...niece as she sat next to me. The lantern I had placed beside us cast flickering light throughout the abandoned tannery‘s darkened interior. Eerie, dust-laden cobwebs clung to every wooden beam, workbench and table, causing her to shudder. I glanced at her innocent face untouched by grief, and wished yet again that I had been born in her day rather than mine. ―For emotional support.‖ ―Then I‘m not in any danger, Aunt Margryte?‖ she asked unsurely. ―Of course not, Geruscha,‖ I said while smoothing down a ruffle in my threadbare black mourning dress. ―Do you know who owns this place?‖ ―I used to. Well, I guess I still do.‖ Memories of better days from decades past superimposed themselves over broken chairs and dilapidated benches. I bit my lip to keep deep inner pain at bay. ―So why don‘t you sell it? Seems structurally intact; surely there‘s a tanner who would buy it from you?‖ ―You ask a lot of questions, Geruscha,‖ I protested. ―You did ask me to come tonight,‖ she pouted. ―So I did. I keep this place because it suits my purposes on the odd occasion, such as tonight,‖ I answered after a moment. Geruscha‘s next question died on her lips when the front door swept open to admit a badly scarred man dressed in the garb of a common mercenary. I laid a hand on her forearm to reassure her. Aged wooden floorboards groaned under unaccustomed weight as the man approached us. Cold eyes met mine, and then studied my niece as though she was a horse for sale. ―Who‘s this?‖ he grunted. ―This is...

Abstract This paper analyses the implications of differing global demographic trends for India’s competitiveness in outsourcing and offshoring. It also briefly notes the implications of differing demographic trends among the Indian states. The paper argues that demographic complementarities with high-income countries provide India with one-time opportunity to sustain its growth rate and occupy all segments of global outsourcing and offshoring activities. India has used the labor cost advantage to gain reasonable market share in these activities. It however faces serious internal and external challenges in sustaining its international competitiveness, particularly with respect to labor cost....

How Lucky You Are

...Terminsprøve - Delprøve 2 ”And know always how lucky you are”. That was what the woman, Alexsa, told Max, the main character in the short story “How Lucky You Are” written by Debi Alper in 2010, after they had realized that Ishraqi, an Iran girl, who Max has just meet, and felt in love with, was going back to Iran, where her life would be in danger, and she is in ignorance if her parents are alive, or where they are to be found. But what does Alexsa mean when she say, that Max will have to always know how lucky he is? And I wonder how it would fell when someone you love is reluctant leaving you forever and there are nothing you can do about it? The story presents a tense, but exciting relationship between two young teenagers; Max and Ishraqi. Common to both of them, is that they seem to be outgoing persons, smiling and obliges to new acquaintances. Ishraqi seems to be a mental strong character; “I do not even know where my parents are or if they are still alive”. Clearly she is moved by the ignorance about her parents, but she has managed to live on, and she is trying to build a new future, far away from Iran, in which her future looks dark and are not existing. She can still smile, enjoy and express love although the things she has been through has left vestige inside her. She too seems to be willing to open up, tell her personal story to somebody she just met, tells that she is an outgoing, trusting person. Max kind of has more, different types of personalities...

How Lucky You Are

...How Lucky You Are Whenever I hear the word lucky, the first thing that comes to my mind is winning the lottery. Winning in the lottery would mean a life filled with luxury. It would mean that I could live in a big fancy house with ocean view. I could drive my Ferrari to work, if I actually bothered to work. I never think of how lucky I already am, even though I never have won the lottery. I live in a country where I am safe. I wake up every day and know that I will get food and be able to wear some nice cloths. This is not the case for everyone. In some countries, you never know what to expect when you wake up. You could be shot because there is war, or you could starve because your family cannot afford food. Some of the people who live under these conditions try to immigrate to another country. Sometimes the immigrant is completely alone without any family, because the family is unable to run away from the country. If the immigrant then succeeds their immigration they do not know anything about their family anymore. For all they know they could be dead. This is what the story “How Lucky You Are” from 2010 by Depi Alper is about. The story takes place in the urban environment of South London in Corydon where the main character named Max lives. Max is a troubled teenager who lives with his mom. Max’ father left to find himself. Max hates him for this mainly because he could hear his mother cry weeks after the father left: “Yeah right, Dad. That's why I heard her crying every...

How Unethical Are You?

...are asked this question How ethical are you? They usually reply that they are ethical but you are probably not. We sometimesmake unethical decisions unconsciously. This article explains four related sources of unintentional unethical decision making. They are implicit forms of prejudice, bias that favors one's own group, conflict of interest and overclaiming credit. Implicit forms of prejudice is also known as unconscious stereotypes and attitudes towards people. In the mid 1990's professor Tony Greenwald (university of Washington) developed a tool called Implicit Association Test (IAT). This test exposes your decisions making based on race, gender, religion and so on. Bias that favors your group. We have probably all done this. Referred a friend, or relative to get a job. We tend to do favors for those that are similiar to us. Perhaps same race, religion, employer or attend the same school. This is called in group favoritism. While discriminating these who are different from us is consider un-ethical. We tend to judge African Americans, Arabs, poor, gays and lesbians. On the contrary, 75% of testakers (IAT) will choose the young, rich and white. Conflict of interest can lead to intentionally corrupt behavior. Experiments show how powerful such conflicts can unintentionally change decision making. Several examples are a physician accepting payments from clinical trials, lawyers fees based on their clients settlements. Overclaiming credit is when you give yourself too much credit...

...Essay - How Lucky You Are The short story, “How Lucky You Are”, is written by Debi Alper and published in 2010. The main theme in the story is to appreciate what you have and, as the title says, to know how lucky you are. The main character is Max. Max is a student in a special school for creative people, The Britt School, but he does not appreciate the opportunities he has in this school. He is a very creative boy with a “twisted imagination”. He used to be a happy boy until one day when his father left him and his mother. Now he is sixteen, he has no enthusiasm for school, and he smokes home-made cigarettes. He always fights with his mother and he is unaware of people around him. But all of this changes one day when he decides to skip school and go smoke in front of the UK Borders Agency. This is where he meets the Iranian girl, Ishraqi, who is a refugee. Ishraqi comes from Iran but fled to Britain when both her parents were arrested in an anti-government demonstration. She does not know if they are dead or alive, and her future depends on whether she gets asylum in Britain. Even though a lot of people try to flee from conflicts and corruption in their native country, Great Britain deports several refugees and asylum seekers every year. This is unfortunately also what happens to Ishraqi.
