasing numbers of parents decide to teach their children at home. There an estimated 1,700,000 to 2,100,000 children home educated during 2002-2003 in the United States” and the growing rate is 7% to 15% per year1. A home schooling seems to be much more efficient than that of public schools. Home schooling is like a tutorial a one on one relationship. Some critics say that parents don’t have a special education to teach, so they are not as effective as trained teachers. However a study2 found that home educated students excelled on nationally- normed standardized achievement exams. On average, home students outperformed their public school peers by 30 to 37 percentile points across all subjects. Research has show that homeschoolers on average do better on a standardized achievement tests. They score above national average on SAT and ACT. Probably the question most often asked of homeschoolers is, "What about socialization?" One of the greatest stumbling blocks to homeschooling is the public perception that homeschooled students are isolated and unsocialized. In fact, the opposite is often true, as homeschoolers have the opportunity to socialize with many different groups and ages, not just with their own peers in a traditional school setting...

...Children should never be educated at home by their parents. What is your opinion? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. In most countries children attend school and only in rare cases are educated by their parents in a “home schooling” situation. While I accept that this might work well for some families, I agree believe that a school can generally provide children with a better education. In my view, the most important point is to ensure the overall quality of education for all students. Not only is it impractical for working parents to find sufficient time to teach their children, but they are not pedagogical and subject experts like teachers are. Additionally, in a school a given curriculum and regular tests ensure children learn all the required skills. Parents might be more biased when judging their own children’s skills. Furthermore, a school can provide equal opportunities to all children in getting a solid education and a balanced view of the world. Some parents might be excellent at teaching, while others are less ambitious or able unfairly disadvantaging disadvantage some children. Similarly, children with special education needs, like being dyslexic, may need the help of an expert more easily available at a school. Finally, some parent’s have extreme or political views and leaving education to them would deprive children of the chance to explore different views. Children must be given the chance to form their own opinion. Another important...

...Public Schools vs. home schooling have been a debate for over 30 years. With an increase of school shootings, drugs or other issues, many parents’ have decided to home school their child rather than send them to public school. I am writing this paper to discuss the benefits that home schooling and the public school system have when trying to decide what is best for your child. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so let me discuss some of them. In a home school type of environment it has more of a one-one with their teacher/parent; they also can stop and ask for help at any time. The biggest advantage is that they also won’t have any homework. Also with homeschooling the child will have a more flexible school and have more free time. Now let’s discuss some disadvantages of home schooling. The child will not have any socialization with other peers’ their own age; they will not gain the self-confidence in some cases. (http://allaboutparenting.org) Another advantage is that they will not be substance to that thing that we all call peer pressure. There is another advantage that I have realized and that is the child not attending public school is not tied down to all of the homework that is given in public school. A child can be given so much homework that it will keep them awake for hours at night trying to complete it. In a homeschool setting there is no homework. (http://allaboutparenting.org) In a public school type setting a child will have more programs...

...One of the most common questions homeschool graduates and homeschooled children face is that of socialization. In order to address this question, it is important to first understand what is meant by the term “socialization.” Socialization refers to social interaction but it also refers to understanding and learning to navigate a society’s social norms and rules of behavior. Most scholars view peer interaction, which generally centers on the school, as a critical component of this kind of socialization. However, many homeschool parents and leaders argue that the socialization children receive in school is unnatural and actually harmful, and that socialization is best gained through life experiences that center around the family, and should include interactions with those in a variety of age groups. Definition: Most people believe that an extrovert is a person who is friendly and outgoing. While that may be true, that is not the true meaning of extroversion. Basically, an extrovert is a person who is energized by being around other people. This is the opposite of an introvert who is energized by being alone. Extroverts tend to "fade" when alone and can easily become bored without other people around. Definition: Contrary to what most people think, an introvert is not simply a person who is shy. In fact, being shy has little to do with being an introvert! Shyness has an element of apprehension, nervousness and anxiety, and while an introvert may also be shy, introversion itself...

