How Did Grand Theft Auto III Impact

How Grand Theft Auto III Made an Impact Grand Theft Auto III was very influential on the appearance of gaming. This game’s storyline and all its blood, strong language, and violence are entirely focused on adult consumers. The pause menu contained a page called the status page, which showed how many things you have completed throughout a significantly complex map. This game included another very interesting feature that involved radios stations in cars that continuously re-played set soundtracks. Fairly well known actors voiced the secondary characters (GamesRadar Staff). The consumers were also a part of Grand Theft Auto III’s impact on the appearance of gaming by constructing mods (GamesRadar Staff). Although stealing cars was already incorporated …show more content…
Using the voices of well-known actors is more common today than it was then and this particular game could have helped contribute to that. For example, Ice Cube’s voice is used when playing Call of Duty: Ghost’s multiplayer. Another great example would be the extremely famous actor Liam Neeson, who voices an important character in the popular role-playing game Fallout 3 (Danko). Grand Theft Auto III’s creators were treating the game as if it were a movie (GamesRadar Staff). They didn’t just pick any actors that were available nor did they try and enlist famous actors for the reputation (GamesRadar Staff). They found actors that would’ve played and perfectly fit the role if it were a movie because a video game with a campaign is essentially an interactive movie (GamesRadar …show more content…
However Grand Theft Auto III opened up the world even more than previous open-world games, which made it somewhat unique. Grand Theft Auto III’s sandbox type play really enforced one of Pistol’s lines from The Merry Wives of Windsor in which he says, “Why, then the world's mine oyster. Which I with sword will open.” Of course, in the previous Grand Theft Auto’s there was always stealing cars involved, but in the 3rd version of the game there is so much more. Grand Theft Auto III’s sandbox way of play set a prototype for other sandbox type games (GamesRadar Staff). The act of being able to sprint, jump, and climb seem simple concepts, but in reality they are a faster, more efficient, way to do things in a game (GamesRadar Staff). This game has help include sprinting in most of today’s on-foot type games. Without the ability to sprint, how could Call of Duty be a fast paced first-person shooter? How would you be able to get that unfair advantage over your opponent if you could not “Halo jump” or climb to high ground to ambush the enemy. It wouldn’t because you would be limited to walking speed on a map which was just a flat plane, which might be safer, but who cares about safety when you’re running around, hurdling barriers, shooting people, and blowing things up. From these examples one could see how this game helped other game developers in the development of their

Violence in Video Games

...least one video game, Grand Theft Auto may have been the driving force behind a triple homicide. Although extensive research has not been compiled to prove this theory is substantiated, there is supposition that for those individuals who spend countless hours playing video games will ultimately result in aggressive thoughts and behavior, anger, physical and sociological perspective. Violence in Video Games As technology evolves the interactive nature of violent video games has worsened the effect on players, especially children. Video games have potentially harmful impact on the player’s ability to separate fantasy from reality. The learned behavior from these games may impact the player’s health, social skills and possibly their outlook on life in general. Violent activities such as shooting, stabbing and burning are behaviors commonly portrayed by the villains in the game. Weapons used to perform these violent acts include a variety of firearms (hand guns, rifles, machine guns, and laser guns), knives, explosives (Molotov cocktails, bombs, hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenades), swords and even vehicles. Negative behavioral effects of video games are blamed on the violent activities and behaviors practiced. Children who play more violent video games are more likely to have increased aggressive thoughts, feeling and behaviors according to a scientific study (Anderson & Bushman 2001). The realism of the player repeating the violent acts impacts their learning violent...

