These will take some thought….FML

From Chapter 16:

PROBLEM 1

Thirty samples of size 4 of the customer waiting time at a call center for a health insurance company resulted in an overall mean of 10.4 minutes and average range of 0.9 minutes. Compute control limits for - and R-charts using formulas 16.3. For the R-chart: UCL = D4= 2.282*.9=2.0538 LCL = D3=0*.9=0 For the chart: UCL = + A2 = 10.4+.729(.9) = 11.0534 =11.05 LCL = - A2 = 10.4-.729(.9) = 9.7466 = 9.75

PROBLEM 2

One hundred insurance claim forms are inspected daily for 25 working days, and the number of forms with errors are recorded as in Exhibit 16.11(the one presented below I’m assuming). The p-chart is shown below Verify the Excel calculations of the control limits by hand using the formulas in the chapter. (This means show your calculations…) n=100 K=25 or 23 K=25 p-bar = .47 standard deviation =.0.04991 = S== = 0.04991 UCLp = + 3 S= 0.61973
-------------------------------------------------
LCLp = - 3 S= 0.32027 K=23 p-bar = .32 standard deviation =0.046648 = S== = 0.046648 UCLp = + 3 S= 0.459943 LCLp = - 3 S= 0.180057 Comment on the chart. Assume that samples 9 and 23 have attributal causes and can be excluded as one-time considerations.

PROBLEM 3

Suppose that a specification calls for LTL = 2.0 and UTL = 6.0. A sample of 100 parts found  = 4.3 and = 0.6. Compute Cp, Cpl, Cpu, and Cpk. Should the manager consider any action based on these results? What are the definitions of Cp, Cpl, Cpu, and Cpk ? Cp - relates the natural variation of the process with the design specifications in a single, quantitative measure.
Cpu – one-sided upper limit
Cpl – one-sided lower limit
Cpk – worst case and upper specs can be met regardless of where the process is centered.
Cp= = 1.11
Cpu= = .94
Cpl= =1.28
Cpk= min(Cpl, Cpu) = min (1.28,.94) = .94

...HOMEWORK 2 Avoiding Permanent Damage from Temporary Help Dated: 08/01/2012 Keller Graduate School of New York Course MGMT 520 Business: Its Legal, Ethical, and Global Environment In nowadays, background check of hiring employee is practicing by almost all agencies. Point is that, the skills of the applicant can be, somehow, figured out. It is much more difficult to assess the level of trust, honesty, mental toughness, and loyalty. Reading through chapter 9, and conducting a slight research, my answers to the questions of the given scenario are as follows: 1. Do temporary agencies have a “duty” to run background checks? If so, did Robert half “breach that duty?” Why or Why not? According to the law of negligence, temporary agencies should follow the duty policy on background check on pre-employment, in order not to satisfy an element of negligence. In case of Robert Half International Inc., and Fox Associates, Inc., I don’t think, that duty was breached, the company trusted to provided information by Ms. Ross about herself, and she got good recommendations from her former employers. At some extend, it is a background check. 2. The court ruled against Fox Associates. Was the court correct? Do you think Fox should have done its own background check? Why or Why not? I agree with the court decision, that it was determined that duty is not breached, because it happened unknowingly. Even though the company recommended the employee, Fox could do its own......

...Homework and Testing 1 Homework and Testing Assigning Homework How much is too much? As with classroom assignments, homework should never be given as busy work. It should have a purpose with a goal. And as I mentioned in the Behavioral Approach to Learning, homework should NEVER be given as punishment. The kid will associate homework with punishment. This may interest you. Harris Cooper (1998) analyzed more than 100 research studies on homework in American schools. He found that homework had a very small connection with test scores at the elementary level. If anything, the more homework an elementary school student had, the more negative their attitude was toward school. Plus it takes away from their social time, which is an important part of growing up. Kids need to learn social skills. Too much homework causes stress, as you probably know very well by now. Kids need to have down time too! Why does homework have such a small effect at the elementary level? One reason is that young children have limited attention spans and are very distractible. It is difficult to do homework in a house that has many distractions. Teachers need to work with parents and help students find a quiet space to do homework. Most professional organization in education agrees that homework should never exceed 10 - 20 minutes per day in grades K - 2. In grades 3 - 6 homework should never exceed 30 - 60 minutes per day. Another reason elementary school children do not benefit much from homework is...

...Candice Yang Week 9 1. What has made Chateaux Margaux (CM) successful? What distinguishes CM’s product, customers and brand equity from that of competitors? During 18th century, Chateaux Margaux experience a golden age because of strong demand for Bordeaux wines by the British; In 1977, Andre Mentzelopouls re-introduced the chateau’s second wine and redefined the Pavillon Blanc white wine. His vision of paying attention to quality and innovation made CM outstanding. After Corinne took over CM, she hired Pontallier to help her. Their combination was very successful. They came up with useful ideas leading to finer wines. They focused on increasing first-growth wine quality. Distinguishes: CM put less of production in the first and second wines and reduced yields overall in the vineyard in order to concentrated the flavors in the remaining grapes. Therefore CM got fewer bottles but with higher quality. While chateau relied on the channel to serve as the distribution and marketing arms for its wine, CM took note of demand shifts. It conducted the “ambassador” program in China to get close to customers in the big increasing market. The brand equity of CM is it offered high quality first-growth wines and good reputation for spectacular wines. 2. Assuming CM will go ahead with a third wine, whom should they target in their marketing efforts? Core customers in traditional markets, like the US, UK, Japan and France. Because CM wines have become inaccessible to......

Intermediate Managerial Finance Ch. 9 Homework

...------------------------------------------------- Chapter 9 ------------------------------------------------- Financial Planning and Forecasting Financial Statements ------------------------------------------------- ANSWERS TO BEGINNING-OF-CHAPTER QUESTIONS We like to use discussion questions along with relatively simple and easy to follow calculations for our lectures. Unfortunately, forecasting is by its very nature relatively complex, and it simply cannot be done in a realistic manner without using a spreadsheet. Accordingly, our primary “question” for Chapter 9 is really a problem, but one that can be discussed. Therefore, we base our lecture primarily on the BOC model and we use the class period to discuss forecasting and Excel modeling. We cover the chapter in about 2 hours, and then our students work a case on the subject later in the course. 9-1 The major components of the strategic plan include the firm’s purpose, the scope of its operations, its specific (quantified) objectives, its operating strategies, its operating plan, and its financial plan. Engineers, economists, marketing experts, human resources people, and so on all participate in strategic planning, and development of the plan is a primary function of the senior executives. Regional and world economic conditions, technological changes, competitors’ likely moves, supplies of resources, and the like must all be taken into account, along with the firm’s own R&D......
