A fatal disaster happened at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in 1911 in NYC . The rapid fire spread through the factory on the 8th, 9th and 10th floors. It took away 146 lives of young European immigrant women workers. They were literally trapped at the building because there was no way to escape. There was only one fire escape, which broke during the rescue attempt. The layout of the factory was poorly designed, therefore many of the workers were not able to leave their work spaces. Also all the exit doors were locked by managers to prevent theft, and panicking workers failed to open them. There was not enough buckets of water available to douse the fire. Firefighters' were trying to stop the fire, however their attempt was not successful
