House I Live in

The main purpose of the movie “The House I Live In” is to emphasize reasons why the war on drugs will never end despite the attention that is drawn towards it for political agenda. Ultimately, the war on drugs in the United States is less concerned with the elimination of drugs in order to protect people from its detrimental effects and is used as a tool in order to get politicians elected. Unfortunately, the consequences of these actions hurt people more than it helps. These political actions manly impact poor drug addicts, who are likely to become incarcerated for drug use. An additional reason for the ongoing war on drugs without any apparent improvement is the fact that law enforcement agencies receive greater amounts of compensation for these drug related arrests. These efforts are also linked to business in the country as well; the more criminals that are caught for drug related crimes, the more business that companies that produce police weapons and tools will make. Since these companies hold power, they will send lobbyists to local politicians to ensure that law enforcement policies remain static. The trailer calls the drug war a “holocaust in slow motion”. This is a valid analysis because when thousands of the nation’s poor are sent to jail for drug use, families are ripped apart and become unable to support themselves. It is therefore essential to reconsider the war on drugs in the United States and consider the benefits that legalizing drugs would allow. Many states have already legalized marijuana for personal and medical use, and the economic situations of these locales have improved as a consequence. Therefore, it is important to restructure the argument for legalization in a manner that points out the negative effects of continued law enforcement policies on the matter and to reinforce the point that drugs are an industry that can lead to profit

Compare and Contrast Home vs Renting

...phrase of being at ones home is home sweet home, would it be apartment sweet apartment? Owning a house or renting an apartment is significant to many individuals who like the concept of coming to their living quarters and knowing this is theirs. There are many advantages and disadvantages to owning either a house or renting an apartment, but where they live relies on the personal needs. There is much to consider between the two because the area that one wishes to live depends on how flexible their life styles are. The main decision is left to you and the main idea is what is the best choice for you. Preferably I believe in the concept of owning ones house rather than renting from someone else because the property is mine and owning a home adds more stability in my life. Both the house and apartment are stable living quarters, but its how concrete one wants to stay with their property which lies the question. When owning one's house, he or she is in full control of the home and does not have to worry about anymore payments to the house. That stability allows he or she to control the inputs on what to put into the house but its all an option; a way of controlling all factors of ones house. "As a home owner, you have complete control over when you move versus moving when you may not want to, You will always have peace of mind living in your own home" (Should I…, 2007). Basically controlling all perspectives that an owner could have with their home. On...

Would You Prefer to Live in a Traditional House or in a Modern Apartment Building?

...accepted by the contemporary people that we live in a world that everything is changing and developing incredibly rapidly. In such an environment we grew up, unquestionably, the place we live, relax and spend our time with friends and relatives it is extremely important. Although nowadays people choose to live an apartment due to financial reasons, I prefer to live and raise my children in a house. First of all, I grew up in a house, so I think it is very difficult for me to move in an apartment and adapt in a new and completely different way of life. The life in an apartment has many limitations. You cannot have your privacy and you must respect the rest residents. Consequently, you cannot make a lot of noise, (especially during the midnight), invite your friends or relatives anytime you want, watch television or listen to music very loud even make barbeque in your balcony. I really, cannot imagine my life with out these activities. In addition, usually houses are larger and more comfortable than apartments. Moreover, if you live in a house you can spend your time in a garden or backyard, instead in a central park or another public place. This is a very important advantage especially when you have children in the house because they can play safely with out any danger from careless drivers and criminals. Furthermore, people that live in house tend to have better relationships with their neighbours instead of those that live in apartment due to the traditional way of life...

House and Apartment: Similarities and Differences

...built an apartment which is has the same function as a house, that is a place to live in. Unlike a house, an apartment usually located at the center of city which is give an extra benefit for business utility. “Your apartment is your home, and you should be able to enjoy it to the fullest” (Ron Leshnower, 2010). Nonetheless, some people think that living in house would give the maximum comfortibility. There are 2 similarities between a house and an apartment. First of all, both of them would make you spend the same living cost. When you decide to live with luxurious life style, wherever you live, you would stay to live with that kind of habit. Second of all, whether it is a house or an apartment, it has a big role as a place to live in. In the other hand, there are 3 differences between living in a house and apartment. Firstly, living in a house would spend more money rather than an apartment. If you think that someday you would buy a house, first thing that you need to purchase is a land. A land is primary requirement to build a house. Thus, it should be really expensive especially if it is close by the city. And next, you need to buy the raw materials and hire someone to build a house. However, if you decide to buy an apartment, all you need to do is be ready for the money. “It is cheaper then living in a traditional house and paying different kinds of fees I am not familiar with.” (IELTS Essay Task 2: Apartment Or House, paragraph 2, http://www.goodatesl.com/ielts/writing...

