How many times at your local school has a homeschooled student asked to play a sport for your school? Many school districts are having this question asked to them by homeschooled students and many are answering the question “No” for many reasons. A few of those reasons are “How would we monitor your grades?’ “How would you meet requirements that public school students meet?” Those are just two of the many questions that are asked. Homeschoolers should not be able to play public school sports.
Many people believe that homeschooled students have a right to play public school sports. In most states, if one would like to play sports he or she has to at least attend part of the day or have grades monitored in some way. For example, in California …show more content…
“The student must be enrolled at the member school to play sports at that school” (IHSA homeschool fact sheet). This rule is important because it means that the student can not just come to the school to play sports, they have to be taking a few classes at the school to play sports. “It is the local school’s decision to decide if the student should be allowed to participate in interscholastic sports” (IHSA homeschool fact sheet). This law is also important because most local school districts do not want homeschooled students to play sports and the IHSA made it their decision to decide if these students should be allowed to play or not. “The student must be passing 25 credit hours attending that school to participate in interscholastic activities” (IHSA homeschool fact sheet).This rule means that students must be attending the school they want to participate in sports at for five hours a day, five days a week, and passing all the classes to participate in interscholastic sports. The IHSA, also stresses that education comes before athletics, because a homeschooled student can not be failing classes, just like public school students can not be failing.