Compstat

...immediate needs confronting the NYPD at that time: the compelling need to bring spiralling rates of crime and disorder to within manageable bounds and to refocus the NYPD on its primary mission of effectively ensuring public safety by reducing crime and violence. Since its introduction in early 1994, Compstat has proven to be highly effective in achieving the goals for which it was initially intended. Over time it has also evolved and grown from a basic and fairly rudimentary process involving the collection and analysis of crime data as well as a mechanism for ensuring accountability and information-sharing into a more complex, more nuanced, and eminently more effective management paradigm. As Compstat grew and changed over time, so too did the issues and problems challenging the NYPD. As crime and public disorder offences declined to within more manageable limits, the agency had the luxury of turning its attention to a range of other management problems and issues. While reducing crime and disorder and increasing public safety have never lost their prominence or their importance on the NYPD’s set of post-1994 priorities, the relative ease with which Compstat has permitted the agency to fulfil its primary mission has concomitantly resulted in the capacity to identify and address a host of other new, emerging, or longstanding management issues. The Compstat management model has become a fairly complex yet eminently adaptable paradigm that can be...

Police Corrupton

...Chebat Published by University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Political Science 1 The Chicago Police Department has a legacy of both heroism and corruption. On the one hand, the department’s officers risk their lives on a daily basis to enforce the law, protect the public and preserve the peace. On the other hand, Chicago has a checkered history of police scandals and an embarrassingly long list of police officers who have crossed the line to engage in brutality, corruption and criminal activity. An analysis of five decades of news reports reveals that since 1960, a total of 295 Chicago Police officers have been convicted of serious crimes, such as drug dealing, beatings of civilians, destroying evidence, protecting mobsters, theft and murder. Moreover, the listing of police convicted of crimes undoubtedly underestimates the problem of corruption in the Chicago Police Department (CPD). The list does not include undetected and unreported illegal activity, serious misconduct resulting in internal disciplinary action, and officers who retire rather than face charges. Our analysis of police corruption in Chicago yields four major findings. First, corruption has long persisted within the CPD and continues to be a serious problem. There have been 102 convictions of Chicago police since the beginning of 2000. Second, police officers often resist reporting crimes and misconduct committed by fellow officers. The “blue code of silence,” while difficult to prove, is an integral...

...U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation 2012 The Strategic Information and Operations Center at FBI Headquarters is the 24/7 command post that monitors FBI operations and law enforcement activities around the globe. An FBI agent examines a potentially contaminated letter during a white powder training exercise. 2012 The FBI Story I A Message from FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III For the FBI and its partners, 2012 was a year that reminded us once again of the seriousness of the security threats facing our nation. During the year, extremists plotted to attack—unsuccessfully, thanks to the work of our Joint Terrorism Task Forces—the U.S. Capitol, the New York Federal Reserve Bank, and other landmarks on U.S. soil. Tragically, on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, a hateful attack in Benghazi took the lives of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. In the cyber realm, a rising tide of hackers took electronic aim at global cyber infrastructure, causing untold damages. High-dollar white-collar crimes of all kinds also continued to siphon significant sums from the pocketbooks of consumers. And in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 young children and six adults lost their lives in one of the worst mass shootings in American history, ending a year of violence that saw similar tragedies around the country. Working with its colleagues around the globe, the FBI is committed to taking a leadership role in protecting the nation. As you can see from...

...to use the video games industry to demonstrate the utility of Global Production Network approaches to understanding the geographically uneven impacts of globalization processes. In particular, three key notions of value, power and embeddedness are used to reveal the most powerful actors in the production network, how they maintain and exercise their power, and how the organization of production is manipulated as a result. It is argued that while hardware production is organized by console manufacturers using truly global sourcing strategies, the production of software is far more complex. In fact, software production networks are bounded within three major economic regions: Western Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. This paper seeks to explain how and why this has occurred. Keywords: video games, global production networks, value, power, embeddedness JEL classifications: L14, L23, L82 Date submitted: 4 October 2004 Date accepted: 12 April 2005 1. Introduction The video games industry1 was born during the early 1960s and has rapidly, and almost continuously, grown in size and scope ever since. It is estimated that the industry was worth around $23.2 billion in 2003, and is predicted to reach $33.4 billion in 2008 (DFC Intelligence, 2004). Despite now being comparable in size to the global film industry, and having a pervasive impact upon popular culture, the video games industry has received relatively little...
