...Home-Style Cookies Jane Smith BUS644: Operations Management Professor Ben-Gourion Mestman February 6, 2012 Home-Style Cookies Production Processes The batch processing system begins when orders are received from distributors. Production schedules are based on the orders received. Each day, a list of cookies to be made is given to the person in charge of mixing. The ingredients needed are activated through a master list containing all the ingredients to ensure accuracy. After all ingredients are mixed, the batter is then poured so the cookies can be baked. Once the cookies are finished baking, they are cooled and then placed in the boxes manually by staff who removes the broken or deformed cookies. The boxes are then wrapped, sealed, and labeled automatically. The company has increased productivity by cutting the non-filled individual cookies on a diagonal so more cookies can bake at a time. In addition, automating the ingredients helps cut back on human error when mixing the ingredients. Increasing the length of the ovens made it possible to bake more cookies at one time. This increase in addition with cutting the non-filled cookies on the diagonal, makes it possible to be more productive. When one uses the machine productivity measure, it is evident that the number of units of output divided by the dollar value of output per machine hour is higher increasing the length of the oven. The company is making the right decision...

...Melissa Edwards Home-Style Cookies BUS 644 Operations Management Week 1 Assignment 1 August 21, 2011 Home-Style Cookies The production process for this small town cookie company is called a batch processing system (Stevenson, 2009). The batch processing system is basically used when a moderate volume of goods or services are desired, and it can handle a moderate variety in products or services (Stevenson, 2009). The process begins as soon as the management gets orders form distributers; these orders are then used to schedule the production (Stevenson, 2009). In the beginning of each shift has a list made up of the cookies that will be made that day and then are delivered to the person that is in charge of the mixing (Stevenson, 2009). The person who is in charge of the list and mixing enters the information into the computer, since the master list includes all the ingredients that are needed for the cookies (Stevenson, 2009). After putting the ingredients into the computer, the computer then determines the amount of ingredients that are needed, according to the quantity of the cookies that are being ordered, and relay information to the storage silos that are located outside the plant, where the main ingredients are stored (Stevenson, 2009). The company has two different ways to increase its productivity. The first way is that the diagonal-cut cookies tend to require less space than straight-cut cookies, and the result in a higher level of productivity. In addition...

...Home-Style Cookies Briefly describe the cookie production process. The Baking Company system called batching to make the dough with which they bake their cookies. According to the textbook, batch processing is used when a moderate value or goods or services are desired, and it can produce making a variety of products and services (Stevenson, 2009). Once an order is received from distributors, production is scheduled from these orders. The first step in the production process is to send the order to the mixing person. The person in who mixes the dough will determine which ingredients are needed to produce the cookies that are ordered. The ingredients are then entered into the computer that determines what quantities of each ingredient is needed. The computer will then send those results to the silos that contain each ingredient. The silos will then automatically release the correct amount needed to the mixing machines. Once the mixing occurs then the batter is cut into the cookie shape and deposited on a conveyor belt that takes it to the oven for baking. After they are baked, they set them out to cool. Once cooled, the cookies are all boxed by hand. Cookies that don’t meet the company’s specifications are thrown out. Finally, the boxes are put into a machine that wraps, seals, and labels boxes that are ready to go to distributors to be sold in stores and supermarkets. What are two ways that the company has increased productivity? Why did increasing the length of the ovens...

The Lew-Mark Baking Company according to the case study is from a small town in western New York. Lew-mark Baking company operates in New York and New Jersey. It employs around 200 workers in a mainly blue collar, informal atmosphere. In my paper, I will answer several questions about operations for this company The Cookie Production Process When describing the cookie production process for Lew-mark baking, it is best described as using the batch processing system. The batch processing system can best be described as the execution of a series of programs ("jobs") on a computer without human interaction. “Batch Processing is used when a moderate value of goods or services is desired, and it can handle a moderate variety of products and services” (Stevenson 2009, P 239). This method helps with quantity management because Lew mark only makes cookies according to demand. What are two ways that the company has increased productivity? This system utilizes computers to ensure that ingredients are not wasted and production is efficient. The company increased its productivity by cutting non filled cookies diagonally and increasing the size of both of their ovens. The company’s use of manual labor and refusal to implement automated packing process shows a commitment to the small town in which the company is based out of. Productivity

...Why is productivity important for a nation? Productivity growth is a crucial source of growth in living standards. Productivity growth means more value is added in production and this means more income is available to be distributed. It also provides the discretionary income necessary to finance social/environment programs.  With higher productivity growth, it helps improve the outlook for all of these issues.  It helps keep inflation in check and makes it easier for American businesses and workers to compete. It also raises the standards of living, and reduces the difficulty of meeting long –run demographic challenges by increasing the total amount of resources available.  Productivity in a nation is a reflection of what both domestic and foreign firms choose to do in that location.  According to Stevenson (2009) states “productivity levels are also important for industries and companies.  For companies, a higher productivity relative to their competitors gives them a competitive advantage, in the market place.  With a higher productivity, they can afford to undercut competitor’s prices to gain market share, or charge the same prices but realize greater profits.  For an industry, higher relative productivity means it is less likely to be supplanted by foreign industry”.   Why do you suppose that service jobs have a lower productivity than manufacturing jobs? Service jobs have lower productivity than manufacturing jobs.  Because services represent an increasing share of...

A Fortune

...in social status. They both hunger after acknowledgement from their fathers, they have both been ignored and mistreated by their fathers; they both suffer from the same privations and both are searching for redemption. The short story A Fortune begins in medias res and is written in past tense and is told through a male first-person narrator, which leads to an understanding of the narrator’s inner thoughts and feelings. The narrator’s appearance is superficially described as rather unattractive, but his name remains unknown for the reader which creates anonymity. Through several flashbacks the reader gradually understands the narrator’s childhood, personality and social status in society. His social status is emphasized by the writing style in the short story as well – his usage reflects his social inheritance. By using contractions, slang and everyday language the reader gets the impression that the first-person narrator belongs to a lower social group in the society. This finds expression in sentences like: ’Boy would he yell at me’ or ‘My ma tried to raise me well’ where the narrator uses slang, or for instance the sentence ‘Hey, kid, you lost?’ where the verb “are” is omitted. However, the reader does not get any further details about the geographic location of the setting, and the historical time of the short story is unknown for the reader too. Though this lack of historical or geographical information the short story and its themes become relevant at all times in all...
