In evaluation hourly rounding, the specific data analysis method utilized was the mean. The mean number of falls pre-implementation to the mean number of falls post implementation was compared to determine if there was an improvement after the hourly rounding project was initiated. The mean was also utilized to compare HCAHPS survey scores to determine if an improvement occurred in the two specific domains, responsiveness of staff and communication with nurses. HCAHPS survey scores were compared pre-implementation to post-implementation scores to determine whether or not the mean post-implementation had increased.

Limitations to purposeful hourly rounding were nursing staff feeling uncomfortable rounding every hour during the night, because they did not want to wake up their patients and nursing staff feeling they were behind in other tasks as a result of hourly rounding. When nursing staff held each other accountable, hourly rounding was done successfully. The rate of falls did decrease by a total of five post-implementation. During the pre-implementation period of four months, there were a total of 16 falls, which included nine unobserved and six observed, and one suspected fall. During the implementation period, there were eight unobserved falls and three observed falls. Although there were five less falls during the implementation period, an area of concern is that the number of unobserved falls remains high. The importance of emphasizing to nursing staff to continue to offer assistance to the bathroom during hourly rounding to assist in decreasing the number of unobserved falls cannot be stressed
