There are many people in this country as well as in this school that believe that homosexuality is acceptable and, there are also some people who strongly oppose it, also, there are the few who are afraid of homosexual people in general. This is called homophobia. Homophobic people are afraid of homosexuals because they either strongly disagree with the person’s beliefs, or they are simply afraid that the person will flirt with them and make them uncomfortable. Homophobia should be accepted in the community because, it is not wrong to feel uncomfortable around homosexuals. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to talk or even be around homosexuals. Most students at LHS who are homophobic are homophobic because homosexuality is against their religion and he or she may not want to be around a person who is directly violating what they have believed in all of their lives. Some students avoid contact with homosexuals because they have the fear of getting themselves in trouble by expressing what they believe to homosexuals. Sophomore, Jim Phillips said, “It makes me uncomfortable being around a homosexual, because I feel that it is wrong, so I try to avoid being around them so I don’t say something that would get me in trouble.” There are also students who have nothing against homosexuals, unless they end up flirting with them. Sophomore Nick Patla said, “I’m fine with gay people, I have friends that are gay, I don’t have a problem with any of them, but it would be another story if they flirted with me. That is not

Homophobia

...I chose to implement the program that adresses homophobia in high school. I chose high school because I personally believe that homophobia and heterosexism is most evident amongst high school students. Students in high school feel the need to prove themselves , especially males , and insulting someone using derogatory homosexual terms is quite common in high schools. The biggest insult I today’s society is an attack on someone’s sexuality, it also makes a person (in particular males) feel more empowered when they insult someone based on their sexuality. This problem afflicting the youth of today is getting significantly worse and there should be measures put in place to hault the discrimination against homosexual students. The program I would like to see put in place in high schools is inspired by the “Just Communities’ Safe Schools Program”. It is a two day program which is basically like workshop to inform and teach students , teachers , counsellors and administrators about homosexuality and heterosexist in high schools and how they can make in difference in changing the way we handle situations associated with it. The participants are made knowledgeable of the discrimination against homosexuals that is constantly occurring everyday in schools. Discrimination can be anything from ridiculing someone because of their sexual orientation to homophobic incidents perpetrated by the school systems itself. The first step of the program should be an information session in which the...

Internalized Homophobia

...Sandra Robinson Professor Duarte SSC 101: Social Issues October 1, 2015 Internalized Homophobia I would like to say that this is most interesting subject and one that is really miss understood by many in our society. I have started to research some information concerning this subject and I find that there are many dealing with this situation in my mist and even in my circle in the church. The definition is defined as lesbians and gay men that really fear being the way that they are but it is what it is. I have through my studies in the last week found out that Internalized homophobia is defined as the involuntary belief by lesbians and gay men that the homophobic lies, stereotypes and myths about them are true. There are two logical, predictable consequences of a lifetime of such messages.1 First, heterosexuals will grow to believe many of the messages, and treat these with this issue and kind of people accordingly. They will be thoroughly indoctrinated into their role in heterosexism, protecting their heterosexual privilege by colluding with the perpetuation of heterosexism / homophobia. But there is a second logical consequence - these same messages also stick to lesbians and gay men, resulting in internalized homophobia. Lesbians and gay men are taught to act out the lies and stereotypes, doubting themselves and other gay people (sometimes called “horizontal hostility.”) This is the...

Freedom of Speech

...When Do We Just Shut Up? Freedom of speech is one of the many great trademarks of this glorious country. But when do we tell people to shut up? Like the cartoon Bambi says: “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. One of the most ugly faces of America is racism and discrimination. They say, “sticks and stones may break bones but words will never hurt me”, but racial slurs and comments on sexual orientation hurt people everyday. Racism still exists today and its effect is still as strong as it was fifty years ago. The first amendment has allowed great men and women like Martin Luther King, Jr. to deliver speeches like ‘I Had A Dream’. By using our voice, we have gained equal rights for all people. However entertainment seems to have no concern about the progress that was made. Comedian Michael Richards, commonly known as Kramer on Seinfeld, was caught screaming racist remarks to a member of his audience. Also, shows like South Park push the limits of free speech all the time. South Park cartoons are constantly bashing Jews and making fun of religious figures. This season, South Park debuted with an episode in which the racist remark ‘nigger” was used over 40 times. However, many people feel like it helps teach the impact of the word to others. So, it is really hard to really determine what is too much and what is not. Some say that today’s gay rights movement is like the Civil Rights movement. And homosexuals are today’s top victims of free speech...

