Every once in a while, someone comes along and endures their pain with such grace and beauty that they forever change the way we look at the world. Wendy Jean Wallace is one of those rare people. Wendy is no stranger to heartache. Shortly after marrying her husband, Randy, they were informed they would never be able to have children, due to Wendy having ovarian cysts and endometriosis. She was put on hormones to help regulate her bleeding and help with the pain. As a result of the medication, she suffered from hundreds of pulmonary embolisms: blood clots that worked their way from her legs and settled in her lungs. Any one of these tiny clots could have killed her. A couple of years later, Randy suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage. He spent several days in ICU. Miraculously he survived but he would never fully recover. Before this incident, he was a brilliant school teacher with a long career still ahead. In Shine, Hicks’ concoction of multiple cinematic techniques effectively portray the idea of the change and the transition from the suppression of the individual to the strength of the individual. Hicks’ use of specific techniques helps the audience learn more about Peters Authoritarian mindset and further develops the oppression felt by David’s character whilst portraying the idea of change. This enables the audience to understand the more complex underlying themes in the film and makes the audience more aware to the specific role of each character in the film and how they are all intertwined with each other at a deeper level.