...of the biggest responsibilities is providing a safe place for the child to live. This means the parents need to make a decision on whether to rent or buy a larger home for the growing family. If I were personally presented with this decision right now, I would make the choice to rent rather than buy. As I considered this decision I took into consideration many the economic principles that I have learned in this course and how they affect my ability to buy a house. The first principle I thought about was how much I could afford to pay for a house. This was the major factor affecting my decision. My income right now is very limited so at this time I do not have the means to save toward a down payment. Without a guarantee that my financial situation will increase, it is not wise for me to make a commitment like this at this time. I need to finish my education and find a more secure, better paying job first. I also considered other economic related factors when I made this decision. I thought about the type of neighborhood that I would want to live in, the additional financial responsibilities of owning a home, the total monthly and yearly cost of homeownership, the risks that come with owning rather than renting, my lifestyle and spending habits and my current savings account (O'Brien, 2005). A growing family should decide on what type of neighborhood they want to live in. I would want my family grow up in a good neighborhood with good schools. In most...

Looking For A Little Kid

...I think its messed up how they have to live because people all around the world that are famous just throw money away like its nothing and spend it on stupid stuff when they could be giving it to people that really need it. Seeing that little kid out there looking for stuff is sad to see because I think it’s not right for a little kid to be living in those type of conditions. The houses are pretty much made out of recycled stuff that we never used and threw it out. These houses can also be stacked on top of each other which is really dangerous cause anytime that little piece of medal or whatever its made out of can break and all that stuff would fall people on the top would fall and hit the get injured or may even die. It is also for the people on the bottom all that garbage would land on top of them and kill them instantly if not die they would get really injured. I also see a lot of African American’s who live like this there is about 65% African American’s who live in these dangerous conditions....

...Deciding where to buy a house I looked at areas that I’ve lived in before, and areas that was closed to my future job. House selection one is located in the Northwest Suburbs and is in Elgin, IL. 60120. This location is about a 25 minute drive to my future job which would be in Schaumburg, IL. House selection two is where I went to high school at Palatine, IL. 60067. This location is about ten minutes from Schaumburg. Both location has good schools with Palatine with a little edge on the schooling system. The distances from house selection one and two to family is about the same, about 30 minute drive to Chicago. 2. What is the logic behind choosing the size and specifications of each house? Choosing the size and specification I chosen I looked at the average size of families, and the thought about the size of my life. I would like to have one kid, and I would also like to have a office in the house. So choosing a house with 3 bedrooms was ideal for me. One room would be the master’s bedroom, one for my child, and one would be an office. Also since the average size of families are 2.5 kids having a three bedroom is key to the resale value of the house. Also I decided to get a Single Family House. I always wanted to have a house with a huge backyard, and didn’t want to live on top of another owner like in a condo or in a townhouse. I wanted my space. 3. Ten Years in Just 89 Square Feet

...Ten Years in Just 89 Square Feet Jay Shafer and the Tiny House Movement by Antony Taylor For ten years, Jay woke up every morning to his bedroom ceiling, just 3' away from his face. After climbing down from his loft bed into his 6' x 6 ½' living room, he would enter his 4' x 2' bathroom. To most people, Jay would appear to be a prisoner, and the conditions might appear inhumane, yet Jay is not a prisoner, nor has he been forced into these living conditions. In fact, Jay not only chose to live in such a small space, he designed it himself! Jay's house for ten years, the “Epu” is the size of a walk-in closet in most of today's homes, yet it contains a living room, desk, fully functioning kitchen, separate bathroom, and loft bed space. Jay Shafer is the owner of the Tiny Tumbleweed House Company, founder of the Small House Society, an ecological activist, a new-era architect, and a lifestyle revolutionary. His minimalist lifestyle design has been featured in The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal, and Time Magazine. He and his tiny house has been featured on “CNN”, “Oprah”, “This Old House” and countless local news stations. Around the country, people are purchasing his designs, attending his workshops, and following his revolutionary example of how to live life with less space and less possessions, resulting in less of a drain on resources and the environment. Some of these places changed me in a way, but mostly it's the important events that matter to me. My first significant place is the Oakland Convention Center downtown. This place is significant to me because it's where my mom and dad met for the first time and if it wasn't for them meeting there, I wouldn't be here today. What’s funny about this is that my dad actually got a job at the Marriott City Center which is in the same building as the Oakland Convention Center. Sometimes there would be employee parties and...