Discrimination Speech

...DISCRIMINATION SPEECH Discrimination, it is as old as human kind. Some people would say that discrimination is a type of abuse, falling into both the physiological and physical molds. The Homosapians committed this abuse against the Neanderthals, and I think we can all agree that it is one of the sources of most societal ills. Prejudice, bullying, racism are all types of discrimination. Machismo, Homophobia & stereotypes are also products of this abuse. Maybe there is a physiological explanation to all of this, maybe you were raised to discriminate against Jews or Asians, or maybe you had a bad experience with a black man and so you associate black people with that experience. Let's start of with Machismo. It has been around even before the bible, for it features strongly there. It says that women are "unclean" because they get their periods, and that if a mother bears a male child, it's better than if it had been born a girl. This holy book says that women are to blame for the fact that Adam & Eve were kicked out of paradise. Before, if a man could find a stick thinner than his thumb he could LEGALY BEAT HS WIFE & CHILDREN WITH IT! And even now, in places like India and Saudi Arabia, a woman can be RAPED and if she takes the man who raped her to court & doesn’t have 4 male witnesses SHE, THE VICTIM WILL AUTOMATICLY LOSE & be STONED TO DEATH!! And plus, in the Quran, the Islamic version of the Bible, it says that if a woman is raped by a man, she must legally take him...

Gay Marriage?

...When you think of America, the first thing that should come to your mind is a nation of peace and equality. But in reality it's not, is it? We live in a nation of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Homosexuals get the worst of all the unfair treatment. Gays have been fighting for rights since the 1960's, maybe even before then, and yet today in 2012, those pleas for rights are heard, but ignored & lashed at. We should allow same-sex marriage because banning it is unfair, love is all that matters in marriage, & gay families have certain family values that some straight marriages lack. Banning an issue doesn't make it go away. The fact of the matter is, it'll always be there: gay people will always exist & so will their need for equal rights. As stated in '14th amendment' in the Constitution, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges...nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. ” In short, everyone deserves the same, equal rights: that includes gay people. In that case, banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Making this issue illegal is also a form of discrimination. Homophobes ridicule & abuse gay citizens, gays are just being themselves! We are all created equal, so why can't we all just try to get along? What's the reason people get married for? Love is. Who's to judge someone based & whom they love? No one has the rights to do so. Gays have feelings too, & them getting married isn't hurting anyone...

The Movie Philadelphia

...Barbie Miller Philadelphia Movie Review I think the movie was okay, not something I would have watched on my own. This movie shows how one is discriminated against because of his disease. Discrimination comes in all kinds of forms, from racism, gender, age and more. I am not sure how this really fits into this period, other than it was in the early 80’s when people started to learn about aids. Homosexuals started coming out of the closet as they say. You had to be afraid to be gay because you would be persecuted for your sexual orientation. Everyone thought Aids was just related to the gay community, but it was also from doing drugs with someone that had the disease. Sharing needles from during heroin with someone that was a carrier. Therefore, here is my take on the movie. Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) is one of Philadelphia's most promising lawyers. He is the hot rookie and hired by a top law firm headed by Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards). Andy is also gay and dying from AIDS. When the physical signs of the disease begin to manifest themselves, the firm gets cold on Andy and he is out of a job. They tell him it is because he has an attitude problem and his work is mediocre, but Andy knows it is more personal than that. After no other law firm will take his case for unfair dismissal, his last resort is old adversary Joe Miller (Denzel Washington). Joe, a homophobe with an innate fear of AIDS, is reluctant to take the case also because of his personal reasons, but after...

Gay Marriage

...A debate is being placed across the country: Should the government allow gay marriage in ALL 50 states? They answer to this well known debate is yes. Marriage fifty years or so ago no longer really seems to apply in this day in age. If America says no to gay marriage, than the land of the free and the right to supposibly have the pursuit of happiness, actually discriminates against people. How can legislators say the are saving the traditional familes if more than 50 persent of of hetrosexual marriages end in divorec? Living in America, the land of the free people who are homosexuality should not get the end of the stick. They are human just like hetrosexual person and deserve the same rights. I belive my opioin is moraly respectable, no matter what my catholic upbringing tries to pursued me in beliving. To have our goveremt say who we can and can’t marry just isn’t right. The government cant control love and commitment. The purpose of our government is to make decision that will benfit the entire country, not just individual people. We need to take our moral out of the picture and make choice that give all a chance to equale. Allowing gay marriage is fair to not only hetrosexuallys, but all to supoorting people in their lives. If the United states allow gay marrige in all states and gives the same rights to heterosexuality couples that homosexual couple have this does not mean were asking all homophobic people to accept gays. Everyone has their own beliefs, and not...

