How Do Teachers Create Cross-Curricular Links?

With the benefits of cross-curricular instruction in mind, teachers can create links across the curriculum to provide students an interdisciplinary instruction. Savage (2012) and Reson and Gandy (2014) suggested ways teachers can create cross-curricular links. Savage (2012) observed and interviewed four teachers in his pedagogical study. The teachers worked within their own subject areas and did not collaborate with other teachers to establish any cross-curricular themes. These four teachers were selected in phase one of the study, after Savage conducted 15 observations A lesson observation grid was used for note taking, and Savage determined that these four teachers formed cross-curricular links for five minutes or longer. Later, phase two was implemented which consisted of interviews of these four teachers to determine if the cross-curricular approach was deliberately incorporated in the lesson and in the lesson planning process. …show more content…
In the second case study, the Information Communications Technologies (ICT) teacher wanted to provide opportunities for students to collaborate and discover links with other subjects. The teacher linked the ICT lesson to English by having the students sequence video clips to create a narrative of the film. Additionally, the teacher in case study three linked English to music, drama, and film. The cross-curricular links in this lesson were purposely planned. Finally, the fourth and final case study consisted of a drama teacher who incorporated cross-curricular links to English. This teacher used cross-curricular links to increase understanding and allow for engagement. In Hong Kong this has led to the development of the concept of an inclusive curriculum for special schools. This paper looks at the implications of writing an inclusive curriculum that has common curriculum content for all pupils that is based on the State curriculum. Over a four year period, nine special schools for pupils of different designated disability collectively pooled their resources to work for one common curriculum goal. In doing so they discovered that the biggest challenge was to the teacher’s hearts and minds. Over 130 teachers were involved in the project.