Research Paper

...Professor Herrera ENG 101 May 10, 2014 Home Sweet Home Everyday individuals are often forced to mature too quickly because of their environmental surroundings. The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, is an example of how a society has the ability to directly impact young lives, in turn creating necessary "rites of passage." Through her environment, Esperanza, one of the many girls living on Mango Street, learns how to survive in a world full the unknown. Some may believe that the setting for this novel has no bearing on young Esperanza; however, Esperanza's character and transition into adulthood are dramatically defined by her own surroundings and neighborhood. Sandra Cisernos's The House on Mango Street portrays the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. She has a vision of what her dream home should look like. She dreams of a house with a large beautiful backyard, real staircase, more than one bathroom, and just a house that she is overall proud to live in. Her house on Mango Street is the complete opposite to her dreams. It was a small red house, with just one washroom, no private backyard or green lawns. Esperanza is clear that her house on Mango Street is not what she wants. More importantly through the process of finding herself she is able to put together a meaning of what it is like to feel "at home." Esperanza believes that to feel "at home" a person is comfortable, relaxed and at ease in their home. By the end of the book she does not...

Cruck House

...Today was a rather ordinary day, but sometimes I wish I was not a peasant. My day consists of many chores that need to be done around the manor. As a peasant, life for us is difficult, we live in a small one room feces infested cruck house. A cruck house is made of straw, which is used to provide structure and we use manure to keep the house together. I sort of envy those who get to live in a bigger house with a better house structure, it smells of feces because we use the manure a lot but also our animals must stay in the house with us, so they are protected from the weather, people who would steal them, and animals. I am glad that it is starting to warm up, because the winters can be rather harsh and the cold easily seeps through the walls. A woman gave birth to a young boy during the winter, it is rather hard to care for a baby in the winter time. Many...

Supply and Demand Paper

...Supply and Demand Paper A good that I have experienced purchasing, which has factors of supply and demand is a new house. One factor that can determine the supply and demand ratio, which can lead to an increase or decrease of price is the area that the house is purchased in. I live near a large college, Virginia Tech, which employs and educates thousands of individuals. The factor of this situation is the closer to the college an individual chooses to live, the more expensive products will cost to live there. If Virginia Tech's athletic program made a turn for the worse, then that could downsize the amount of people in this area, which would decrease the need of housing in the area. Second is the economy, with the ups and downs of the economy, individuals are afraid of making drastic change involving money because of the scare of losing his or her job. Basically with this situation, someone that has a good job and good credit can determine certain outcomes by buying a house at a better price because others are scared to. A motivated seller will not hesitate to sale a house to an individual that offers a fair price for a house that has set on the market for a time period. This type of situation generally drops the demand factor, which decreases the value of the product. There are a couple substitutes that can establish a comfortable market value for a house around the area I live. If an individual wants to live in this area but cannot afford the housing...

Also I will discuss the two substitutes that were out there it I did not buy a new house. I will also discuss two complements that were or the house I brought. I will also explain the necessity of chosen good impact on buying a house. Well the change in the market when I brought my new house when we move from Texas. It was different when we live in Texas there were not enough house on the market so I was able to get a good price for my house. When I move to north central Illinois was the house bubble just busted and we enter a rescission that this country has not seen since the 1930’s. I look and we had a lot of good choice to choose from. I was able to buy a house that was a foreclosure for a very cheap price and it meet what we were looking for close to the church and work. We have own it since 2006 and have done many changes but with a lot of house on the market I was able to get it a very cheap price and it help out a lot. Communication Theory

...other. In my house hold we have a 2 year old, disabled military vet who is 22, 54 year old with cancer, another military vet who is 25 and I. I live in West Virginia and yet I have a different culture than the people who live in my house. I am originally from upstate New York. I have never worked in the health care field but I do know what it is like to have to have good communication with people who are not only a different gender but come from different cultures as well. When it comes to gender there is always a different way of communicating. Men and women communicated very differently. When you add in culture differences into the gender aspect you can have some communication bumps that might come up along the way. I think our age and life experiences also play a part in the way we communicate with others. For example, in my house the 22 disabled vet has a more aggressive way of communicating. I am not sure if it is his age, gender or life experiences. Maybe a combination of all of them put together. My 2 year old son has a speech delay of 25% and is hard to understand a lot of the time. The 54 year old with cancer has a more introverted way of communicating with people. He often comes off as very calm, soft spoken and gentle. I myself have a more brutal honest approach when I communicate with people. I have noticed that people in the area that live in do not have this kind of communication. As odd as it might sound the communication flows well in our house. Being from a...