Article Rebuttal Paper

...Anti-Gay Controversy Article Rebuttal Paper: James Lee University of Phoenix BCOM/275 Anti-Gay Controversy Article Rebuttal It is hard to argue that issues regarding gay rights have been under a great deal of scrutiny in recent years. Though much news has been geared towards same-sex marriage in relation to the recent presidential elections, gay rights have also been sparking upheaval in relation to the workplace. Specifically, in a Huffington Post article “Chick-fil-A Anti-Gay Controversy: Gay Employees Speak Out,” Lila Shapiro writes on the effects of Dan Cathy’s, founder and owner of Chic-Fil-A, coming out against gay marriage. Though clear, fair, and evidence based arguments can be given for both opponents and proponents on gay marriage, Shapiro only whimsically urges readers to wake up to Cathy’s mistakes with an argument from pity while also begging the question; claiming that his choices were a biased hatred towards the gay community. The article fails to show both sides of the argument and only makes an attempt to pull sympathy from readers by one sided views of those opposing Cathy’s business and religious choices to accept the writer’s views. For example, from one of the many stories she lists to support her claims, she writes: One gay employee who works at Chick-fil-A headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., and asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing his job, says he is getting it from both sides. On the one hand, there is the customer who came in and said he...

Sociology

...The U.S have never been the best place to live, especially for black people. From the slavery and torture, to extreme racism we have suffered for many years and are continuing to suffer do to the U.S poor sence of values. The United States is becoming a place where “anything goes”, and most Americans are okay with that.  No matter which side of the “culture war” that you are on, you have to admit that our culture is being fundamentally transformed.  In fact, new numbers from Gallup confirm that there has been a colossal shift in America’s moral values just since 2001.  Over the past 13 years, we have become a dramatically different country.  Many of the things that used to be considered “evil” are now considered to be “good”, and many of the things that used to be considered “good” are now considered to be “evil”.  In other words, our culture is literally being turned upside down, and the “values” that our national leaders speak of today are far different from the “values” that our grandparents grew up with. Nowadays the values the U.S are much worst than long ago. There is still racism in some parts of the states, which leads to whites killing blacks for little or no reason. Instead they do something about that, they choose to legalize abortion and gay marriage, which is genocide in a sence. Instead of reproducing kids so they can become our future doctors or lawyers, they choose to abort the child without giving the child a chance to live. Abortion is another form...

Appendix G

...Appendix G Shirley Short ETH/125 10/21/2012 June Rizzo Throughout history, women have had fewer rights than men. At one time, women were not allowed to vote, women were not allowed to serve in the military, and women were expected to stay at home, clean, cook, and take care of the children, while the men were working and providing financial support for the family. Women also at one time were expected to dress and act a certain way, and were only to speak if spoken to; they had to obey their husbands. Women’s international center (2012) states that “wifehood and motherhood were regarded as women’s most significant professions” (paragraph 1). Today, women have gained complete equal rights. The women’s movements were successful and are to be thanked for that victory. Unlike years ago, women now are able to do whatever a man can do, if capable, they are allowed to vote, they can be the bread winners in the family, they can join the military, all around, they have the same rights as a man. Women still do face challenges, such as sexual assault, but there are now laws to protect them and make sure that justice is served. In society and in the media, masculinity and femininity are projected as an image. Women are expected to be thin, wear makeup...

