Homeostatis
Homeostatic is carried out around the whole body, it reaches from every cell up to whole organs and systems. We need the homeostasis because if there was no constant internal environment, our enzymes would not work properly. It means that nothing would operate correctly and we would then die. There are six things that are essential to health and which must be controlled: carbon dioxide, urea, ions, sugar, water and temperature. We need to remove waste products from the body to keep it working, as waste products can be poisonous to the body. If they are not removed then it can stop chemical reactions from happening and cells can be damaged.
Carbon dioxide is a waste product that needs to be removed to keep the body from becoming ill. However, extra carbon dioxide must be removed; otherwise the body becomes too acidic. It is mainly lose in the air that we breathe out, but a small amount can also be removed through urine.
The body needs to maintain the amount of oxygen that reaches our cells. More oxygen enables our cells to more quickly respire, so that our muscles can contract more rapidly. As well as oxygen entering the body, carbon dioxide has to leave the body. Breathing deeper and faster expels carbon dioxide from our lungs more efficiently. By controlling the levels of gases through our breathing rates, homeostasis is maintained.
Urea is also another waste product that is produced. It is poisonous and so it must be removed some of it is lost through sweat. The kidneys remove this from the blood and turn it into urine so it can be removed out of the body safely. It is stored in the bladder until it is released.
If the right balance of ions is not kept, our cells can become shrivelled, swollen and can even burst. They are made up of sodium, potassium, hydrogen and phosphate. These are controlled through our urine and the amount of water we intake.
