Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd president of the United States of America. Moreover, he was the third president who lost the popular vote, but won through the electoral college. This makes us question, was Benjamin Harrison the man who deserved to win? How would his legacy change?
On August 20, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio Benjamin Harrison was born. Born into a family of strong political history, he was ensured a path in politics if he wished. William Henry Harrison, his grandfather, was a leader in the political field who would later become the 9th president of the U.S.A.. senate representing Indiana. Arguing for the rights of homesteaders, Native Americans against the expanding railroad industry and campaigning for generous pensions for Civil War veterans, Harrison was a highly principled man who stood for what he believed in. In 1882, he went as far as to break from the Republican Party to oppose the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which did eventually pass. The election of 1887 gave a the Indiana senate seat to a democratic, consequently booting Harrison from his government position. One year later, Harrison won the Republican nomination for president of the United States of America. Contrary to traveling the country to campaign, Harrison preformed “front porch campaign”. This was a method where delegates would travel to Harrison’s home in Indianapolis and listen to him give numerous …show more content…
The lingering effects of economic depression caused Harrison’s term to focus on reconstruction instead of perfection. Ergo, Harrison’s term saw a general 1% deflation rate to attempt to balance out the economy. Harrison signed the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 into law -- as funded and administered, the legislation had no teeth, but it established the goal of a check on corporations that later presidents like Theodore Roosevelt could exploit more fully. The panic of 1893 occurred during Harrison’s term, most notably from Harrison's decision to create higher tariffs and introduce silver coinage. As I stated prior, Benjamin Harrison was a strong man who stood by what he believed in. This is proved by his supporting of bills that promoted voting rights of African Americans in the South. Moreover, he also appointed Frederick Douglas as an ambassador to Haiti. Harrison’s term was mainly focused on improving domestic policy, but he did introduce an important idea to the country. While his bill did not make it through congress, Harrison was the first president to attempt to annex Hawaii. It is also important to note that Benjamin Harrison annexed 6 states to the USA, more than any other president in history. Harrison worked hard to fix what he could, but failed in the eyes of the citizens, and eventually did not win

...THE GREAT RECESSION Since publication of Robert L. Hetzel’s he Monetary Policy of the Federal Reserve (Cambridge University Press, 2008), the intellectual consensus that had characterized macroeconomics has disappeared. hat consensus emphasized eicient markets, rational expectations, and the eicacy of the price system in assuring macroeconomic stability. he 2008–2009 recession not only destroyed the professional consensus about the kinds of models required to understand cyclical luctuations but also revived the credit-cycle or asset-bubble explanations of recession that dominated thinking in the nineteenth century and irst half of the twentieth century. hese “market-disorder” views emphasize excessive risk taking in inancial markets and the need for government regulation. he present book argues for the alternative “monetary-disorder” view of recessions. A review of cyclical instability over the last two centuries places the 2008–2009 recession in the monetary-disorder tradition, which focuses on the monetary instability created by central banks rather than on a boom-bust cycle in inancial markets. Robert L. Hetzel is Senior Economist and Research Advisor in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, where he participates in debates over monetary policy and prepares the bank’s president for meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee.
