Chapter 6 1. There are several basic differences between foragers and food producers. First groups show strong dependency on environment. They hunted, gathered nutritive plants, insects and other. Such communities easily moved from one place to another because of season or other circumstances. Because of mobility foragers didn’t have goal to accumulate valuables. Members of communities had equal access to sources. Food producers had different behavior. These people also depended on environmental factors, like access to water. But they didn’t use only nature’s benefits. Food producers developed them for own good. They cultivated land, planted crops and domesticated animals. Depending on group's type food producers used more complicated instruments, created more surpluses and had different social structures. Foraging and agriculture. Foragers used only what they gathered or hunted. But still such societies spent near 42 hours per week for “foraging for food, making and repairing tools, and food preparation and other household maintenance” (“Chapter 6”, n. d., p. 11). In agricultural societies people needed to prepare land, control weed, care about animals and do other work. But technical development helped to replace manual labor with mechanisms in many cases. People spent less time to do more work. But, compared to foragers, agricultural societies needed more time and efforts, because they wanted to produce more food and other goods. 2. Both Ju′hoansi (Dobe) and Zuni depended on water sources. These societies also used simple instruments. Those are only basic similarities. Dobe had straight division of labor. Men hunted for meat and women gathered other products, like plants, nuts and roots. All Zuni’s people, including children, were involved in

...Week 1 Homework Assignment: Chapters 1 Questions 4 and 7 Cruz A. Morin II Devry University Chapter 1 4. Why does word – of – mouth “advertising” work so effectively? Word – of – mouth advertising works of effectively because it is the simplest way to advertise. When people receive either excellent service or a good deal on a product they will talk about to everyone they know. Companies know this really well and want to ensure that is what is delivered to each customer weather it is a new customer or someone that has been a customer for a long time. Every company wants positive word – of – mouth advertising because it is free to them. The other way that word – of – mouth advertising is being updated now is with the use of social media by everyone. Besides regular social media sites you also have review sites that people post both good and bad reviews on (ex. YELP). 7. What do we mean by an “engaged” customer, and how does this relate to customer loyalty? An “engaged” customer is someone who feels that they have an emotional tie to the company that they are doing business with. Most companies will use loyalty programs to in a way entice customers to keep returning. When extremely satisfied customers have been asked if they felt an emotional tie and many said no. If a company wants to truly rise the level of customer loyalty they have to increase the emotional tie in that each customer fills and at the end of the day if there is no tie in with the emotions then...

Four Basic Principles to Enhance Study Skills

...Four Basic Principles to Enhance Study Skills 1. Make doing homework a positive experience: associate it with love and affection, freedom, fun and self-control. 2. Make homework a high priority. 3. Use homework to teach organization skills and improve learning skills. Remember that the primary purpose of homework is to improve learning and foster work habits. 4. Set expectations for homework, then provide and enforce logical, meaningful consequences if those expectations are not met. Make Doing Homework a Positive Experience • Provide support and praise for homework completion. • Be available to provide non-critical assistance. • Give children choice in when, where, and how they complete homework assignments. • Encourage your children to complete homework well enough that they have a sense of pride and control over their own learning and levels of competence. • Maintain a positive and helpful attitude: avoid criticism and anger. • Help children understand what types of homework they enjoy, and encourage them to choose assignments accordingly. When given a choice, some students prefer written reports; others prefer hands-on projects. • Use homework preferences in developing a homework schedule. Some children prefer to complete the assignments they like least first, while others prefer to do their easier or favorite work first. • If a child dislikes a subject, find ways to make it less frustrating. For example, set a goal of doing five math problems and...

Book Review: the Homework Myth

...Book Review The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing by Alfie Kohn University of Montevallo EDF561: Evaluations in Education Susan Scott Alfie Kohn’s (2006) book, The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing, gave me food for thought. Kohn opposes homework of any kind in any form for any grade level. He explores each commonly given, pro-homework argument in an attempt to persuade his readers, both parents and teachers, of the uselessness and possibly detrimental effects of the long-standing educational tradition. The first claim Kohn (2006) makes is that our children are “missing out on their childhoods” (p. 3). His opinion is that children spend seven hours in school everyday; that should be enough. He argues that kids need more time to be kids. Such time would include family time, friend time, time spent in extracurricular activities such as sports, music and art lessons, and play groups for younger kids. I agree. Kids do need time to enjoy their childhood. It is the most carefree time of their lives, relatively speaking. Does that mean they should have no homework at all? I am not yet ready to agree completely with that attitude. “Does homework improve learning?” Kohn (2006, p. 25) asks. The most significant issue he raises, in an attempt to answer that question, is regarding the kind of homework about which we are talking. Assignments can range from useless, fill-in-the-blank worksheets to extended projects that...
