Although Twain satirizes religious in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the main critique he is making is the naiveté of society as demonstrated by the townspeople believing the identity of the King and Duke. When the King and the Duke go to a town pretending to be the brothers of the dead, rich man Peter Wilks. They go to accept the money their “brother” had left for them, and when the Duke argues that it is not wise for them to stay, the King replies, “Hain't we got all the fool in town on our side? and ain't that a big enough majority in any town?” (Twain 134). Huck finds out that the King had sold Jim into slavery just to get money for the bar, and he returns to the raft to think this over. Huck thinks of how he could get out of the situation ,but can not think of anything,saying that even after everything they’ve done for the frauds, “ here it all come to nothing...because they could have the heart to serve Jim such a trick as that, and make him a slave again all his life” (Twain 160). Huck finally realizes that Jim does not deserve to be treated like that, despite his color. Jim is a person, just as he his, and deserves respect after all he had done for the two frauds. This symbolizes Huck’s maturity and growth, forming his own ideals based on what he believes is right, not what society tells him.