Homophobia in the Bahamas

...The word ‘homophobia’, can be defined as irrational fear against homosexuality. More importantly it can be perceived as a discriminatory state of mind that heterosexuals have towards homosexuals, which makes them homophobic. Recent laws have been passed for same sex marriages in the United States of America. Due to its relationship with the Bahamas, these laws are likely to affect the Bahamas tremendously. According to an interview with the Tribune newspaper, feminist theory, gender and sexuality expert, Dr. Peter Bailey, claims that “globalization will inevitably cause cultural attitudes toward same-sex rights to change.” (Cited in Rolle, 2015) Homosexuality is becoming more prevalent in the Bahamas and as Dr. Bailey stated changes indeed about to take place, therefore it is imperative that persons be enlightened on motives that bring about anti-homosexual behavior amongst Bahamians. The Bahamas is a small country whose leading religion is Christianity. According to The Constitution of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas “the People of this Family of Islands recognize that the preservation of their Freedom will be guaranteed by a national commitment to Self-discipline, Industry, Loyalty, Unity and an abiding respect for Christian values and the Rule of Law”. (Bahamas Government) This shows that due to religious principles, and other aspects of culture the reasons that cause Bahamians to develop homophobic outlooks are, their beliefs that homosexuals bring a higher rate of diseases...

Should Freedom of Speech Be Limited

...Many people think that freedom of speech is a right all humans should have because it allows people to express themselves. That is true, but nobody has ever thought that freedom of speech can actually harm people too. Apart from all the good things freedom of speech brings, people often miss the numerous bad things that freedom of speech brings. Some of these things included using freedom of speech to discriminate, expressing slanderous facts to the public and it can also promote unwanted riots that will cause havoc to a city. I think that freedom of speech should be limited to protect people from harm. Firstly, freedom of speech can be used as a way to discriminate people without consequences. If freedom of speech isn’t limited and anyone can say or express whatever they want, lots of people can pass out booklets discriminating gay people or a certain religion, because they dislike them. Everybody can tell that those people are abusing the freedom of speech, plus they wont receive consequences for doing so if freedom of speech isn’t limited at all. Which is why freedom of speech should be limited in order to protect those people from discrimination. Secondly, freedom of speech allows people to express slanderous opinions or facts just so they can gain trust from the city residents and gain power. Once too many people believe that person, it will be too late to stop and tell the truth because there will be too many people that that believes the lie and wouldn't believe the...

The Boy Who Painted Christ Black

...One Friday Morning Discrimination is all around us; everyone is discriminated one point in his or her life. Langston Hughes, an African-American writer, wrote the short story “One Friday Morning.” The story is about a girl who was discriminated in her school because she was black. Life brings many disappointments, which make a person stronger. People who discriminate usually have never experienced discrimination. Nancy Lee, the main character of the story, fits well with her classmates even though she is colored. She is considered smart and fits well with the life of the school. Nancy Lee participated in a lot of school activities and clubs. Graduation was approaching so Nancy Lee and her classmates began to wonder who had won the Artist Club scholarship. One day in April Miss O’Shay, the Vice-principal, asked Nancy Lee to stop by her office so she could speak with her. Nancy Lee began to worry that maybe she did something wrong. She walked into Miss O’Shay’s office nervously. Miss O’Shay told Nancy Lee that her picture had won the Artist Club scholarship. Miss O’Shay, however, told her not to tell any of her classmates yet. Nancy Lee ran all the way home, anxious to tell her parents. Nancy Lee had to prepare for the special event; she got her dress ready and wrote her acceptance speech. She was all prepared that Friday morning, her mother was going to come and her mother was ready to go too. Nancy Lee got to school that morning and went to Miss O’Shay's office. Miss O’Shay...

Equality and Diversity

...Unit 7 equality and diversity Case study Aurel is homosexual, but has hidden his true feelings all his life. He is 45 years old, has a wife, two children and a high-profile job as a surgeon. Lately he has become more and more unsettled and has met a man in a gay bar he feels he could be happy with him. He is afraid to tell his wife because he does not want to break the family up. He is worried that he will lose his children’s love and his parents respect, and that his colleagues and patients will be unhappy working with and being treated by a gay man? 1. What do you think he should do? I think that aurel should tell his wife first as she is his partner and they have children together, she might be upset or angry that she has been lied to and that she is going to lose her husband who she loves and has spent her life with but if she does love aurel she should be accepting of his decision and not necessarily help but just be there for him, after all they are married and in a close personal relationship. He should then move on to tell his parents and see how they react, hopefully they are accepting and still see him as their son and help him through this stage in his life as it will be stressful, his parents could have many emotions about their son being gay but as he is their son and they love him they will have to learn to live with it. When aurel tell his children he should be prepared for anything as they are young children they may not be as accepting as they would...