Home Schooling vs. Public Schooling

...Public Schooling VS Home Schooling COM/156 March 16, 2014 Pam Eshelman Now, more than ever, parents are exploring the options available to them concerning the education of their children. This decision, though a personal one for every parent, requires looking closely at the different benefits, as well as drawbacks of the options available to them. It goes without saying that both schooling options have their pros and cons, but many parents often question which one is better for their children. There is far more to consider than one might realize, so let us explore some of the lesser publicized aspects of the public versus home education dilemma. Home schooling can give a more direct and focused, although public school can have benefits in several ways like a child’s social development. First, let us look at some of the benefits of the home school. I was given an opportunity to interview my aunt Robyn Jeffords who home schooled all 5 of her children and the information below is all accredited to her. Home schooling can be good for a child in many ways. A homeschooled child often has access to a more direct one-on-one instructional setting, allowing for a very personalized learning environment. Within this setting, the parent can tailor every lesson to the specific learning style of the student, for optimum understanding of the material. It also means that the student can move as quickly or as slowly as needed. If the material is mastered...

...Tinita Johnson Professor: Belles Com/155 June 14, 2012 Home Schooling vs. Traditional Schooling In today’s changing society, parents may often ponder over the best choice for their children’s educational needs. Today’s technological age provides choices for parents regarding the type of school that their children will attend. They have the choice of sending their children to traditional school or teaching them at home, commonly referred to as home schooling, which is often conducted by use of a personal computer in the home. Home schooling provides a more direct approach of educating today’s youth when compared to public schools. Alternatively, public school offers children a greater chance of enhancing their social development and skills. There are many advantages of parent’s home schooling their children. These advantages include individual bonding time with the children, security of knowing that their children are learning, and more access to monitoring their children’s academic progress. Another added benefit of schooling involves modification of the curriculum to accommodate each student’s ability. Within the home school curriculum, a parent has the freedom to filter out subjects that they do not want their children to learn. According to (Kunzman) there has been an increase of 74% in homeschool attendance between the years of 1999 to 2007. It was also noted that this growth is twelve times that of public school attendance. Some disadvantage of homeschooling...

Public Education vs Home Schooling

...year more and more parents are taking their children out of the public school system and enrolling them in home schooling programs. Parents question the current public school system and wonder if home schooling would be a better alternative for their children’s education. Considering that there are already more than four million children enrolled in these types of programs in the United States alone, it is not surprising that it has caused some heated debates during the past decade. Along with an average 15 to 20 % yearly growth rate, many professional educators are worried that because of this much needed funds will be kept from entering the public education system. During the year of 2007 the United States Department of Education conducted a study that showed home schooled student's test scores were much higher than others. Even the median scores for all grades were much larger than those students of public or private schools. For example, in grades one through four, average home schooled students were usually one grade higher than their peers in public school. By the equivalent of eighth grade, those home schooled students were usually considered four years ahead of those in public school. One reason for these results is that home schooled students often receive much more one-on-one attention than the average student in public or private school does. In home schooling programs the students receive much more attention than they do in a Public School because there are usually...

Home Versus Public Schooling

...Interest in homeschooling is becoming more widespread around the world. In your opinion, should school be compulsory for all children, or should families be allowed the right to choose to educate their children at home. Discuss both views giving your opinion. Education is one of the most important parts of our lives. There are different methods of education worldwide. The most common ones are public education and homeschooling. Many people believe that public education should be compulsory, while others believe that education should be flexible. The option of homeschooling is beneficial in terms of flexibility and independence. Children don’t have to wake up early in the morning, hurry up while having their breakfast and get stressed when they are late to school. They can make their own schedule and this leads to independence of children in terms of making their own decisions. Moreover, children don’t have to wait lunch time to eat. They can eat whenever they are hungry. They don’t have to ask permission to use the restroom, since they can do it whenever they need to. On the other hand, public education has also benefits in terms of socializing. In schools, children meet new people and communicate with them, get involved in sports and other useful activities. This kind of activities leads children to explore the society. However, public education has some disadvantages in terms of crime and student behavior. Children face with peer pressure and it can harm them psychologically...
