How does caffeine consumption influence physical performance during exercise?
Introduction
Caffeine consumption has had a significant increase within society, with males and females consuming a daily mean over 170 mg for age groups 31-50 and 51-70 years (equalling over four cups of black tea, or one and a half espresso shots of coffee). Along with approximately one quarter of 51-70 year olds consuming the equivalent of six to seven cups of tea or two to three espresso shots of coffee each day (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2015).
Due to this significant caffeine consumption within our Australian society, science has developed an interest in the physical effects that caffeine has on our body in relation to our performance. Caffeine is considered …show more content…
The effects of caffeine to our central nervous system are positive and include central drive to maintain exercise, the sustained ability of muscles to contract and produce force, and the reduced perception of messages of pain and fatigue sent by muscles back to the brain (Burke 2013). Doherty and Smith (2005) revealed caffeine consumption resulted in a decrease of exertion perceived, by 5.6% during aerobic exercise, explaining 33% of improved performance. With the conclusion that caffeine improves performance by masking the perception of fatigue and recruiting additional motor units during exercise. This same pain reducing effect has also been documented in young men (Motl et al 2003) and women (Gliottoni and Motl 2008) completing submaximal cycling. Therefore the studies display no evidence of the effects of caffeine on heart rate as hypothesised but instead on the masking of pain and sustained muscle …show more content…
The analysis of the results including discrepancies in the data could also be analysed to establish the reasons behind them such as various subjects caffeine metabolism (Astorino and White 2012). This will help researchers further understand and interpret sets of data relating to the effects of caffeine on performance across individuals, and create recommended caffeine consumption amounts and frequency to act as an ergonomic
